Parliament Passes Mental Health Bill, 2016
The Parliament has passed the Mental Healthcare Bill, 2016 that decriminalises suicide attempt by mentally ill people and guarantees the right to better health care for people with mental illness. It was first passed in Rajya Sabha in August 2016 and later in Lok Sabha in March 2017. Now it will go to the President for his assent.
Government Launches Online Film Certification System
The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has launched the e-Cinepramaan, an online film certification system of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This initiative was launched on the lines of Union Government’s vision of ease-of-doing-business and digital India, to make the entire process transparent and efficient.
India, Nepal Renew Petroleum Supply Agreement
India and Nepal have signed an agreement to renew the supply of petroleum to Nepal for a period of five years i.e. till 2022. The renewed agreement, which was overseen by the Petroleum Ministers of both the countries, was signed even as both sides pledged to build a new pipeline for LPG.
Indian Navy De-Inducts TU-142M Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft
The Indian Navy has de-inducted TU-142M Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft after 29 years of dedicated service to the nation and 30,000 hours of accident-free flying. The aircraft was formally de-inducted at a ceremony held at INS Rajali Naval Air Station in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu. Now its role will be taken on by the newly inducted Boeing P-8I aircraft.
Key Facts: TU-142M was inducted into the Indian Navy at Dabolim Goa from the erstwhile USSR in 1988. Later it shifted base and made INS Rajali its permanent home in 1992. It was the fastest turboprop aircraft in the world. It had four powerful engines, contra-rotating, slender fuselage and swept wings. Since its induction, it was the mainstay of maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare operations of the Indian Navy. It had participated in all major naval exercises and operations such as Operation Cactus in Maldives, Operation Vijay (1998), Operation Parakram (2002) and anti-piracy operations from 2011 to till date. It also played an important role in transforming aspects of maritime reconnaissance and airborne anti-submarine warfare of Navy with its enhanced endurance, speed, long range weapons and sensors. TU-142M aircraft squadron was awarded Unit Citation by the Chief of Naval Staff in 2002 and was adjudged the Best Frontline Squadron on numerous occasions over the years.
Centre Imposes 10 Percent Import Duty On Wheat And Tur Dal With Immediate Effect To Protect Farmers’ Interests
The Government imposed ten percent import duty on wheat and tur dal with immediate effect to protect farmers’ interests amid projection of a record crop this year. Announcing the decision in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said, a notification issued in March 2012 has further been amended to impose basic customs duty of ten percent on wheat and tur dal. He said the estimated revenue implication of this decision is about 840 crore rupees at the current levels of imports. The move will help curb sharp fall in the wholesale prices of these commodities and ensure support price to farmers.
Orissa Becomes The First State To Bring Banking To Remote Rural Areas Through SHG
Orissa Govt has signed an agreement with State Bank of India (SBI) to bring banking to remote rural areas through Self Help Groups (SHGs). This is being implemented through the Orissa Livelihood Mission (OLM) of the state Govt. About three lakh Self Help Groups (SHGs) currently operating under the OLM project will sign up as Banking Correspondents for this purpose. SHGs will reach out to 1000 unbanked rural villages and Gram Panchayats of the State in the first phase, while the second phase will cover another 4000 Gram Panchayats. In the final phase, the entire State will be covered and this system will function as a supplementary Banking service.
Repco Bank Signs Agreement With National Housing Bank
Repco Bank has signed an agreement with National Housing Bank, for the implementation of the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme for the Middle Income Group – CLSS (MIG), announced by the Govt in Dec 2016. The scheme will be effective in all statutory towns and other towns notified as per the 2011 census. The tenure of the loan is 20 years or what is preferred by the buyer, whichever is lower. An interest subsidy of 4% will be given for Housing Loans upto a maximum of Rs 9 lakhs for MIG borrowers with an annual income of Rs 12 lacs or less. The subsidy will be at 3% for loans upto Rs 12 lakhs for those with an annual income of Rs 18 lakhs or less. The total interest subsidy will be paid to the beneficiaries at one go to reduce the burden of EMIs.
Karnataka Bank Installs Landmark 10,000th PoS Terminal
Mangalore-based Private Sector Bank Karnataka Bank installed the landmark 10,000th point-of-sale (PoS) terminal at Nandana Hotel, Bangalore, on March 27, 2017. The demonetisation of specified bank notes in November and the thrust on migration to digital channels for transactions seem to have helped Karnataka Bank reach its target for installing 10,000 PoS terminals three years in advance.
Government To Give Rs 100 Cr Each To Top 7 IITs
The Centre will offer Rs 100 Cr each to the Top 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the coming financial year to improve their quality further with a view to enhancing their global rankings. The IITs chosen for this are IIT, Madras, IIT, Mumbai, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT, Guwahati.
India Regains Border Gavaskar Trophy In Cricket
India has regained the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Cricket by beating Australia 2-1 in the four-Test series which concluded in Dharmashala on the 28th March 2017. In the final test, the hosts won by 8 wickets to round off an extremely satisfying home season of 13 Tests, in which they won 10, lost one and drew 2 matches. Ravindra Jadeja was named Man of the Series against Australia. With this win, India consolidated its Number One position in the ICC Rankings for Test playing Nations and also won the US $ 1 Million in prize money.
