Stand-off at Doklam ends as both sides withdraw troops
Over two month long Doklam stand-off has ended as both India and China have withdrawn their troops from the area. India has said, the process of disengagement of border personnel at face-off site in Doklam has been completed under verification. Responding to the queries on the understanding of disengagement at Doklam, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar yesterday said, India has always maintained that differences on such matters can be addressed only through diplomatic channels. He said it has been India’s principle position that agreements and understandings reached on boundary issues must scrupulously be respected.
Ministry of Textiles to organize Pan India camps from 7th-17th October
Ministry of Textiles has decided to organize Pan India camps in handlooms and handicrafts clusters, under the initiative-Hastkala Sahyog Shivir. According to an official release, the camps will be organized during 7th to 17th of October this year. This initiative is dedicated to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Garib Kalyan Varsh, the birth centenary year of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. In these camps, services including credit facilities through MUDRA scheme, assistance for technological upgradations under Hathkargha Samvardhan Sahayat and distribution of modern tool kits and equipment will be provided to the weavers and artisans.
Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh sentenced to 20 years in jail for two rape cases
Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been awarded 20 years in jail by the special CBI judge for two rape cases. Defence lawyer S K Garg Narwana said, CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases that date back to 2002. He said the sentences will run consecutively. The Court also fined the Dera chief 15 lakh rupees in each of the two cases, of which, 14 lakh rupees would go to the each two rape victims who were part of his sect. The defence counsel sought leniency from the court arguing that the Dera chief was active in social work and had health issues. He said they will appeal against the sentence in the High court. The sentence was passed in a special courtroom set up inside the Sunaria jail in Rohtak where the 50-year-old self-proclaimed godman, is lodged since last Friday after he was convicted. Media reports say he broke down and begged for forgiveness with folded hands when the sentence was passed.
Government launches India’s first Videsh Bhavan in Mumbai
The Government of India has brought all external affairs related departments like passport office and allied departments under a single roof in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Under this pilot project, four Regional Passport Offices, four offices of the Ministry of External Affairs, the offices of the Protector of Immigrants were brought under one roof in the swanky new building in BKC.
Swiss President to pay a three-day visit to India
Swiss president Doris Leuthard will pay a three-day visit to India beginning 29th August 2017. During the visit, both sides will hold extensive talks on the entire gamut of bilateral relationship including ways to ramp up trade and investment ties. The ministry of external affairs, MEA, said in New Delhi that Leuthard will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the talks, the Indian side may raise the issue of black money stashed by Indians in Swiss banks. Vice President of India will call on Swiss President. Minister of External Affairs and other Ministers will also make separate calls on Swiss President.
DIPP releases next edition of consolidated FDI policy
The Commerce and Industry Ministry has released the next edition of its consolidated FDI policy document, incorporating all the changes made over in the past year. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, DIPP said, the new circular will take effect from the 29th August 2017. The consolidated policy is a compilation of the various decisions taken by the government in the past one year. The DIPP, which deals with FDI related matters, compiles all policies related to foreign investment regime into a single document to make it simple and easy for investors to understand.
ICEX launches world’s first diamond futures contract
The Indian Commodity Exchange has launched the world’s first diamond futures contract, thus giving the diamond exporters a tool for hedging. The futures contract will enable diamond traders to offer better hedging pricing risks to their customers. SEBI has approved the ICEX to commence futures trading in diamonds.
Government bans import of gold and silver from South Korea
The Central Government has banned the import of gold and silver from South Korea with immediate effect. These restrictions have been placed because of a sudden surge in the imports of the metals from South Korea in the recent times. India has a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with South Korea. Now, the importers will have to take a license from the Director General of Foreign Trade for importing gold and silver from South Korea.
Researchers develop bio sensors to detect kidney disorders
Researchers in the IIT, Mumbai has developed a bio sensor which will help in detecting kidney disorders in eight minutes. The bio sensor can detect both the Ph content and urea content with a single drop of urine. This accurate test will determine whether both the kidneys in the patient are functioning normally or not. The discovery is hailed as a path breaking in the field of medicines.
Justice Dipak Misra was sworn in as 45th Chief Justice of India
Justice Dipak Misra has sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of India on the 28th August 2017. President Ram Nath Kovind administered him the oath of office at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Misra will succeed J S Khehar, who retired yesterday. Justice Misra will have a tenure of nearly 13 months.
National Sports Day – August 29th
The 29th August is observed as the National Sports Day. The day is celebrated on 29th August every year to mark the birthday of a legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand. To celebrate the day various programs are being conducted throughout the country. On this occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind will give the Sports Awards in the evening. A total of 29 players have been selected to receive the honour from the President. The President will confer Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
