Parali I island in the Lakshadweep vanishes
The uninhabited island of Parali I in the Lakshadweep has vanished due to inundation by the sea and it is now believed that it has gone underwater. This was announced on 7th Sept 2017. The island was part of the Bangaram group of islands and is believed to have been 0.032 sq km in the area when last surveyed in 1968. It is said to have been completely eroded between 1968 and 2003.
Government extends FAME India Scheme by six-months
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Affairs has extended the Faster Adoption of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) by another six months. The Phase I of the scheme was effective from March 2015 to March 2017 but was extended to Sept 2017. Now, it has been extended further to March 2018.
India’s first hyper loop to come up in Andhra Pradesh
The first hyper loop in India will come up in Andhra Pradesh, connecting Vijayawada and Amaravathi. The Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board has signed an MOU with the Hyperloop Transportation Technologies for the project. It will primarily use a Public Private Partnership Model for financing the project.
IISc, Bangalore ranked highest amongst Indian Universities
As per the Times University Ranking list for 2017 published recently, the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore remains the highest ranked Indian University. But its ranking slipped from the 201- 250 band to the 251-300 band. The Top Five Universities as per the list are Oxford University, Cambridge University, California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. No Indian University is listed amongst the Top 100 in the world.
First Water ATM inaugurated in Hyderabad
India’s first water ATM was inaugurated in Hyderabad on 7th Sept 2017. A total of 200 ATMs will be established, to target 150000 people in the city. Safe Water Network, an international NGO has partnered with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for this project. The project is supported by USAID and funded by Honeywell India.
World International Literacy Day – September 8th
The 8th of September is observed the world over as the World Literacy Day. This is to emphasise the importance of literacy to individuals, societies, and communities. The Day was established by the UNESCO in 1966 and this year, it is the 51st year of the same. The theme for this year is “Literacy in a digital world.”
Vivek Goenka elected as Chairman of Press Trust of India
Vivek Goenka, the Chairman of the Indian Express Group of Publications has been unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Press Trust of India. N.Ravi, Editor in Chief of the Hindu, was elected as the Vice Chairman. Goenka succeeds Riyad Mathew of the Malayala Manorama Group.
Rajendra Kumar assumes charge as CMD of NMDC Ltd
On 7th Sept 2017, Rajendra Kumar, a 1985 batch IAS Officer, took over as the Chairman and Managing Director of the National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (NMDC). Prior to this, he was the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Chattisgarh.
