Air India launches non-stop flight service from Delhi to Copenhagen
Air India has launched its direct flight to the Danish capital Copenhagen from New Delhi on 16th Sept 2017. This is the 11th destination for the national carrier in Europe, describing it as connecting ‘Maharaja with the Mermaid’. The flight landed at the Copenhagen airport after more than a seven-hour journey. In Air India’s trademark style, the inaugural flight was operated by an all-woman crew. The Air India service to Copenhagen will be operated with a Dreamliner aircraft thrice a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Home Minister launches Swatchhta Hi Seva Campaign
On 15th Sept 2017, the Home Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh launched the nationwide “Swatchhta Hi Seva Campaign” organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The campaign was launched at the ITBP campus in Tigri. The campaign seeks to attain India’s status as an “Open Defecation Free Nation” by the year 2019. It will also help in improving the nutrition and productivity of our children.
Rajasthan announces farm loan waiver
After a lot of protests and delays, the state Govt in Rajasthan has announced a waiver of farm loans to the extent of Rs 20000 Cr. All loans up to Rs 50000 will be waived off from the farmers. Rajasthan is the fifth state in the country to waive farm loans after Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
2017 Global Study on least and most stressful cities: Stuttgart, Germany at the top
On 13th Sept 2017, the report on the least and most stressful cities of the world was released. The study was done by a London based firm called Zipjet. Stuttgart in Germany came out on top as the least stressful city to live in the world, while India’s Bengaluru and Delhi came at a lowly 130th and 142nd respectively, out of the 150 cities studied, which means that Delhi is the 8th most stressful city in the world. The top 5 Most Stressful cities in the world as per the study are: 1) Baghdad 2) Kabul 3) Lagos 4) Dakar, Senegal and 5) Cairo. The least 5 Stressful cities are: 1) Stuttgart, Germany 2) Luxembourg 3) Hanover, Germany 4)Berne, Switzerland and 5) Munich, Germany. The rankings were done on the basis of a variety of factors including Density, Green Cover, Public Transport, Traffic, Perception of Safety etc.
China displays first unmanned helicopter
On 15th Sept 2017, China displayed its first unmanned helicopter AV500W for foreign buyers. The aircraft’s length is 7.2 meters and its maximum takeoff weight is 450 kg. Its maximum speed is 170 kmph.
Force Motors ties up with Rolls Royce to set up engine plant
Force Motors announced on 13th Sept 2017 that it has tied up with Rolls Royce Power Systems to set up an engine plant near Pune. The plant will produce multiple types of Power systems to be used in the Railways and Power Generation. The plant will produce for both Indian and international markets.
Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh passes away
Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh passed away in New Delhi on 16th Sept 2017. He was 98, born at Lyalpur now known as Faisalabad in undivided Punjab, Marshal Arjan Singh, joined the Air Force at the age of 19 in 1938. He was the only officer of the IAF to have been promoted to five-star rank. Widely respected and admired for his leadership qualities, Arjan Singh was an iconic figure of the Indian military history.
First ever UN Envoy for Oceans appointed by UN
The United Nations has appointed Peter Thomas as its first-ever envoy for Oceans. This was announced by the UN Secretary-General Antony Gutterres in New York on 13th Sept 2017. The appointment will seek to protect the world’s oceans from the effects of the climate change which has affected the lives of billions across the globe.
New Indian Ambassador to Slovak Republic Announced
Harsh Kumar Jain has been appointed as the next Indian Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. This was announced on 14th Sept 2017. An IAS officer of the 1983 batch, Jain is currently the Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan. Bratislava is the Capital of Slovakia. Mr. Andrej Kiska is the President of the Republic of Slovenia, while Mr. Robert Fico is the Prime Minister.
September 15th – International Day of Democracy
September 15th is observed as the International Day of Democracy. The day was celebrated in the UN Headquarters in New York. The celebrations were organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the UN. The theme of this year’s celebration is: “In defence of democracy: The 20th Anniversary of the IPU’s Universal declaration of democracy”.
September 15th – Engineers’ Day
In India, 15th of September is observed as the Engineers’ Day in memory of the great Indian Engineer, Sir M Visweswariah. He is India’s most revered civil engineer, dam builder, economist and statesman. He was conferred the Bharath Ratna in 1955. He was the Dewan of Mysore State in 1908. The theme of this year’s celebration is: “Role of Engineers in a developing India”
15-year-old Shapath Bhardwaj qualifies for ISSF World Cup Finals for shooting
Indian teenager Shapath Bhardwaj has been qualified for the prestigious ISSF World Cup Finals for shooting. Having become the country’s youngest athlete to figure in the government’s Target Olympic Podium scheme, the 15-year-old, who clinched an individual bronze medal in the Junior World Cup in Italy last month, will compete in men’s double trap alongside Ankur Mittal and Sangram Dahiya. The World Cup finals, the most prestigious annual tournament of the International Shooting Sport Federation, will be held next month.
