International Yoga festival begins in Kashmir
On 18th Sept 2017, the International Yoga festival began in Jammu and Kashmir. The same was inaugurated by the Governor of J &K M.N.Vohra. More than 300 delegates from India, USA, Vietnam and Taiwan apart from other countries are participating.
Commemorative Coins on M.S.Subbalakshmi Released
Commemorative coins of the Rs 100 and Rs 10 denominations were released on 20th Sept 2017 on the occasion of the birth centenary of the renowned Carnatic Musician M.S.Subbalakshmi. The coins were released by the Vice President M.Venkaiah Naidu at a function in this regard.
Cabinet Approves Merger of 17 Govt Presses into 5 Units
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for rationalization/merger and modernization of 17 Government of India Presses (GIPs)/Units into 5 Government of India Presses (GIPs) at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Minto Road and Mayapuri, New Delhi, Nashik, Maharashtra and Temple Street, Kolkata, West Bengal. These 5 Presses will be redeveloped and modernised by monetization of their surplus land. Modernisation of the Presses will enable them to undertake important confidential, urgent and multi-colour printing work of the Central Government Offices all over the country.
China issues postage stamp to commemorate world’s largest radio telescope
On 18th Sept 2017, the Govt of China issued a postage stamp to commemorate the world’s largest radio telescope situated in the Guizhou province. The Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope is 500 m in diameter. The telescope is designed to probe space for the faintest signs of life and is sensitive to any electromagnetic interference.
Mercedes Aroaz was sworn in as new Prime Minister of Peru
On 18th Sept 2017, the Vice President Mercedes Aroaz was sworn as the Prime Minister of Peru in the capital city of Lima. Earlier, the Cabinet had passed a no-confidence motion against the existing Prime Minister Fernando Zavala.
World’s Biggest Wealth Fund Hits $1 Trillion Value for the First Time
Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, the largest in the world, reached the value of 1 trillion for the first time. This amount equals nearly 189,000 (157,000 euros) for each of the 5.3 million people living in Norway. The fund mainly invests in stocks (accounting for 65.1 percent of the portfolio at the end of the second quarter), but also in bonds and real estate. With stakes in nearly 9,000 companies, it owns 1.3 percent of the world’s market capitalization, and 2.3 percent in Europe. Oslo is the Capital of Norway. The Currency of Norway is Norwegian krone.
Three Indians among World’s ‘100 Greatest Living Business Minds’
Three Indian entrepreneurial legends, Ratan Tata, Lakshmi Mittal and Vinod Khosla have been included in Forbes’s special list of the world’s ‘100 Greatest Living Business Minds.’ Some of the notable honorees alongside Blank are- Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump and more. Forbes magazine was founded 100 years ago on September 17 1917 by B.C. Forbes.
India Born Sreeram Krishnan appointed Senior Director of Twitter
On 19th Sept 2017, the micro-blogging site Twitter announced that it has appointed Sreeram Krishnan as the Senior Director Products. Earlier Krishnan had worked with Facebook and Snapchat. Twitter was founded in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. It was officially launched in July 2006.
Pune NGO “Swayam Shishkan Prayog” wins UN Equator Award 2017
On 18th Sept 2017, the Pune based NGO “Swayam Shishkan Prayog” won the UN Equator Prize for 2017. The NGO basically works for poor women. The prize was awarded to the NGO at a function in the UN General Assembly in New York on 18th. The NGO is the only Indian organization amongst the winners this year. SSP aims to empower 20000 women farmers from a poor background in Marathwada, Maharashtra.
Ana Carasco of Spain becomes the first female biker to win a World Championship race
Ana Carasco of Spain created history on 17th Sept 2017, when she became the first woman to win an Individual World Championship race in biking. She won the first place in the Supersport 300 World Championship round 10 in Portugal. She rode a Kawasaki Ninja 300 in the race.
Sri Lanka qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019
Sri Lanka has qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 after the West Indies lost the first ODI against England at Old Trafford yesterday. The 1996 world champions have become the eighth and last team to qualify directly, joining Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. West Indies will have to go through the qualifying round after they failed to qualify directly.
MS Dhoni nominated for Padma Bhushan award by BCCI
The Indian Cricket Board has nominated Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the country’s third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the game. Dhoni is already a recipient of the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Padma Shri award.
