National Award for Senior Citizens Given      
President Ram Nath Kovind gave away the National award for senior citizens to Indian boxing coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu and Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics and Management for 2017 to Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. Gurbax Singh Sandhu has been coaching both the men and women boxers. Sandhu was India’s longest-serving men’s national coach, for two decades. Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak is the founder of Sulabh International.
Cabinet approves SANKALP and STRIVE schemes to boost Skill India Mission 
On 11th October 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the SANKALP and STRIVE schemes to boost the Skill India Mission. Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP) and Skill Strengthening for Industrial Value Enhancement (STRIVE) are both aimed at result-oriented programmes aimed at vocational education and training. SANKALP is jointly funded by the Central Govt. and the World Bank. Out of the Rs 4455 cr budget, Rs 3300 cr will come in the form of a loan from World Bank. STRIVE is also funded by the Central Govt. and the World Bank. The budget outlay for this scheme is Rs 2200 cr, out of which half will be given as Loan from the World Bank.              
Cabinet Approvals on 12th October 2017 
The following are the approvals by the Union Cabinet on 12th October 2017:
1) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Financial Services Commission (FSC), Gibraltar for mutual co-operation and technical assistance.      
2) MoU between SEBI and Capital Markets Authority (CMA), Kuwait.
3) Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between India and Japan on the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP).
4) MoC between India and Japan on Establishing Flexible and Global LNG Market.   
5) MoU between India and Belarus for Cooperation in the field of Vocational Education and Training.
6) MoU between India and Morocco on cooperation in the field of water resource.

Global Hunger Index – India ranked 100 out of 119 nations    
As per the Global Hunger Index 2017, India is ranked a lowly 100 out of 119 nations. India is at the “high” end of the serious hunger category. More than 20% of the Indian children under the age of 5 have a lower weight in relation to their height and more than 30% of the Indian children too short in relation to their weight.
John Flint appointed new Chief Executive of HSBC         
HSBC has appointed John Flint as its next chief executive. Flint currently runs HSBC’s retail and wealth management business. He will start in his new role on February 21, 2018, He will take over from current chief executive Stuart Gulliver, who is retiring after seven years in the job. The appointment marks the first major decision taken by the bank’s new chairman, former AIA Group chief Mark Tucker, who joined HSBC on October 1 as its first-ever externally-appointed chairman. HSBC Headquarters is in London, United Kingdom. HSBC was established in 1865 to finance trade between Europe and Asia.
SBI launches SME Assist to help SME Sector clients 
On 12th October 2017, the State Bank of India announced that it had launched “SME Assist”, to provide short-term working capital demand loan to its Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises client category. The loans shall be provided on the basis of the client’s input claims under GST subject to submission of a certificate from their Chartered Accountant confirming the input credit claims. These loans will help the clients manage their working capital till the time they get their input credit.
Prakash Raj wins Karanth Award       
Actor Prakash Raj won the prestigious Karanth Award also called the Kota Shivaram Karanth Huttura Prashashti Award. The award is instituted in honour of the Jnanpith Awardee H.Shivaram Karanth. It is given by the Kottattu gram panchayat, the birthplace of Shivaram Karanth, in Udupi District of Karnataka.
Gurusaidutt wins Bulgarian Open Future Series Tournament    
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist RMV Gurusaidutt clinched the men’s singles title at the Bulgarian International Future Series tournament. Gurusaidutt has defeated Muhammed Ali Kurt (Turkey) in a 35- minute match. Gurusaidutt will also participate in Senior Nationals Championship in November 2017.
Yuvraj Singh becomes first Indian Ambassador for Laureus    

On 11th October, Yuvraj Singh was appointed as the first Indian Ambassador for Laureus. Laureus tries to improve the lives of young people through sport and several international sportspersons have been associated with Laureus. The vision of Laureus is to use the power of sport to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage. The programme consists of Laureus Sport for Good, the Laureus World Sports Academy, Ambassadors Programme and the World Sports Awards.
