India’s Manushi Chhillar wins Miss World 2017 title

India’s Manushi Chhillar has won the coveted Miss World 2017 crown at a grand event in China, bringing to an end the country’s dry spell of 17 years at the top pageant contest. The first and the second runners-up were Miss England Stephanie Hill and Miss Mexico, Andrea Meza.  The 20-year-old from Haryana, who is a medical student, edged out top five contestants from England, France, Kenya and Mexico. Chhillar was presented the crown by Stephanie Del Valle, the last year’s Miss World winner from Puerto Rico at the event in Sanya City Arena in China which was televised live globally.

Ethiopians win Delhi Half Marathon      

Ethiopians Birhanu Legese and Almaz Ayana won the Delhi Half Marathon, 2017. In the Men’s section, Legese clocked 59 minutes 46 seconds to claim the first spot, while his countryman Andahmlak Belihu finished second and Kenyan-American Leonard Korir came third. India’s Nitendra Rawat finished 10th. In the Women’s section, it was a clean sweep for Ethiopia, with world recorded holder Almaz Ayana finishing at the top of the podium. She clocked one hour, seven minutes and 11 seconds. Ababel Yeshaneh claimed the second spot, with Netsamet Gudeta coming third.
19th November- World Toilet Day    
In a move to make sanitation for all a global development priority, the United Nations General Assembly designated 19 November as World Toilet Day. World Toilet Day has previously been marked by international and civil society organizations all over the world. However, it was not formally recognized as an official UN day until 2013.          
2017 theme: Wastewater     
World Toilet Day 2017 continues the theme from World Water Day earlier this year, with the focus on wastewater.
Yuki Bhambri beats Ramkumar Ramanathan to win ATP Challenger title        

India’s tennis star Yuki Bhambri clinched his first title of the 2017 season on the ATP Challenger Tour following a come-from-behind win over compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan in the final of the KPIT-MSLTA Challenger in Pune. Yuki, country’s top singles player, overcame Ramanathan 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a little over two hours at Balewadi Sports Complex.
Qaumi Ekta Week observed all over the country     

The Qaumi Ekta Week is being observed across the country from 19th November to foster and reinforce the spirit of communal harmony and national Integration. As part of the week-long programmes, today’s (19th November 2017) day is being observed as National Integration Day. The last day of the Qaumi Ekta Week will be observed as Conservation Day and several meetings and functions will be organized to emphasize the growing need for awareness and action to conserve the environment.
Dr Manmohan Singh to get Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2017  
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will receive the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development this year for his leadership of the country between 2004 and 2014 and for enhancing India’s stature globally. The award, comprising a cash prize of Rs.25 lakh and a citation, was instituted by the Indira Gandhi Memorial trust in 1986 and previous recipients include the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, former President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel, and organisations such as the United Nation’s Human High Commissioner for Refugees and ISRO.

  • He was born on the 26th September 1932 in Punjab province of undivided India.
  • He was also a former Governor of RBI.
First Global Entrepreneurship Summit in South Asia to be held in Hyderabad           

The 8th edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit-2017 will be held in Hyderabad from 28th of this month. The summit is being co-hosted by India and the USA and for the first time, it is being held in South Asia. This year the theme of the Summit is Women First, Prosperity for All. The event will focus on supporting women entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth globally. It will focus on four areas- Energy and Infrastructure, Digital Economy and Financial Technology, Health and Life Sciences and Media and Entertainment. Women will represent 52.5 percent of entrepreneurs, investors and ecosystem supporters at the Summit.
48th International Film Festival of India begins in Goa on 20th November 2017        
The 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will begin on 20th November at Panaji in Goa. Around 200 films from over 82 countries will be screened during the nine-day extravaganza. The festival will be inaugurated by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani will be present at the inaugural function to be held at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium in Bambolim. Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan will be honoured with Personality of the year award at the festival. This year, Canada is the focus country and will be presenting a package of its 8 best recent films.
Qatar named world’s richest country as per IMF’s GDP Data       

As per the Per Capita GDP data released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Qatar has been named the world’s richest country, with the highest per capita GDP.      

The top five richest nations are      

1) Qatar         
2) Luxembourg          
3) Singapore  
4) Brunei        
5) Ireland.

New Executive Director takes charge at SEBI          

On 17th November 2017, Anand Rajeshwar Baiwar took charge as Executive Director of Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He is an Indian Revenue Service Officer of the 1990 batch. Prior to this assignment, he was working as Income Tax Commissioner in Kolkata. He is a graduate in Engineering as well as Law. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.
China opens world’s “coolest library”
The world’s coolest library has been opened in Binhai Cultural District in Tianjin Province in China. The five-storied building covers an area of 30,700 square meters. It can take in 1.2 million books. The world’s largest library is the Library of Congress is in Washington D.C, in the United States, both in shelf space and number of books. Amongst the other large libraries in the world are the British Library in the United Kingdom, Library and Archives of Canada and the New York Public Library in the USA.
