India urges UN to declare 2018 as ‘International Year of Millets’
India has asked the United Nations to declare 2018 as the ‘International Year of Millets’ and promote it as nutrition-rich smart food across the world. Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has sent a proposal to United Nations for declaring 2018 as “International Year of Millets” to raise awareness among consumers, policymakers, industry and research sector. Promotion of production and consumption of millets through conscious efforts at the global level is likely to contribute substantially in the fight against targeted hunger and mitigate the effect of climate change in the long run.
Bamboo not a ‘tree’ anymore: President clears ordinance amending Forest Act
President Ram Nath Kovind today cleared an ordinance amending the Indian Forest Act, 1927. The ordinance omits bamboo grown in non-forest areas from the definition of trees, thereby exempting it from requiring permits for felling or transportation. Before the ordinance was issued, the definition of tree in the Act included palm, bamboo, brushwood and cane. Bamboo grown in forest areas shall continue to be governed by the Forest Conservation Act, 1980, they pointed out.
FDI up 17% to $25.35 bn during April-Sept this fiscal
Foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country increased by 17 percent to USD 25.35 billion during April-September fiscal (2017-18). The department of industrial policy and promotion stated on its ‘Make in India’ twitter handle, FDI equity during the current FY 2017–18, up to September surged by 17 percent to USD 25.35 billion from USD 21.62 billion in the year-ago period.
Axis Bank launches blockchain-based international payment service
Private sector lender Axis Bank has launched an instant international payment services using Ripple’s enterprise blockchain technology solution for retail and corporate customers. Though an international offer, the bank is offering the facility only to its retail customers in the country to receive payments from the UAE-based Rak Bank and for its corporate customers to receive payments from Standard Chartered, Singapore.
Messi equals Ronaldo with fourth European Golden Shoe
A tally of 37 LaLiga goals in 2016-17 was enough to see Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi claim his fourth European Golden Shoe award. Lionel Messi drew level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of four European Golden Shoes after receiving the award at a ceremony on 25th November. The Barcelona superstar claimed the prize – handed to Europe’s top goalscorer – for his 37 LaLiga strikes in 2016-17. It is the fourth time Messi has taken the honours, after his successes in 2010, 2012 and 2013.
Ritu Phogat wins silver in U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship
India wrestler Ritu Phogat (48kg) clinched the silver medal in the U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship at Poland. Ritu Phogat lost to Turkish Wrestler Demirhan in the gold medal bout to settle for a silver at the U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship. The 23-year-old, who had won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship last year, lost against Turkish Wrestler Demirhan in the gold medal bout to settle for a silver.
President of India inaugurates International Gita Mahotsava-2017 in Haryana
On November 25, 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the International Gita Mahotsava-2017 in Kurukshetra, Haryana. Gita Mahotsava-2017 will conclude on December 3, 2017. Mauritius is the partner country and Uttar Pradesh is the partner state for this event. On November 25, 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind, also participated in Gita Yajna and Gita Poojan ceremonies at Brahma Sarovar and inaugurated an international seminar on Gita at the Kurukshetra University campus.
President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurates two-day conference on National Law Day in New Delhi
On 25th November 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the 2-day conference on National Law Day in New Delhi. This conference is organised by the Law Commission and the Niti Aayog to mark the National Law Day. The National Law Day is celebrated on November 26, the day on which the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly in 1949.
U.S., South Korea to hold joint air force drill “Vigilant Ace”
The air forces of South Korea and the United States will hold ‘Vigilant Ace’ a joint drill from 4th – 8th December 2017. ‘Vigilant Ace’ between air forces of the United States and South Korea is held at periodic intervals to simulate wartime defences. Nearly 12000 U.S. personnel, including U.S. Marine Corps and Navy troops, will participate in the upcoming edition of ‘Vigilant Ace’ along with South Korean troops. 230 aircrafts including F-22 stealth fighters will be flown at eight U.S. and South Korean military installations. The objective of this drill is to enhance interoperability between U.S. and South Korean forces and increase the combat effectiveness of air forces of both nations.
