Phase I of Bharat Net Project to be completed by December 2017         

On 26th October 2017, it was announced by the Secretary, Department of Telecommunications that the Phase I of the Bharat Net Project (National Optic Fibre Network) would be completed by December 2017. This will give internet access to nearly one lac gram panchayats across India. This announcement was made at the fourth edition of the “i-Bharat” conference held in New Delhi.
Suresh Raina Appointed Brand Ambassador of Ghaziabad        
Cricketer Suresh Raina has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. This was announced on 29th October 2017. Ghaziabad is the only city amongst the 16 municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh that has been declared open defecation free.
India sends the first consignment of wheat to Afganistan through Chabahar port    
Iran’s key strategic port of Chabahar became operational with the maiden shipment of wheat from India to Afghanistan. It was flagged off from Kandla port in Gujarat. This is a major push for India’s Afghan outreach bypassing Pakistan for the first time under the 2016 Indo-Afghan-Iran trilateral pact. Chabahar port is strategically located in Sistan-Balochistan province on energy-rich Iran’s southern coast in Gulf of Oman near its border with Pakistan and can be easily accessed from India’s western coast.
Saudi Arabia to allow women into sports stadiums from 2018    

Turki Al-Asheikh, Chairman of the General Sports Authority of Saudi Arabia has announced that Saudi women will now be able to attend sports events in stadiums starting from 2018. The move is aimed at empowering and engaging women in the society as an integral part of the development process. All these changes support Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” plan for economic and social reforms.

Transcorp launches prepaid cards in association with Yes Bank   
Foreign exchange and inward remittances provider Transcorp launched a prepaid card in association with Yes Bank. This card can be used across the country. This card has been launched in association with RUPAY, powered by the National Payment Corporation of India.
Anupam Kher wins Pramod Mahajan Smriti Award 

On 29th October 2017, actor and Chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI) received the Pramod Mahajan Smriti Award at a function in Pune. Actress Saira Banu also received the award. The award has been instituted by the Pune based organization Muktichhand in memory of former Union Minister Pramod Mahajan.
Heena Sindhu Wins Gold at Commonwealth Shooting Championships      
Ace Indian shooter Heena Sindhu bagged gold in women’s 10m Air Pistol event at Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Brisbane, Australia. Heena shot a score of 240.8 in the finals to beat Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch, who has to settle for silver after posting 238.2. Kristy Gillman of Australia picked up the bronze medal with a score of 213.7. India also picked up their second medal through Deepak Kumar as he won bronze in men’s 10m Air Rifle event.  Heena and Jitu Rai recently won the first gold medal of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup Final in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event.
Jasprit Bumrah claims top rank in ICC T20 Internationals

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah climbed to the number one spot in the latest ICC T20 rankings while his fifth-ranked team could go as high as second if it beats New Zealand in the three-match series beginning. Bumrah, who attained a career-best third position in the ODI rankings, has regained the T20 top spot after Pakistan spinner Imad Wasim slipped one place. India captain Virat Kohli went past AB de Villiers to claim the top ranking in ODIs for batsmen. New Zealand is the top-ranked side in the shortest format with 125 points.
Italy top medal tally in ISSF Championship   

In the ISSF Finals which were played on 29th October 2017 in New Delhi, Italy topped the medal tally by winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medals. The Chinese shooters were named the Champion of Champions. Hosts India finished the event at the 7th place, securing three medals – one gold, silver and bronze medal each.
Lewis Hamilton Wins 2017 Formula One Racing Championship Title   

Britain and Mercedes team driver Lewis Hamilton has won the 2017 Formula One Racing Championship Title, despite finishing ninth in the Mexican Grand Prix, following a collision with Sebastian Vettel. The Mexican Grand Prix was won by the Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. Mercedes won the Constructor’s Championship for the fourth successive time.
