16TH November – National Press Day

National Press Day is celebrated on November 16 to commemorate the establishment of the Press Council of India. Formed in 1966, the Press Council keeps a check on the quality of reportage provided by the Indian press. It also ensures that journalistic objectivity is not compromised due to “influence or threats of any extraneous factors”.
APMDC wins award from Abu Dhabi   

The Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) has bagged an international award from Abu Dhabi. The ADIPEC (Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference) Excellence in Energy Awards 2017 had adjudged the APMDC as the winner for the second position in the category of “social contribution in country value”.
  • Abu Dhabi is the Capital City of United Arab Emirates.
  • The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh is Nara Chandrababu Naidu while the Governor is E.S Lakshmi Narasimhan.
Saubhagya scheme web portal launched      

Shri R.K. Singh, Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – ‘Saubhagya’ Web Portal. ‘Saubhagya’ scheme was launched by Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on 25th September 2017 with an outlay of Rs. 16,320 Crores including Budgetary Support of Rs. 12,320 Crores.
S.Ravi appointed Chairman of Bombay Stock Exchange 

Eminent chartered accountant Sethurathnam Ravi has been appointed as the chairman of the leading Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Ravi, who was a public interest director at the BSE, replaced Dhirendra Swarup. The appointment has been approved by Market regulator SEBI.
  • BSE Ltd is the first ever stock exchange in Asia and was established in 1875.
  • It is the first in the country to be granted permanent recognition under the Securities Contract Regulation Act, 1956.
Bharat 22 Exchange Traded Fund Launched           

The government launched the ‘Bharat 22’ exchange traded fund (ETF) managed by ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, targeting an initial amount of about Rs. 8,000 crore. The ETF is part of the government’s overall disinvestment programme and mirrors the S&P BSE Bharat 22 Index, which comprises select companies from the CPSE (central public sector enterprises) universe, stakes held under the Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India (SUUTI), and state-run banks.
Canada hosts 2017 UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference         
Canada hosted the 2017 UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial Conference in Vancouver, Canada. This conference is the largest gathering of Defence ministers dedicated to UN Peacekeeping.

The goals of this conference are-
  • to measure the progress made since the 2016 UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial;
  • to encourage new pledges from the Member States, particularly in areas where the UN faces gaps, such as rapid deployment, helicopters, and francophone units.
Dantewada hosts India’s first tribal entrepreneurship Summit    

India’s first Tribal Entrepreneurship summit was held at Dantewada in Chattisgarh on 14th November 2017. The objective of Tribal Entrepreneurship Summit was to inspire and inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship in tribal youth and thereby move towards tribal-centric sustainable and inclusive development.
Google celebrates India’s first woman lawyer          

On the November 2017, Google commemorated the 151st birth anniversary of Cornelia Sorabji, India’s first woman lawyer, by putting up a doodle in her honour. Cornelia Sorabji was the first Indian national to study from a British University and was India’s first woman law graduate in 1892.
Aditi Ashok becomes first Indian Golf Player to qualify for LPGA Tour Championships      

Aditi Ashok became the first Indian Golf Player to qualify for the prestigious LPGA Tour Championships. The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golfers Association) is very difficult to qualify for. The 19-year-old girl from Bengaluru has had five major championships to her credit in 2017 and hence qualified for the LPGA Tour.
