UN, Facebook launch event “We the Women”

UN Women in collaboration with Facebook inaugurated a two-day event in Mumbai titled ‘We The Women‘ to empower and recognise the magnificent contribution of women in our society. The event witnessed speakers from different walks of life including Textile and I&B Minister, Smriti Irani, Sakshi Malik, Mithali Raj, Ekta Kapoor, Karan Johar and others.

Indian Diving Team wins six medals in Indonesian Open Aquatic Meet

Indian Diving Team won 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals in Indonesia Open Aquatic Championship 2017. The five-day championship concluded recently in Indonesia’s Jakarta. More than 1,500 athletes from eight countries participated in the 5-day event. At the championships, the diving category featured athletes from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

India to host ASEAN- India Connectivity Meet         
 

According to the External Affairs Ministry, New Delhi will host the two-day long Asian-India Connectivity Summit (AICS) on the theme “Powering Digital and Physical Linkages for Asia in the 21st Century“. The event comes ahead of the visit of the leaders of the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the commemorative summit of 25 years of the India-ASEAN dialogue partnership.           
The ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

10th December – Human Rights Day  

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. The day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, Human Rights Day kicks off a year-long campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone document. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 500 languages. The Campaign is named as #standup4humanrights.

India beat Germany to win bronze in Hockey World League        

India has won the Bronze medal in the Hockey World League Final tournament. In the third-place play-off match at Bhubaneswar, they beat Germany 2-1. SV Sunil and Harmanpreet Singh scored for India, while Mark Appel scored for Germany. In the pool stage, India had lost to Germany.

India hosts ICOMOS at 19th Triennial General Assembly  

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) is organizing ICOMOS General Assembly and Scientific Symposium 2017 in New Delhi from 11th to 15th December 2017. The theme of the conference is Heritage and Democracy. The aim of the conference is to enhance international cooperation in the field of Heritage conservation. Over 1000 delegates from 68 nations are attending the event.

Maharashtra offers cash incentives to local bodies to go plastic free  

Maharashtra State Government has decided to give cash incentive to gram panchayats and local bodies for making their respective areas plastic free. Under the cash incentive scheme, three villages from one revenue division each will be selected, with the first prize of Rs 5 Lacs. Soon, municipal councils and municipal corporations will also be awarded cash incentives.

Asian Development Bank approves $346 million to improve Karnataka roads   
        

On 8th December 2017, Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it was granting a loan of $346 million to the Karnataka Government for up-gradation of highway projects in Karnataka. Funds procured through this loan will be used to improve 419 km of state highways in Karnataka by improving them to two way and four-way highways in the state. A road safety project will also be conducted to identify critical accident spots and address them.
