Famous Bengali actor Partha Mukhopadhyay dead
Famed Bengali film actor Partha Mukhopadhyay has passed away. He was 70. Mukhopadhyay portrayed a number of memorable roles in the 1960s after getting a break as a child artiste in the film Maa directed by Chitto Basu in 1958. The state government had conferred Mukhopadhyay with a special award for his contribution to Bengali films. Balika Bodhu (1967), Dhonyi Meye (1971), Agnishwar (1975), Amar Prithivi (1985), Baag Bandi Khela (1975) are some of his popular movies.
Sohan Lal Commodity Management ties up with HDFC Bank and Indus Ind Bank
Agri service solutions provider Sohan Lal Commodity Management (SLCM) having operations across India and Myanmar has tied up with HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank to provide collateral management services. This tie-up will not only help improve the farmers’ access to post-harvest credits at affordable interest rates, it will also provide easy access to scientific storage facilities leading to a fair price discovery of their products in the market.
Samsung Pay partners with Axis Bank
Smartphone manufacturer Samsung launched its ‘Bill Payments’ on its flagship payments service, Samsung Pay in partnership with Axis Bank. With the introduction of ‘Bill Payments’, consumers will be able to pay their utility bills seamlessly through Samsung Pay, set reminders and search favourite biller based on their current location.
Indian boxers claim five medals in Galym Boxing Tournament
Indian boxers have claimed three gold, a silver, and a bronze medal at the Galym Zharylgapov Boxing Tournament in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. In the event, the country’s Gold Medal winners were K Shyam Kumar in 49kg, Naman Tanwar in 91kg and Satish Kumar in the 91 kg category claimed gold medals. The 19-year-old Naman Tanwar has also adjudged the best boxer of the tournament.
Narendra Modi to be first Indian Prime Minister to attend World Economic Forum in 20 years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will become the first PM in 20 years to attend the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual jamboree of the global elite. The meeting will be held in Davos town of Switzerland. The five-day Davos Annual Meeting of Geneva-based WEF will begin in January 2018. Top Indian CEOs will also be present at the meeting including Mukesh Ambani, Chanda Kochhar and Uday Kotak. Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister at the Davos summit since 1997 when the then Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda had attended. The Founder and Executive Chairman of WEF is Klaus Schwab and its Headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland. WEF was originally called the European Management Forum.
India finishes runner-up in SAAF under 15 Women’s Football Championship
India finished as runners-up in the SAFF Under-15 Women’s Championships. India lost to Bangladesh 0-1 in the final at Dhaka yesterday. In a closely contested game, Shamsun Nahar’s strike in the 41st minute helped Bangladesh to bag the title. India defeated Bhutan and Nepal in the first two games at the group stage. India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan participated in this South Asian Football Federation tournament.
Legendary South African Musician Robbie Malinga passes away
On 25th December 2017, the legendary South African musician Robbie Malinga passed away, aged 49. He had a hugely successful career spanning 20 years and had given several hits to his credit.
Finance Ministry to issue recapitalization bonds to PSU Banks
The first tranche of the recapitalization bonds to the PSU Banks by the Finance Ministry is likely to happen in January 2018. All the PSU banks will be allotted the bonds. This is part of the Government’s efforts to infuse an additional Rs 2.11 lac cr to the PSU Banks in the form of capital over a period of two years. Out of the Rs 2.11 lac cr, an amount of Rs 1.35 lac cr will be in the form of recapitalization bonds.
Sand Artist Sudharshan Patnaik creates world’s biggest Santa Claus face in Puri beach
On 24th December 2017, the internationally acclaimed sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik created the world’s largest sand face of Santa Claus in Puri beach. Along with that, he carried a message “World Peace”. The sand Santa face is 25 feet tall and 50 feet wide. It is being entered in the Limca Book of World Records. Patnaik also created a sculpture of Jesus Christ in the sand, using up 600 tons of sand in the process. He was assisted by 40 students from his academy. They took 35 hours to complete the project. The display of this will be on for public view till the 1st January 2018.
