Veteran Astronaut John Young passes away          

Legendary astronaut John Young, who walked on the Moon and later commanded the first space shuttle flight, has died at 87. Young was the only agency astronaut to go into space as part of the Gemini, Apollo and space shuttle programs and the first to fly into space six times. He was the ninth man to walk on the Moon.


Switzerland wins Hopman Cup Tennis Title 

Switzerland won their third Hopman Cup as Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber in the deciding mixed doubles to secure a 2-1 victory in the final at the Perth Arena. It was Federer’s second Hopman Cup triumph after victory in 2001 alongside the then world number one Martina Hingis.


Khelo India logo launched         

The vibrant Khelo India logo, reflecting the freshness, agility and vitality of New India was launched at a ceremony by the Union Minister of State (I/C) Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. The logo also conveys an impression of fitness and competitiveness. The three-stroke Khelo India logo, designed by Ogilvy India, has in-built modularity, allowing plenty of adaptability and flexibility into endless pictorial forms.


Elina Svitolina wins Brisbane International WTA Title     

Elina Svitolina secured her first WTA title in Australia with a straight-sets victory in the Brisbane International final. Svitolina beat Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Nick Kyrgios moved a step closer to claiming his first ATP title on home soil with a semifinal win over defending champion Grigor Dimitrov. He will face American Ryan Harrison in finals. Elina Mykhaylivna Svitolina is a Ukrainian professional tennis player.


Atal Pension Yojana base crosses 80 lakh mark       

The subscriber base of the Atal Pension Yojana has crossed the 80 lakh mark according to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority of India (PFRDAI), which runs the scheme. Uttar Pradesh has got the highest number of subscribers with 11.81 lakhs, followed by Bihar with 8.87 lakhs and Tami Nadu with 6.60 lakhs. Under the scheme, any person in the age group of 18 to 40 can join the scheme and pension will be given from the age of 60.


India’s first National Park for Disabled people opened in Hyderabad

On 5th January 2018, the Telangana Govt announced the opening of India’s first National Park for the disabled persons. The park has a speech therapist, vocational training instructors and physiotherapist amongst others for the users.



T.S. Tirumurthy appointed Economic Relations Secretary

On 5th Jan 2018, T.S. Tirumurthy was appointed as the Economic Relations Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He replaces Vijay Gokhale, who has been appointed as Foreign Secretary. He is an IFS Officer of the 1985 batch and is currently the Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia. He has earlier served as the Under Secretary to Bhutan amongst other positions.
