President of India becomes first visiting Head of State to address Parliament of Swaziland

Our President became the first visiting Head of State to address the Parliament of the country of Swaziland. Speaking on the occasion, the President said that we are living in a digital and hyper-connected world that places immense challenges before parliamentarians. India commits to cooperation in Health and Agriculture, to build new Parliament building. The President observed that climate change is one of the most critical challenges for our world. He noted that Swaziland has itself struggled with the El Nino phenomenon, leading to drought for two years. To support the Swaziland National Disaster Management Agency, India has offered US$ 1 million as well as foodgrains.

PM addresses 20,000 Swachhagrahis to mark the anniversary of Champaran Satyagraha

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 10th April, addressed 20,000 Swachhagrahis in Motihari, East Champaran district of Bihar. The event marked the culmination of a weeklong “Satyagraha se Swachhagraha” campaign run in Bihar from 3rd April onwards. At this event, associated with the clarion call “Chalo Champaran”, the Prime Minister also awarded ten Swachhagrahis who have performed outstandingly in their villages.
Speaking on the occasion, Sushri Uma Bharti, Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation, said that Mahatma Gandhi launched the Champaran Satyagraha over a century ago, on 10th April 1917, to give the country freedom from foreign rule. She added that this day, today, marks the “Satyagraha se Swachhagraha” campaign, which is aimed at achieving freedom from filth.

5 states to roll out intra-state e-way Bill from April 15

The e-way Bill system for intra-state movement of goods will be implemented from April 15 in five states. According to the GST Council, the five states are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh. With the roll-out of e-way Bill system in these states, it is expected that trade and industry will be further facilitated insofar as the transport of goods is concerned, an official release said. This would eventually pave the way for a nationwide single e-way Bill system.
Already, e-way Bill system for intra-state movement of goods is operational in Karnataka from April 1, 2018. These 5 states together account for 61 percent of the inter-state e-way bill generation, GSTN said. The electronic way or e-way bill has become mandatory for interstate movement of goods valued over Rs 50,000 from one state to another beginning April 1.

FSSAI introduces Project Dhoop, encourages children to absorb vitamin D through sunlight

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched a nationwide campaign on 9th April at National Bal Bhawan in Delhi to spread awareness about availing Vitamin D through natural sunlight and consuming fortified food among school-going children. The project was implemented in collaboration with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), North MCD and several private schools through a Joint Noon Assembly. Twenty-five schools from the National Capital Region were among the participants.
Vitamin D deficiency occurs due to overuse of sunscreen, wearing clothes that cover most of the skin, working all day in an air-conditioned atmosphere, and other factors. Project Dhoop urges schools to shift their morning assembly to noontime, mainly between 11 am and 1 pm to ensure maximum absorption of Vitamin D in students through natural sunlight.

India Signs MOU With World EXPO 2020 Dubai

India and World Expo 2020 signed participants contract for India’s pavilion in the prestigious World Expo 2020 held once in 5 years. The contract was signed by Shri Manoj K. Dwivedi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India on Indian side and Mr. Najeeb Mohammed Al Ali, Executive Director, Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau on behalf of Expo 2020 at the Expo site in the presence of Shri Navdeep Suri, Ambassador of India to UAE, Shri Vipul, Consul General of India, Dubai and Dr. Tarek Shayya, Board Director-Chief International Participants Officer, Dubai Expo.
The contract provides for the setting up of India pavilion at Expo 2020 on an extra large plot (about one acre) in the ‘Opportunity’ segment. Focus will be given to India’s advances in Space, Pharma, IT, Renewable Energy, Telecom sectors. Commerce & Industry Minister, Shri Suresh Prabhu has expressed his happiness on the signing of the contract.

New Website & Mobile APP of National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Launched

The new Website and Mobile App of the ‘National Commission for Safai Karamcharis’ was launched by Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment in the presence of the Chairman, Members and other officers of the Department and the Commission. The Minister congratulated the Commission for its new website and expressed hope that the new website and Mobile App will help the Commission in addressing the grievances/complaints of petitioners in an efficient manner.
The erstwhile website of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis was not user-friendly. On the advice of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, the Commission undertook the task of preparing a new website for itself.

The first meeting of ‘NITI Forum for North East’ held in Agartala

The NITI Forum for North East on 10th April outlined five development missions for promoting sectors like horticulture, tourism and food processing in the region, NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar said in Agartala. Other missions will cover bamboo-based handicrafts and medium scale industries with the focus on ‘Make in North-East‘, he said. Kumar said it was PM Narendra Modi’s vision to establish a regional NITI Aayog forum for the northeastern states.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and ministers from other North Eastern states. The NITI Forum for North East was constituted in February 2018 to ensure the sustainable economic growth of the region. The secretariat for the Forum has been established in the DoNER Ministry.

AIIMS professor Balram Bhargava to be new ICMR chief

Balram Bhargava has been appointed the new Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research and Secretary of the Department of Health Research, according to a notification by the appointments committee of the cabinet. Bhargava, currently a senior consultant cardiologist at the All India Institute of Medical Science, will carry out this role until 2021, according to the order. He will succeed former ICMR DG Soumya Swaminathan, appointed the deputy director general for the World Health Organisation in October 2017.

Rishad Premji named Nasscom chairman for 2018-19

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has named Rishad Premji, Chief Strategy Officer at Wipro, as its Chairman for 2018-19. Nasscom also announced the appointment of Keshav Murugesh as the Vice Chairman of Nasscom for 2018-19. Welcoming Premji as the Nasscom chairman for the year, Debjani Ghosh, President, Nasscom, said: “Rishad is an experienced leader whose accomplishments speak for themselves. With his unique exposure and new age energy, he is uniquely qualified to help lead the industry in a time of change and opportunity.”

India at CWG 2018, Day 6: Medal winners

Heena Sidhu picked up India’s third gold medal in shooting while Sachin Chaudhary won country’s first medal in Para-sports at the Commonwealth Games, claiming a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight final. Boxers Amit Panghal, Naman Tanwar, Mohammed Hussamuddin, Manoj Kumar and Satish Kumar assured India at least a medal each as they reached the semi-finals of their respective weights categories on the 6th day of 21st Commonwealth Games on 10th April.
