World Creativity and Innovation day: 21st April

On April 21, 2018, the first official World Creativity and Innovation Day (#WCID) will be celebrated, said the UN. Observed six days after Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday and one day before International Mother Earth Day, #WCID is well positioned to encourage creative multidisciplinary thinking to help us achieve the sustainable future we want. On #WCID, the world is invited to embrace the idea that innovation is essential for harnessing the economic potential of nations. Innovation, creativity and mass entrepreneurship can provide new momentum for economic growth and job creation. It can expand opportunities for everyone, including women and youth. It can provide solutions to some of the most pressing problems such as poverty eradication and the elimination of hunger.

Vice President inaugurates 2-day event of 12th Civil Services Day

The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that translating “legislative intent” into “programmatic content” and demonstrating to the common citizens what “Surajya” actually looks like in day to day administration, the civil services have an enormous opportunity today. He was delivering the inaugural address at the 2-day event of the 12th Civil Services Day, in Delhi. The Vice President said that a clean, competent, people-friendly, proactive administrative leadership is the need of the hour. He further said that ‘Swarajya’ has to be meaningful for each Indian and, for this ‘Surajya’ is inevitable. Every year, on the 21st of April, theCivil Service Day” is observed by all Civil Services to re-dedicate and re-commit themselves to the cause of the people. It provides a unique opportunity for introspection as also chalking out future strategies to deal with the challenges being posed by the changing times.

PFRDA makes the bank a/c, mobile number mandatory for NPS subscribers

Pension fund regulator PFRDA has made bank account details and mobile number mandatory for subscribers of the national pension scheme (NPS), the finance ministry said. Further, in compliance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) guidelines, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has also made Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and Central Registry of Securitization Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest (CERSAI) mandatory for new and existing subscribers. PFRDA takes various initiatives from time to time in order to simplify and improve the operational issues in National Pension System (NPS), like new functionality development under NPS architecture, simplification of account opening, withdrawal and grievance management.

India is world’s 6th largest economy, says IMF

According to the database of the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook (WEO) for April 2018, India is the world’s 6th largest economy. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the worth of the country’s economy, was pegged at $2.6 trillion for 2017. India moves into up to 6th spot, taking the place previously held by France. The five economies ahead of India in terms of GDP are the United States of America, China, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Coal India gets the third chairman in eight months

Musical chairs continues in Coal India eight months after Sutirtha Bhattacharya, an Andhra cadre IAS officer, retired as full-time chairman of the company that meets 80% of demand for coal. The government late last night replaced acting chairman Gopal Singh, who is also the chairman of subsidiary CCL, with Suresh Kumar, additional secretary in the coal ministry.

‘Study in India’ programme of HRD Ministry launched

Students across the world will now be able to pursue the education in prominent Indian educational institutions. In another groundbreaking initiative of HRD Ministry, Union External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj and Minister of State for HRD, Dr. Satya Pal Singh jointly launched the Study in India programme of HRD Ministry by launching the ‘Study in India’ portal (www.studyinindia.gov.in) at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi recently. The integration of e-SANAD portal and NAD – National Academic Depository (of HRD Ministry), was also launched by Sushma Swaraj on the occasion.

Malaria Summit held in London

Bill Gates who attended the summit, has warned that malaria was back on the rise again and would continue to claim more lives worldwide unless governments reinvigorated their push to eradicate the disease. Malaria death rates have been in steady decline since 2000 but rose in 2016 as progress towards eliminating the mosquito-borne preventable disease stalled. India was conspicuous by its absence from the Malaria Summit in London alongside the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) despite having the third largest malaria cases in the world after Congo and Nigeria, those campaigning against the disease said on Thursday. There was no India representative to participate in the summit because there is no India commitment, they said. One in seven Indians is at risk of contracting malaria.

Super Cup final: Bengaluru FC beat East Bengal 4-1 to lift the title

Skipper Sunil Chhetri led from the front with double strikes as Bengaluru FC came back from a goal down to notch up a dominating 4-1 win over ten-man East Bengal in the final to claim the inaugural Hero Super Cup trophy on 20th April in Bhubaneshwar. Two goals from Chhetri and one each from Rahul Bheke and Nicolas Fedor (Miku) ensured that the early lead taken by East Bengal through Kromah did not stop their march to victory at the Kalinga Stadium.

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 unveils official mascot

Son of Dreams was unveiled as official Mascot of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019. Born in China on August 8, 2015, Son of Dreams’ magical horns give him the power to see in the future, envisioning plays and moves before they actually happen, reported Xinhua news agency. Li Yingchuan, China’s Vice Minister of Sports, said: “I believe the mascot will spread the idea of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and the spirit of basketball to the rest of the world with its cute and vivid image and will play an important role in enhancing the influence of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.” The first ever 32-team FIBA Basketball World Cup, which will take place in eight Chinese cities from August 31 until September 15.

Chilika Lake: Odisha

Chilika Lake is a brackish water lagoon, spread over the Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, at the mouth of the Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal, covering an area of over 1,100 km2. It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and in Asia and the second largest coastal lagoon in the world after The New Caledonian barrier reef in New Caledonia.

Coringa wildlife sanctuary: Andhra Pradesh

Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary and estuary situated in Andhra Pradesh, India. It is the second largest stretch of mangrove forests in India with 24 mangrove tree species and more than 120 bird species. It is home to the critically endangered white-backed vulture and the long-billed vulture.
