India, Guatemala sign MoU to cooperate in diplomatic training

India and Guatemala on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for expanding cooperation in the area of diplomatic training. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and his Guatemalan counterpart Dr. Jafeth Ernesto Cabrera Franco witnessed the signing of the MoU after the delegation-level talks. Earlier, he met Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, while stressing on his agenda of maintaining strong bilateral ties with the country. He also met the President of the Congress of Guatemala Alvaro Arzu Escobar. Vice President Naidu is on a five-day visit to Latin America’s Guatemala, Peru and Panama commencing from May 6. This is the Vice President’s first overseas visit after assuming office last year.

India ranks 4th in Asia-Pacific on power index

India has ranked fourth out of 25 nations in the Asia-Pacific region on an index that measures their overall power, with the country being pegged as a “giant of the future” but trails behind in indicators of defence networks and economic relationships. The Lowy Institute Asia Power Index measures power across 25 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region, reaching as far west as Pakistan, as far north as Russia, and as far into the Pacific as Australia, New Zealand, and the US. The top three of the list are US, China, Japan respectively.

15th Asia Media Summit to be hosted by India from May 10-12, 2018 in New Delhi

The 15th Asia Media Summit (AMS) 2018 is being hosted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, jointly with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi and Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), from 10th -12th May 2018 in New Delhi. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Textiles, Smt. Smriti Zubin Irani would be presiding as the Chief Guest over the Inaugural ceremony of the Summit on 10th May. The AMS 2018, an annual summit of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) Kuala Lumpur, is a prestigious summit in the Asia Pacific Region and India is hosting the event for the first time with the theme `Telling Our Stories – Asia and More’.

Google names Nitin Bawankule as Google Cloud India head

Tech giant Google recently said it has appointed Nitin Bawankule as the country head for Google Cloud India. Bawankule, who has been a part of Google’s India operations for over six years, will report to Google Cloud Managing Director (Asia Pacific) Rick Harshman, it said in a statement. An IIM Bangalore and VNIT Nagpur alumnus, Bawankule has over 20 years of experience and has worked at firms like Dell, Motorola Mobility, Whirlpool and Godrej GE Appliances.

L&T, BrahMos unveil naval launcher

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and BrahMos Aerospace have unveiled a new quad launcher prototype, heralding another attempt to boost the performance of naval warships. The new prototype provides superior firepower compared to the twin canister and has the capability to launch four missiles in a single or salvo (simultaneous) mode. Besides, the quad launcher is suitable for warships which have space constraints to accommodate a vertical launch module.

Donald Trump announces US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, reimposes sanctions

US President Donald Trump on 8th May scrapped the Iran nuclear deal signed by his predecessor Barack Obama and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran, saying the agreement had not prevented it from its quest for nuclear weapons. “I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal,” Trump said in a televised address from the White House. Trump said he is ready, willing and able to renegotiate a nuclear deal that would definitely kill Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and end what he called its sponsorship of terror in the middle east.

Carlos Alvarado sworn in as Costa Rican President

Alvarado swept to victory in April in a controversial election against conservative Protestant singer Fabricio Alvarado Munoz. The election had exposed divisions in the Central American tourist destination known for laid-back beach culture and pristine rainforests, but where some rural communities remain socially conservative. At 39, Alvarado is the country’s youngest president in modern history. He has spoken out in support of marriage equality, building a green transport network for the nation and for spurring economic growth to fight against insecurity.

Nikol Pashinyan becomes Prime Minister of Armenia

Armenia’s parliament elected Nikol Pashinyan as new Prime Minister in a 59-42 vote. His election comes after Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation as Prime minister of Armenia recently. Nikol Pashinyan is 42 years old. He is the leader of Civil Contract party. He is a former newspaper editor. He started a protest movement with a march of non-violence on 31st March 2018 demanding Serzh Sargsyan to resign.
