President of India Addresses The International Nurses Day Celebrations

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, graced and addressed the International Nurses Day Celebrations organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in New Delhi on May 12. Speaking on the occasion, the President said that International Nurses Day is an occasion for the entire nursing community to remember Florence Nightingale and renew their commitment to her ideals. Florence Nightingale had established nursing as a service to humanity. She motivated nurses to follow the path of dedication, commitment, and compassion.

India’s growth will accelerate to 7.3 pct: Fitch

Credit rating agency Fitch said that India’s economic growth will accelerate to 7.3 percent in the current financial year and 7.5 percent in the next fiscal year. In its second-quarter Sovereign Credit Overview for Asia Pacific region, Fitch said the growth rate will accelerate as money supply has recovered to its pre-demonetisation level and disruptions related to the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) have diminished.

Pradhan, UAE minister flag off the first consignment of Adnoc crude for India

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and UAE Minister of State & Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Group CEO Dr. Sultan Al Jaber flagged off the first consignment of 2 million barrels of ADNOC crude for Mangalore Cavern on 12th May. During the day, Pradhan also held the bilateral meeting with H.E. Dr. Jaber. Minister Pradhan was accompanied by Ambassador Navdeep Suri, senior officials, and CEOs for Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum.

Singer Mohit Chauhan roped in as Green Ambassador of Sikkim

The Sikkim government has nominated Bollywood singer Mohit Chauhan as the Green Ambassador of the state, an official notification said. The state government had earlier this year roped in AR Rahman as its ambassador to promote tourism in Sikkim. “Mohit Chauhan, Bollywood playback singer and singer of a band known as ‘Silk Route’, has been nominated as the Green Ambassador for promoting Sikkim as a Green Destination, nationally and internationally, on a voluntary basis,” the notification said.

Maharashtra signs MoU with Centre’s GRIHA council for green buildings

The Maharashtra government today signed a MoU with the Centres Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council to train state PWD officials to rate government buildings. A state government release issued today said that Maharashtra was the first state to sign such a MoU. As per the agreement signed today, the GRIHA Council, a green rating body under the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, would train PWD’s civil and electrical engineers and architects to rate government buildings as per its parameters, an official statement said.

Iraq holds the first nationwide election since IS defeat

Iraq began voting on 12th May in its first parliamentary election since declaring victory over the Islamic State group, with the country hoping to shore up a fragile peace and rebuild. Roughly 24.5 million voters face a fragmented political landscape five months after IS were ousted, with the dominant Shiites split, the Kurds in disarray and Sunnis sidelined. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi — who took over as IS rampaged across Iraq in 2014 — is angling for a new term, claiming credit for defeating the jihadists and seeing off a Kurdish push for independence.

Hamilton cruises to his 64th victory in Spanish GP

Four-time world champion Lewis Hamilton fended off his team-mate Valtteri Bottas to emerge as the quickest driver as Mercedes made one-two finish in the third practice session of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix at The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on 12th May. The British driver, who clocked the fastest lap of one hour and 17.281 seconds, was just 0.013 seconds ahead of Bottas, the Formula1.com reported.

Petra Kvitova wins third Madrid Open title

Czech 10th seed Petra Kvitova won the Madrid Open title for the third time on 12th May with a marathon 7-6 (8/6), 4-6, 6-3 victory over Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. Kvitova, who was also the champion in Madrid in 2011 and 2015, has now claimed four titles in 2018 after triumphs in St Petersburg, Doha and last weekend in Prague.
