World Day Against Child Labour: 12 June

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. The theme of World Day against Child Labour 2018 was ‘Generation Safe & Healthy’.

India makes groundbreaking reduction in MMR, says WHO

India has made groundbreaking progress in reducing maternal mortality ratio (MMR), from 556 per 100,000 live births in 1990 to 130 per 100000 live births in 2016. The present MMR has put India on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of an MMR below 70 per 100000 live births by 2030.

 

Piyush Goyal launches “Rail Madad” – An App to expedite & streamline passenger grievance redressal

In line with digital initiatives of Hon’ble PM, Indian Railways has for the first time completely digitized the Complaint management system. Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways & Coal today launched a new App “Rail Madad” – An App to expedite & streamline passenger grievance redressal. RPGRAMS (Railway Passenger Grievance Redressal and Management System), which has been developed by Northern Railway (Delhi Division) and comprises many novel features including ‘Rail Madad’ – a mobile App to register complaints by passengers through mobile phone/web.

Govt may launch Rs 500 crore credit enhancement fund in July: Finance Ministry official

The government is likely to launch a Rs 500-crore credit enhancement fund next month to facilitate infrastructure investments by insurance and pension funds, a senior finance ministry official said today. The fund was first announced in the financial budget for fiscal year 2016-17. The initial corpus of the fund, to be sponsored by IIFCL (India Infrastructure Finance Company), will be Rs 500 crore, and it will operate as a non-banking finance company, he said.

 

India to host first BIMSTEC war games in September

India will host the first military exercise of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) group focussing on counter-terrorism in September. As part of this, a conclave of the Army chiefs of all seven member-states is being planned. The exercise is scheduled to be held in Pune in the second week of September. “The aim of the exercise is to promote strategic alignment among the member-states and to share best practices in the area of counter-terrorism,” a defence source said.

 

Interest-free loan from employer taxable: ITAT

Interest-free loans extended by an employer are taxable in the hands of an employee as a perquisite, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has said. However, the valuation of the taxable benefit or perquisite, which forms part of the salary income of the employee, cannot be done in an ad-hoc manner and has to be computed as per the prescribed formula under the Income Tax Act, the tribunal said.

 

RBI turns net seller of US dollar in April

After remaining net buyer of the US dollars for past many months, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) became net seller in April, after it sold $2.483 billion of the US currency in the spot market, according to its data. During the reporting month, the apex bank bought $5.536 billion of dollars from the spot market, while it sold $8.019 billion. In April 2017, RBI was net buyer of the US currency as it had bought $1.751 billion and sold $1.185 billion in the spot market. In March this year, it was net seller as it had purchased $3.328 billion, and sold $2.332 billion.

 

Government appoints S Ramesh as Chairman of CBIC

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed S Ramesh, member of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) as its next Chairman. He will succeed present chairman Vanaja N. Sarna who retires in June 2018. CBIC is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, GST, Central Excise, Service Tax & Narcotics in India. It is part of the Department of Revenue under Union Ministry of Finance. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

 

DoT launches 5,000 WiFi choupals in partnership with CSC

Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday proposed to open extended banking counters across all 2.9 lakh common service centers (CSCs) that are operated by village level entrepreneurs to provide government services in rural areas. “My dream will come true if you accept the challenge to open extension counters of banks in 2.9 lakh places. If required we can collaborate with renewable and power ministry to set-up small solar units at your places so that electricity becomes free,” Goyal said after IRCTC and CSC e-Governance signed an agreement for train ticket bookings.

 

ISRO’s PRL scientists discover an ‘EPIC’ planet

In an epic Indian discovery, a team from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, has spotted for the first time a distant planet six times bigger than Earth and revolving around a Sun-like star about 600 light years away. Both the planet and the star have been named EPIC. EPIC 211945201b (or K2-236b) is the name given to the planet by the discovery team led by PRL’s Abhijit Chakraborty. The host star is named EPIC 211945201 or K2-236.
