India’s FY18 current account deficit grows 42% to $160bn
A surging import bill, which included crude oil, has resulted in a widening of the current account deficit (CAD) — the gap between imports and exports of goods & services — the to 1.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in FY18 from 0.6% in FY17. Oil imports resulted in net outflows of $71 billion in FY18, up from $55 billion in FY17. However, oil was not the only culprit with non-oil imports too up 18% to $361 billion from $305 billion in FY17 (see the net difference in the graphic). Also contributing to the increase in the import bill was the rise in gold purchases.
HDFC fifth largest consumer financial services company globally: Forbes
Housing finance major HDFC
has been ranked as the 5th biggest public company globally
in the ‘consumer financial services category
‘ on a list compiled by Forbes magazine. American Express
has topped this category, while Indiabulls Housing Finance is the only other Indian company (at 13th place) on the list. In the consumer financial services category, HDFC’s rank has moved up from 7th place last year.
- In the overall list, topped by China’s banking behemoth ICBC, HDFC took 321st place, up from 404th a year ago.
- There are a total of 58 Indian companies on the overall list of 2,000 firms from across the world.
- These include Reliance Industries at 83rd place, the only from India in the top-100. Besides, HDFC Bank is at 202nd, ONGC at 266th, Indian Oil at 270th and ICICI Bank at 320th.
SBI overtakes Kotak Bank in m-cap
Almost two months after leading private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank overtook SBI, India’s largest bank, in terms of market-capitalization, the state lender regained the position on 13th June. At the close of trade, SBI had an m-cap of Rs 2.56 lakh crore, while Kotak Bank was at Rs 2.53 lakh crore. The m-cap league table is topped by TCS with a figure that is close to Rs 7 lakh crore.
President to launch Solar Charkha Mission on June 27
The Solar Charkha Mission of the Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), will be launched by the President, Ram Nath Kovind on June 27 in New Delhi. The Mission will cover 50 clusters and every cluster will employ 400 to 2000 artisans. The Mission has been approved by the Government of India and will disburse subsidy of Rs. 550 crore to the artisans.
NITI Aayog to launch Composite Water Management Index
NITI Aayog has come out with various indices that not only fulfills its mandate of cooperative and competitive federalism but also challenges States and Union Territories (UTs) them to meet the aspirations of the new India. Furthering this mandate, NITI Aayog has come up with the Composite Water Management Index as a useful tool to assess and improve the performance in the efficient management of water resources. This index is an attempt to inspire States and UTs towards efficient and optimal utilization of water, and recycling thereof with a sense of urgency.
‘Bengaluru 2nd best city in the world for relocation based on living costs’
Bengaluru is the second least expensive city to relocate in terms of living expenses for the first month, following Egyptian capital Cairo, says a report. According to a study by furnished apartment search engine Nestpick, the first-month living expense in Cairo stood at USD 656, while for Bengaluru it was at USD 742.13. In the overall list, the Indian city was ranked 79th.
India among over 90 nations without paid paternity leave for new dads: UNICEF
Almost two-thirds of the world’s children under one-year-old – nearly 90 million – live in countries where their fathers are not entitled by law to a single day of paid paternity leave, the UNICEF analysis said. India and Nigeria, which have high infant populations, are among the 92 countries do not have national policies in place that ensure new fathers get adequate paid time off with their newborn babies.
Sulabh International founder awarded Nikkei Asia Prize
Well known Indian social worker and the man behind low-cost toilet revolution ‘Sulabh Shauchalya‘, Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, was on 13th June honored with this year’s prestigious “Nikkei Asia Prize for Culture and Community” at an award ceremony in Tokyo (Japan). Nikkei Asia Prize is an award which recognizes the achievements that have improved the lives of people throughout Asia.
17-year-old Amelia Kerr blasts 232* to record highest individual score in women’s ODIs
New Zealand batter Amelia Kerr created history on 13th June when she blasted a record-breaking unbeaten 232 against Ireland to become the second woman to score an ODI double-hundred at Dublin. Her 232 off 145 is the highest induvial score in women’s ODI and she thus broke the 21-year-old record held by Belinda Clarke of Australia. Clarke was the first cricketer to record a double-century in ODIs when she scored 229 against Denmark in Mumbai in 1997.
US, Mexico, and Canada to host FIFA 2026 World Cup
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after FIFA’s congress voted overwhelmingly on 14th June to back the tri-nation joint bid for the tournament and leave Morocco to miss out for the 5th time. The 2026 tournament will be the first expanded tournament featuring 48 teams, up from the current 32-team tournament, which begins in Russia on 14th June. Qatar to host the 2022 event.
