Delhi tops in investment potential index, Tamil Nadu second, followed by Gujarat
The national capital is followed by Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and West Bengal. The ranking of 20 states and one Union Territory of Delhi was based on six pillars — land, labour, infrastructure, economic climate, governance and political stability and business perceptions. NCAER launched the N-SIPI (State Investment Potential Index) series in March 2016. Gujarat had topped both the previous editions of the ranking. Assam, Jharkhand, and Bihar are ranked among the least favorable states for investment.
Hyderabad hosts maiden International Blockchain Congress
The maiden edition of the International Blockchain Congress (IBC) was kickstarted in Hyderabad on 3 August, to put India on the global roadmap for adoption of this new-age technology across sectors. The 3-day summit is organized by the government think-tank NITI Aayog and Nucleus Vision, in partnership with state governments of Telangana and Goa.
Govt achieves the target of 5 crores Free LPG Connections 8 Months ahead of schedule
Modi Govt. launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on 1st May 2016 and it is implemented by Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas through its Oil Marketing Companies i.e., IOC, BPCL and HPCL through their network of distributors across the country. Through PMUY, initially, 5 crore BPL households were targeted for providing deposit free LPG connections to BPL households by 31st March 2019. In a record time of 28 months for its launch, PMUY achieved the initial target of providing 5 crores LPG connection to BPL households. States of Uttar Pradesh (87 lakh), West Bengal (67 lakh), Bihar (61 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (45 lakh), Rajasthan (37 lakh) and Odisha (30 lakh) have accounted for nearly 65% of the connections provided. 47% of the beneficiaries are from the weaker sections of the society i.e., SC/STs.
Vikas Bonanza 456: a new deposit scheme launched by Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB)
On 3 August, Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) launched a new deposit scheme called Vikas Bonanza 456. The scheme is of a tenure of 456 days with an interest rate of 7.10 percent for public and 7.60 percent for senior citizens. It also offers an annualized return of 7.35% for the general public and 7.89% for senior citizens. A minimum of Rs.10,000 and a maximum of Rs.1 crore can be deposited under this scheme.
FICCI launches app ‘WOW’ for creating awareness on preventive healthcare
FICCI Ladies Organisation, the women’s wing of Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has launched a mobile application aimed at creating awareness on preventive healthcare. The mobile application “WOW” (Wellness of Women) is backed by city-based Apollo Hospitals Group that offers access to renowned doctors and provides health tips, a press release said. “This easy to use platform allows users to talk to doctors through video conferencing or connect with them via voice or email.
Tech Mahindra, Govt. of Telangana collaborate to launch India’s first blockchain district
The Telangana State Information Technology, Electronics, and Communication department (ITE&C) has signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the global digital transformation provider Tech Mahindra to launch India’s first Blockchain District in the state of Telangana.
HDFC Life ties up with Vijaya Bank to sell insurance products
HDFC Life Insurance and Vijaya Bank have entered into a corporate agency tie-up. As part of this plan, the bank will sell the insurer’s products through its branches. Sankara Narayanan, Managing Director & CEO, Vijaya Bank said that apart from deposits and loans, their customers will also get access to life insurance products.
Javed Akhtar bestowed with Shalaka Samman, the highest honor of Hindi Sahitya Academy
Hindi Academy Delhi has given its highest Shalaka Samman for 2017-18 to lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar. The award was given to him at a function in New Delhi which was chaired by Academy vice chairman Vishnu Khare and inaugurated by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The award includes a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh. The lyricist has also been honored with the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007. He is also a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for his collection of poems entitled Lava.
Supreme Court gets its 8th woman judge- Indira Banerjee
Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Indira Banerjee has been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. With this, the apex court gets its eighth woman judge, after Fathima Beevi, Sujata V. Manohar, Ruma Pal, Gyan Sudha Misra, Ranjana Prakash Desai, R. Banumathi and Indu Malhotra.
India elected president of Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development
India has been elected as the President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) for a period of two years. India got elected against Iran during voting which took place at the 44th annual gathering of AIBD in Colombo. Director General of All India Radio F. Sheheryar was re-elected as chair of the executive board while Sri Lanka was elected as vice-chair. Broadcasters from 26 countries in the region including India are full members of the organization. AIBD, established in 1977 under the auspices of UNESCO, is a unique regional inter-governmental organization and is mandated to achieve a vibrant and cohesive electronic media environment in the Asia-Pacific region through policy and resource development.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj calls on Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj called on Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov in Bishkek on 3 August. The External Affairs Minister is on a three-nation tour to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan as part of India’s efforts to boost strategic partnership with the resource-rich Central Asian nations. On the final leg of her visit, Mrs. Swaraj will reach Uzbek capital Tashkent on 4 August.
WWE star Kane elected Mayor in Tennessee
WWE star Kane has been elected Mayor in Tennessee. The 51-year old Republican, whose real name is Glenn Jacobs, won two-thirds of the votes in Knox County, beating Democrat Linda Haney. He ran on issues like keeping taxes low, improved infrastructure and transparency. Kane is the second WWE star to win public office in the US, following Jesse Ventura. Ventura was elected mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, in 1990, going on to be elected state governor in 1998.
