Parliament passes Criminal Law Amendment Bill, providing death sentence for raping girls below 12 years of age

The Parliament passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2018 with the Rajya Sabha clearing it by a voice vote. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill last month. The bill replaces the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21 this year. The bill stipulates stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape, particularly of girls below 12 years and the death sentence has been provided for rapists of girls under 12 years. The punishment for the gangrape of a girl below 16 years will invariably be imprisonment for the rest of life of the convict.

 

Parliament passes a bill to grant constitutional status to NCBC

It has had a long journey but finally, the 123rd constitutional amendment bill giving constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes has got Parliamentary assent on Monday. It will give the institution all powers to safeguard the rights of the socially and educationally backward classes and fulfills a long pending commitment of the central govt to the OBCs.

 

B-Hub: country’s first hub for biotech, pharma sector set up in Telangana

The Telangana government will set up a biotech and pharma facility, B-Hub, India’s first organized cluster for life sciences Research & Development at Genome Valley. The B-Hub will be set up through the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model.

 

World’s first-ever high energy storage device has been built in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh

It has been manufactured by the Bharat Energy Storage Technology Private Limited (BEST). It had an estimated cost of Rs 660 crore. It has a capacity of 1,000 MW and would be enhanced to 10 GW in the next six to seven years. The plant in Andhra Pradesh is expected to start commercial operations by May 2019.

 

International Conference on Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling inaugurated in New Delhi

NITI Aayog’s International Conference on “Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling: Policy Prescriptions” was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways & Ganga Rejuvenation, Shri. Nitin Gadkari at Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in the capital. Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog Shri. Rajiv Kumar, CEO, NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant and renowned experts from all over the world in material recycling took part in the deliberations at the conference.

 


Andhra govt, Holytech sign MoU

Andhra Pradesh government on 6 August signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with electronics giant, Holytech. Under the terms of the agreement, Holytech will set up its plant in 75 acres land in Tirupati and Chittoor districts, against an investment of Rs. 1400 crores. With the establishment of the plant, Holytech aims to generate 6000 direct and indirect jobs.

 


Ajay Data, first Indian in ICANN

The nominating committee of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has selected Ajay Data, Founder & CEO of Data XGen Plus and a global leader in email linguistic services, as a new council member of Country Code Supporting Organisation (ccNSO). Ajay Data is the first Indian to have been selected as a member of ccNSO and will be representing India at a global level. He will be the custodian of Asia, Australia and Pacific Islands as a member of ccNSO.

Sports Minister welcomes Webb Ellis Cup on maiden India visit

Sports Minister of India, Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, launched the Rugby World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour in India on 6 August, welcoming the Webb Ellis Cup to Delhi. This is the coveted trophy’s first visit to India as part of the Rugby World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour, which is visiting 18 nations in the countdown to Japan 2019, the first Rugby World Cup to be played in Asia.

 

Women’s Hockey World Cup 2018: Netherlands crowned world champions for record 8th time

Defending champions the Netherlands defeated Ireland 6-0 in the finals and won the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2018 title. The Netherlands has emerged as the world champions in Women’s hockey for a record 8th time.

From 30th July to 5th August 2018, BWF World Championships 2018 also known as TOTAL BWF World Championships 2018 was held at Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Sports Park in Nanjing, China.

 

 


Maitree 2018: India, Thailand joint military exercise held in Thailand

Exercise Maitree is a joint military exercise between the Indian Army and Royal Thai Army which will be conducted from 06 to 19 August 2018 in Thailand. It is a platoon level exercise which comprises of infantry component. The opening ceremony started with the familiarization of organization and display of weapons & equipment of both armies.

 

Pacific Endeavor-2018 under MCIP starts in Kathmandu

Pacific Endeavor-2018, a communication exercise under the Multinational Communications Interoperability Program (MCIP) started in Kathmandu on 6 August. The basic objective of the 12-day exercise is to develop common communications operating procedures to enable military forces in the Asia Pacific region to collectively work in the wake of the disaster. Around 270 personnel from 20 Asia-Pacific Countries are participating in the exercise, which is jointly organized by the Nepali Army and the United States Pacific Command.

 

China successfully tests waverider hypersonic aircraft ‘Xingkong-2’ capable of carrying nukes

China said that it has successfully tested its waverider hypersonic aircraft which is capable of flying independently and of carrying nuclear warheads. State-run Global Times reported that the Xingkong-2 – also called Starry Sky-2 – was fired at a target range in north-west China and tested for 10 minutes. During its independent flight, Xingkong-2 – designed by China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics reached an altitude of 30 kilometers at Mach 5.5.
