Govt approves an additional grant of nearly 19 crore rupees for flood-ravaged Kerala

The Union Health Ministry has approved an additional grant of 18 crores and 71 lakh rupees to flood-affected Kerala for disbursing to Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Committees. The grant will be given under National Health Mission.

 

India’s first interstate connected wind power project commissioned, says MNRE

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on 24 August said 126 MW wind power capacity, part of country’s first interstate transmission system (ISTS) auction, is commissioned in Bhuj.

 

Telangana govt increases free power units for SC/ST families

Telangana State Government today increased the free electricity supply to the families of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for domestic purpose up to 101 units. Currently, the state government is supplying free electricity to these families up to 50 units. The Govt. decided to increase the retirement age of Archakas in Temples to 65 years from the current 58 years and to pay their salaries through state treasury from next month onwards. The State Govt. has also increased the honorarium being paid to Imams and Muezzins of Masjids to Rs.5000 from the current Rs.1500/month.

Pranab Mukherjee launches ‘Neta app’

The app, founded by Pratham Mittal, allows voters to rate their political representatives. The aim is to foster political accountability by being an early indicator of how a leader’s performance is being perceived by voters. A good democracy cannot work without informed voters, good leaders and complete transparency and accountability, said former president Pranab Mukherjee on 24 August.

Reliance Jio tops Fortune’s ‘Change the World’ list

Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani’s telecom unit Reliance Jio has been ranked as the top company globally on Fortune’s ‘Change The World’ list that ranked companies using the profit motive to help the planet and tackle social problems. Jio has ranked ahead of pharma giant Merck and Bank of America, according to Fortune list released recently.

 

Paytm Partners with Alibaba to launch “Paytm AI Cloud for India”

One97 Communications Limited, the holding company for Paytm, announced the launch of an artificial cloud computing platform for the online payment portal. Named ‘Paytm AI Cloud for India’ the platform is aimed at developers, startups, and enterprises. They have partnered with Alibaba for Cloud Computing Infrastructure and will soon offer an enterprise-messaging solution in partnership with DingTalk.

 

Flipkart launches 2GUD, a new e-commerce portal for refurbished goods

After closing down eBay.in, the India operations of the e-commerce website which it acquired last year, Flipkart recently launched its new website to sell only refurbished products. Named 2GUD, the portal is like any other e-commerce site selling electronic items but has only certified refurbished products at cheap prices for value buyers.

Scott Morrison is new Australian Prime Minister

In a major turn of events, Liberal Party leader Scott Morrison has become the new Prime Minister of Australia after Malcolm Turnbull was forced out by party rivals. Morrison, the current treasurer, won an internal ballot 45-40 over former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. Turnbull did not stand in the leadership contest.
