President Kovind reaches Bulgaria on the 2nd leg of his three-nation visit
After concluding his Cyprus visit, President Ram Nath Kovind has reached Bulgaria on the second leg of his 3-nation visit. In the Bulgarian capital Sofia, he will meet a business delegation. Earlier, addressing a gathering of students, teachers, and dignitaries at the Cyprus University in Nicosia on 4th September, the President said that technologies like artificial intelligence, life sciences, and energy management will open new avenues of employment for the youth. The President also unveiled a bust of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore inside the Cyprus University campus.

National Teachers’ Day is being celebrated on 5th September
Teachers’ Day is being celebrated throughout the country on 5th September. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of educationist and former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. President Ram Nath Kovind has greeted teachers on the occasion. In a message, President said, a characteristic feature of Indian culture and heritage has been Guru-Shishya Parampara. Various programmes have been organized especially in schools and colleges to mark the occasion. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will give away National Teachers’ Awards at a function in New Delhi.
Curtain Raiser: Indo-Kazakhstan Joint Exercise KAZIND 2018
Indo-Kazakhstan Joint Army Exercise ‘KAZIND’ will be conducted between the Indian and Kazakhstan Army from 10 to 23 Sep 2018 in Otar region, Kazakhstan. This is the third joint military exercise between the two countries which have a history of extensive cooperation in the defence arena. The second edition of the exercise was held in India last year.
IOWave18: India to participate in Tsunami mock drill exercise
India, along with other Indian Ocean nations, is participating in a major tsunami mock exercise – IOWave18 – being organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. The aim of the exercise is to increase tsunami preparedness, evaluate response capabilities in each state and improve coordination throughout the region. IOC has coordinated setting up of Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS) in the aftermath of the tsunami on December 26, 2004.
Amazon becomes 2nd US company to reach USD 1 trillion value
E-commerce company Amazon on 4th September became the 2nd American company to cross USD 1 trillion in value. The Jeff Bezos-founded company and Apple now make up more than eight percent of the entire value of the S&P 500, CNN quoted senior index analyst for S&P, Howard Silverblatt as saying. Amazon, in just two decades, expanded far beyond its bookseller beginnings. It has revolutionized how people shop online. Apple topped the USD 1 trillion mark in early August.
Anushka Sharma to be conferred with Smita Patil Memorial Award 2018
Priyadarshni Academy’s 34th Anniversary Global Awards will take place Sep. 19 in Mumbai. The awards will be presented to various achievers from different genres for their services to the upliftment of humanity in multifarious ways. The awardees will be felicitated by leading political personalities. Priyadarshni Academy is a premier non-profit, socio-cultural and educational organization. Among the awardees, this year is Anushka Sharma, who will be given the Smita Patil Memorial Award. Indian Shooter Om Prakash bags gold at ISSF World Championship
Indian Shooter Om Prakash Mitharwal picked up his maiden gold medal at the International Shooting Sports Federation World Championships. He claimed the top honors in the 50 meters pistol event in Changwon, South Korea on 4th September. The 23-year-old, a bronze-winner in the 10m air pistol and the 50m pistol events of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast earlier this year, shot a score of 564 to finish on top.
Government felicitates India’s Asiad medal winners with cash awards
The Union Govt. on 4th September felicitated the medal winners of the 18th Asian Games with cash awards after the country registered its best-ever medal haul in the history of the continental mega sporting event. While individual gold medal winners were given away Rs 40 lakh, the silver and bronze winners took home Rs 20 and Rs 10 lakh each. India registered its best-ever medal haul in the history of the Asian Games, fetching 69 medals which included 15 gold, 24 silver, and 30 bronze.
International Day of Charity: 5 September
The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. The date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.”
International Women Entrepreneurs Summit gets underway in Nepal
The International Women Entrepreneurs Summit 2018 is being held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Vice President of Nepal Nanda Bahadur Pun inaugurated the summit yesterday. In his address, Mr. Pun emphasized upon empowering women in all areas including social, political and economic. He also expressed concern over increasing violence against women and highlighted the need for public efforts to eliminate it. The theme of the 3-day event is “Equality begins with Economic Empowerment”.
Rapid Trident: A joint military exercise by Ukraine with NATO
Rapid Trident is an annual joint military exercise launched by Ukraine with the United States and other NATO member countries. The joint military exercise is being held in Starychi, which is the western Ukrainian village from 2nd to 15th September.
Arif Alvi is Pakistan’s new President
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi was on 4th September elected as the 13th President of Pakistan, the result data from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) confirmed. Alvi secured the lion’s share of votes from the 1,100 that were cast, with the founding member of the PTI garnering nearly twice as many votes as Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) and Jamiat Ulema-e Islam – F (JUI-F) chief, Fazal-ur-Rehman, who was supported by the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), according to a press release from the ECP.
