Union Cabinet decisions on 5th September:
- Establishment and operationalization of permanent campus of 7 new IIMs at Amritsar, Bodh Gaya, Nagpur, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Visakhapatnam and Jammu.
- Continuation of the Centrally Sponsored Umbrella Scheme of Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats beyond 12th Plan from 2017-18 to 2019-20.
PM Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) to be an open-ended scheme with more incentives
Union Govt. has decided to make the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) an open-ended scheme and added more incentives to encourage people to open bank accounts.
The new changes include:
- Overdraft facility has been doubled from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 under the Yojana
- Age limit for availing overdraft facility under it has also been revised to 18 to 65 years from the earlier 18 to 60 years
- Accidental insurance cover for new RuPay cardholders has been raised from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh
The Finance Minister termed Jan Dhan Yojana as the world’s biggest financial inclusion scheme saying that 32.41 crore accounts have been opened under it with more than 81 thousand 200 crore rupees of deposit balance. He said, more than 7.5 crore Jan Dhan accounts are receiving Direct Benefit Transfer. Mr. Jaitley informed that 1.11 crore persons have subscribed for Atal Pension Yojana and 5.47 crore subscribers under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana with 1 lakh and 10 thousand claims. Launched in August 2014, the first phase of the PMJDY scheme focused on opening basic bank accounts and RuPay debit card with inbuilt accident insurance cover of Rs. 1 lakh.
Puducherry bags top position in National Clean School Award given by HRD Ministry
Union Territory of Puducherry has bagged top position in National Clean School Award after seven schools from Puducherry were awarded for cleanliness. Tamil Nadu bagged the second position in National Clean School Award. The third position was shared by Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
International Aviation Summit held in Delhi
The International Aviation Summit held in New Delhi, India between September 4-5, 2018. The seminar has been jointly organized by the Airports Authority of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation and International Air Transport Association (IATA).
J&K SAC okays Centre, state’s joint venture for the development of Ratle HEP
Jammu and Kashmir State Administrative Council (SAC) has approved the formation of a joint venture between the Centre and the state government for development of 850 MW Ratle Hydro Electric Project (HEP). HEP will be transferred to the state within a period of seven years from the start of commercial operation of the project. The sanction was accorded in a meeting of the SAC chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik.
Asia Index launches S&P BSE Private Banks Index
Asia Index Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE Ltd, on 4th September announced the launch of an index designed to measure the performance of private banks. The S&P BSE Private Banks Index is drawn from the constituents of the S&P BSE Finance Index, the Asia’s oldest exchange said in a statement.
ADB unveils its first Trade Finance Scorecard
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 5th September has launched its first Trade Finance Scorecard, a new tool to address market gaps stemming from the unintended consequences of global measures to fight money-laundering and terrorism. The ADB said the Trade Finance Scorecard focuses on issues related to the interpretation, implementation, and compliance with regulations designed to curb money laundering and the financing of terrorism in the context of correspondent banking and trade financing.
India retains WHO Regional Director position, Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh re-elected for 2nd term
India on 5th September retained the top WHO position in South-East Asia Region with Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh unanimously re-elected as Regional Director for another 5-year term beginning February 2019. The elections were held at the ongoing Regional Committee meeting of WHO South-East Asia.
India & Bulgaria sign 4 MoUs
India and Bulgaria sign four pacts on Investment, Tourism, Civil Nuclear Cooperation and Establishment of Hindi Chair at Sofia University, after delegation-level talks between President Ramnath Kovind and his counterpart Rumen Radev; President invites Bulgaria to become key partner in Defence and IT sectors under Make in India programme. President Ram Nath Kovind held detailed talks with his Counterpart Rumen Radev and invited Bulgaria to become a key partner of India in defence and IT sector under Make In India programme.
Divyansh-Shreya win bronze in 10m air rifle mixed team jr event in ISSF World Championships
Divyansh Singh Panwar and Shreya Agarwal netted a bronze in the 10 meters air rifle mixed team junior event of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championships in Changwon, South Korea. India now has 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals at the prestigious ISSF tournament.
Ashish Nehra appointed as RCB Coach for New Season
Ashish Nehra, current bowling coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore, has been confirmed as a coach and will be part of the coaching leadership team along with Gary Kirsten.
Typhoon Jebi leaves a trail of destruction across Japan
In Japan, the death toll in the typhoon Jebi stood at 10, with 300 people injured, according to the Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga. PM Shinzo Abe, tweeting on his official account, said the government was working to get the Kansai International airport back online which got cut off due to the typhoon. Typhoon Jebi is the worst storm to hit the country in 25 years.
