Odisha Legislative Council resolution passed in Assembly
The Odisha Assembly on 6th September passed a resolution for the establishment of a Legislative Council in the state. The resolution got the support of 104 of 147 members of the Assembly, while members of Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked out opposing the same. The Resolution will be sent to the Centre for approval. Currently, 7 states including Pradesh, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have a Legislative Council.
Home Minister inaugurates Defence & Homeland Security Expo and Conference
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called upon the law enforcement agencies to adopt new technologies enhancing their capacities to contain terror and counter the emerging challenges to homeland security. Inaugurating the 3 day Defence and Homeland Security Expo and Conference in New Delhi, Mr. Singh said, India has been facing security and terrorism-related challenges for years and there are multiple vulnerable areas that are prone to various risks.
Akshay Kumar, Pullela Gopichand included as trustees in ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ trust
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar and India’s national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand will be among the seven trustees of ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ trust, formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Trust has been given approval under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act, 1961, according to which the contributions to the trust will be exempted from Income Tax. The trust was created by the MHA in April 2017 in order to provide a platform to citizens for contributing and providing assistance to the families of slain Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel.
Monetary limit for filing cases in DRT doubled to Rs 20 lakh
The Govt. has doubled the monetary limit to 20 lakh rupees for filing loan recovery application in the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) by banks and financial institutions. A Finance Ministry notification said the move is aimed at helping reduce pendency of cases in DRTs.There are 39 DRTs in the country. To make the tribunals more effective and to facilitate fast disposal of debt recovery cases, the government has made several amendments to different laws, including the SARFAESI Act, 2002.
For the first time in 9 years, RBI buys 8.46 tonne of gold
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has bought 8.46 tonne of gold in the financial year 2017-18, the first purchase of yellow metal by the apex bank in almost nine years, a report said. The RBI held 566.23 tonnes of gold as on June 30, 2018, compared with 557.77 tonnes as on June 30, 2017, according to RBI’s latest annual report for 2017-18.
Airtel Payments Bank enables card-less cash withdrawal at ATMs
India’s first payments bank has announced that its customers can now make card-less cash withdrawals at over 1 lakh ATMs across India. It has partnered with Empays, a global provider of cloud-based payment solutions, under which it will enable Airtel Payments Bank’s savings account holders to withdraw cash using just their mobile phone through the card-less cash technology of Empays, called IMT (Instant Money Transfer). Over 100,000 ATMs belonging to some of the largest banks in the country such as State Bank of India, Axis Bank and Punjab National Bank are linked to the IMT system for card-less cash withdrawals. The network is licensed by the Reserve Bank of India as a payment system and is the only one of its kind in the country.
Temasek to put $400 million into NIIF fund
Singapore-based global investment firm Temasek has signed an agreement to invest up to $400 million in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) of India with an option for co-investment with NIIF in the future. As part of the agreement, Temasek will join the Government of India, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), HDFC Group, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance and Axis Bank as an investor in NIIF’s Master Fund and as a shareholder in National Investment and Infrastructure Limited, NIIF’s investment management company, said a NIIF statement.

J&K govt appointed Dilbagh Singh as Director General of State Police
Jammu and Kashmir government has appointed Dilbagh Singh as Director General of State Police, DGP. Mr. Singh will replace SP Vaid who has been posted as Transport Commissioner in the State.
IAF carries out first ever mid-air refueling of Tejas
India’s indigenously built fighter aircraft Tejas touched yet another milestone as it successfully carried out out the first-ever mid-air refueling, the Indian Air Force said. ”A Russian-built IL-78 MKI tanker transferred fuel to a Tejas MK I aircraft on Tuesday,” the IAF said in a press release.
India inks Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement with the USA
First-ever India-United States 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue was held in the national capital on 6th September. The meeting is being seen as a reflection of the shared commitment of India and U.S. to provide a positive, forward-looking vision to the strategic partnership and growing convergence on important issues between two countries. In a major strategic achievement, India has signed the second defence foundational pact with the US — the Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA). The pact will enable Indian military to obtain critical, secure and encrypted defence technologies from the other countries.
India ranks 19 in ‘Theft Ranking’ for countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials
India has improved its ranking by one spot from 2016 and now stands 19th in the ‘Theft Ranking’ for countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials, according to the Nuclear Security Index. The index was released by the US-based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), which is co-chaired by Sam Nunn and Ernest Moni. Australia, which was at the top in 2012, 2014, and 2016 among the 22 countries with weapons-usable nuclear materials, this time shares the top spot with Switzerland. Neighboring Pakistan ranks 20th.
Indian navy ships & aircraft arrive in Sri Lanka to participate in SLINEX-2018
Indian navy ships and aircraft have arrived in Sri Lanka to take part in the joint exercise SLINEX-2018 to be held with Sri Lankan navy at Trincomalee from 7th September. The exercise which was previously held biannually has been converted to an annual event from this year to enhance cooperation in the maritime domain and to further strengthen mutual trust and interoperability between the two navies.
Cambodia’s longtime leader Hun Sen begins another 5-year term
Cambodia’s one-party legislature on 6th September confirmed Prime Minister Hun Sen for another five-year term, cementing his status as one of the world’s longest-serving leaders. The National Assembly approved the appointment with all 125 members voting in favor without any debate.

Saurabh Chaudhary clinches gold in ISSF World C’ship
2018 Asian Games champion Saurabh Chaudhary continued his impressive run of form as he clinched a gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol Junior event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shooting World Championship at Changwon, South Korea on 6th September. The 16-year-old shattered the earlier record of 243.7 points to set a new world record with a total point tally of 245.5. In the team event, Indian squad comprising Saurabh Chaudhary, Arjun Singh Cheema, and Anmol won a silver medal with a score tally of 1,730 points.
