National Engineers Day: 15 September

India is celebrating Engineer’s Day (September 15) as a mark of remembrance and tribute to the great Indian engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, or M Visvesvaraya. Google has also honored the ‘Diwan of Mysore’ with a Doodle on his birth anniversary. M Visvesvaraya was chief engineer for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam on Kaveri river in Mysuru that created the biggest reservoir in Asia at that time. He was also the chief engineer of the flood protection system for Hyderabad and was also instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.

India moves up one rank on HDI to 130, Norway remains No.1

Amid existing disparities, India has climbed one notch to 130 out of 189 countries in the latest human development rankings released on 14th September by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

  • India’s Human Development Index (HDI) value for 2017 is 0.640, which put the country in the medium human development category.
  • Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Ireland and Germany lead the ranking, while Niger, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Chad and Burundi have the lowest scores in the HDI’s measurement of national achievements in health, education and income.
  • The HDI was introduced in the first Human Development Report in 1990 as a composite measurement of development that challenged purely economic assessments of national progress.

India’s first tribal tourism circuit inaugurated in Chhattisgarh

The country’s first tribal tourism circuit was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Tourism KJ Alphons in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh. Addressing the function, the Minister said, unprecedented work is being done by the central government in the tourism sector. In the last four years, the foreign exchange earnings from foreign tourist increased by 20 percent.

 


Wholesale inflation drops to a 4-month low of 4.53% in August

Inflation based on wholesale prices eased to a 4-month low of 4.53 percent in August on softening of prices of food articles, especially vegetables. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation stood at 5.09 percent in July and 3.24 percent in August last year.

 

India’s exports touch a three-month high of 19.21% in August; trade deficit narrows to $17.4 bn

India’s exports registered a healthy 19.21% growth in August 2018 (Year-on-year). The exports grew at the fastest pace in three months to reach $ 27.84 billion this month. The exports rose mainly on account of healthy growth in petroleum products, engineering, pharma, and gems and jewelry shipments. Even the imports rose by 25.41% in August to $ 45.24 billion and the hike was mainly due to costlier crude oil shipments.

 

India ranks third globally in terms of number of family-owned businesses

India, with a total of 111 companies and $839 billion total market capitalization, continues to rank third globally in terms of a number of family-owned companies, Credit Suisse said in its report released this week. It closely follows China (159 companies) and the US (121 companies).

  • The rating agency analyzed over 1,000 family-owned, publicly-listed companies, and compared their 10-year performance to a control group of more than 7,000 non-family owned companies globally.
  • In the Non-Japan Asian region, China, India, and Hong Kong dominate. Family businesses from these three territories have a combined market capitalization of $2.85 trillion.

 

Centre launches Dairy Processing & Infrastructure, Development Fund

Dairy Processing & Infrastructure Development Fund (DIDF) was launched by Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh in New Delhi with an outlay of Rs 10,881 crore. He said that with this scheme, 95,00,000 farmers in about 50,000 villages will be benefitted.

 

Andhra Pradesh Govt launches ‘e-Rythu’ app to create the cashless Agricultural ecosystem

The Andhra Pradesh Govt. and US global payments company Mastercard recently launched a mobile app called e-Rythu (e-farmer in Telugu) to streamline the agricultural sector in the state. The app seeks to connect stakeholders in the agricultural supply chain — buyers, farmers, and agents — on a single platform to offer an easy and secure way of trading agricultural products via their feature phones.

 


INMAS develops India’s first indigenous anti-nuclear medical kit

The kit, developed after two decades of work by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) here, has over 25 items, including radio-protectors that provide 80-90 percent protection against radiation and nerve gas agents, bandages that absorb radiation as well as tablets and ointments.

 


Asia Cup cricket tournament begins in Dubai

In Cricket, the Asia Cup began in Dubai on 15th September. Six teams are taking part in the ODI tournament, with defending champions India placed alongside Pakistan and Hong Kong in Group-A. Pool-B consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. In the opening match of the competition, Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh in a Pool-B game on 15th September. India, led by Rohit Sharma, will begin their campaign against Hong Kong on 18th September before taking on Pakistan the next day.

This year’s International Day of Democracy is an opportunity to look for ways to invigorate democracy and seek answers to the systemic challenges it faces. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj co-chaired the 23rd meeting of Inter-Governmental Commission on Technical and Economic Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) with Deputy Prime Minister of Russian Federation, Yuri Borisov in Moscow on 14th September. IRIGC-TEC is a standing body which annually meets and reviews ongoing activities of bilateral cooperation in the fields of bilateral trade and investment, science and technology, culture and other issues of mutual interest.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu left for Belgrade on 14th September afternoon for the first phase of his 7- day tour to three central European countries, Serbia, Malta and Romania. He is accompanied by Minister of State for (Finance) Mr. Shiv Pratap Shukla, 3 MPs from Rajya Sabha and one from Lok Sabha along with a business delegation headed by C.I.I.
