AP, Odisha & Madhya Pradesh Best Performing States in “Ease of Living Index” Under Amrut
On September 24, the “Ease of Living Index” rankings was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) at the National Dissemination Workshop on Ease of Living Index, 2018 in New Delhi. Andhra Pradesh has topped the charts followed by Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. The first round of Ease of Living covered 111 cities.

Hyderabad Metro Rail is now 2nd largest metro network in the country
Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan flagged off the metro train from the Ameerpet metro interchange station towards L.B.Nagar in the city suburb just after noon on 24th September. With the commissioning of this stretch, the Hyderabad metro now has an operational network of 45 km, making it the second longest metro line after New Delhi. Earlier, in November 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had commissioned a 29 km network across two corridors.
Dena Bank board clears merger with Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank
The board of Dena Bank on 24th September has cleared the merger proposal with Bank of Baroda and Vijaya Bank that was proposed by the government last week. The Mumbai-based lender is the first among the three to receive the board’s approval. Dena Bank is the smallest in the pack with a total business size of Rs. 1.73 lakh crore as on June ends as compared to Bank of Baroda’s Rs. 10.3 lakh crore and Vijaya’s Rs. 2.8 lakh crore. Dena is also the weakest among the three which is under the prompt corrective action framework of the Reserve Bank of India due to high non-performing assets which have led to the negative return on assets.
RBI shortlists 5 IT firms to implement CIMS
The Reserve Bank has shortlisted five IT firms including Infosys and TCS for implementation of a centralized information and management system (CIMS) for seamless data collection and validations. The vendors are: Capgemini Technology Services India, IBM India, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro Infotech and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
Microsoft and DSCI launch CyberShikshaa to train women in cybersecurity
Microsoft India and Data Security Council of India (DSCI) on September 24 launched CyberShikshaa, a three-year programme to create a pool of skilled cybersecurity women professionals in the country. As part of the initiative, 1,000 women from underserved communities will be trained in ten locations across the country and offered employment opportunities.
Mohamed Solih wins Maldives Presidential polls
The people of Maldives have voted out President Yameen and chosen Maldivian Democratic Party leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as their next President. Solih received 58 percent of the popular vote, compared to Yameen’s 41 percent, though formal results are still to be declared. Celebrations broke out across the 1,200-island tropical archipelago, which is a popular tourist destination. PM Narendra Modi called Ibrahim Solih and congratulated him on his victory.

BSNL partners with SOFTBANK and NTT to roll out 5G and IoT services in India
State-run telecom firm BSNL has inked a pact with Japan’s Softbank and NTT Communications to roll out 5G and internet of things technology in India, a top official has said.”We have signed an agreement with Softbank and NTT Communications to roll out 5G and IoT products and services in India. Under the agreement, we will look at solution especially for the smart cities,” BSNL chairman and managing director Anupam Shrivastava told.
Croatian footballer Luka Modric wins FIFA’s best player of the year award
Croatian footballer Luka Modric was named the world’s best male player at the Best Fifa Football Awards in London.
- Brazil and Orlando Pride forward Marta won the best female player award.
- France’s Didier Deschamps — whose side beat Modric’s Croatia 4-2 in the World Cup final — was named best men’s coach.
- Mohamed Salah received the Puskas award for the best goal, for his effort against Everton in the Premier League at Anfield last December.
- Peru’s supporters won the Fifa Fan Award after many thousands of them flew to Russia in support of their nation — playing at the finals for the first time since 1982. This accolade was voted for solely by supporters.
Serbia Junior & Cadet Open: India wins team titles in girls & cadet boys category
In Table Tennis, India has swept the team titles in the girls and cadet boys category at the 2018 Serbia Junior and Cadet Open in Belgrade. Delhi’s Payas Jain won the singles crown. The junior girls captured the team title.
