Important Union Cabinet Decisions on 3rd October

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the following:

  • Establishment of National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation in Sehore District instead of Bhopal.
  • Redevelopment of Railway Stations by IRSDC as Nodal Agency.
  • Second Protocol amending the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) between India and Singapore.
  • Budgetary support to Nepa Limited for the Revival and Mill Development Plan, payment of pending salary/wages.
  • Enhanced Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for Rabi Crops of 2018-19 Season to be marketed in 2019-20 Season.
  • MoU between India and Russia on Bilateral Cooperation in the Road Transport and Road Industry.
  • MoU between India and Russia on cooperation in the field of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.


Manipur declared as 23rd open defecation free state: CM N Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Tuesday declared Manipur as the 23rd state to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) in India. It is the 5th state in the North East to get the ODF tag. Dr. Najma Heptulla, the Governor of Manipur handed over the certificate of ODF Manipur to Singh during the observance of National Cleanliness Day at Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal.


Chandrababu Naidu launches Mukhyamantri Yuva Nestham

Educated unemployed youths between the age of 22 to 35 years belonging to BPL category with ration cards are eligible for the scheme to receive Rs. 1000/month. The Kerala government is already running a similar unemployment allowance scheme. The Uttar Pradesh government had announced one such scheme in 2012 but it could not be implemented.


SIDBI launches national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign “Udyam Abhilasha” in 115 aspirational districts

Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), has launched a national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign–Udyam Abhilasha, in 115 aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States reaching to around 15,000 youth. An official release said SIDBI will join to contribute to the transformation mission unleashed for the districts. The six-day campaign would be running parallelly from 3rd October across India.

‘Project Utkrisht’ launched by Indian Railways

On October 2, 2018, Indian Railways launched its Project ‘Utkrisht’ to upgrade 140 rakes of Mail/Express trains in the first phase.
The project aims to do the following:

  • Installing ‘Swachh Rail Toilet’,
  • Fitting of energy-efficient LED lights – in the main interior, doorway, gangway and inside toilets,
  • Braille signage & night glow stickers,
  • New types of fire extinguishers,
  • Health faucets, auto janitors, odonil containers, big size mirror etc.


IIT-Kharagpur named the national coordinator for research scheme- ‘SPARC’ of HRD ministry

On October 3, 2018, IIT-Kharagpur was named the national coordinating institute of the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.


Justice Ranjan Gogoi sworn-in as 46th Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was sworn-in as new Chief Justice of India. President Ram Nath Kovind administered him the oath of office at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan. He has succeeded Justice Dipak Misra who retired as Chief Justice of India on 2nd October. Justice Gogoi is the 46th Chief Justice of India. He will have a tenure of a little over 13 months.


WFE appoints Vikram Limaye as chairman of the working committee

The National Stock Exchange’s (NSE) managing director (MD) and chief executive officer ( CEO) Vikram Limaye has been appointed the chairman of the working committee and director on the board by the international industry body–World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).

Sudhir Garg appointed as CMD of National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC)

MSME Joint Secretary Sudhir Garg has taken charge as interim CMD (Chairman-cum-Managing Director) of National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC). NSIC is a PSU (Public Sector Unit) that functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).

GoI and ADB sign $ 100 Million Loan Agreement to expand Sewerage and Drainage coverage in Kolkata

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $100 Million Loan Agreement in New Delhi to continue to expand sewerage and drainage coverage, provide sewage treatment and strengthen the capacity of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for resilient urban services.


Frances Arnold, George Smith, and Gregory Winter win Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Frances H. Arnold of California Institute of Technology for the directed evolution of enzymes and to George P. Smith of the University of Missouri, US and Gregory P. Winter of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK for the phage display of peptides and antibodies.


South Sudanese surgeon Dr. Evan Atar Adaha receives 2018 Nansen Refugee Award

The South Sudanese doctor, Evan Atar Adaha was chosen for his 20-year commitment to providing medical services to people forced to flee conflict and persecution in Sudan and South Sudan, as well as to the communities that welcome them. Presenting the award in Geneva’s Bâtiment des Forces Motrices, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said he could think of “three or four reasons” why Dr. Atar was chosen to receive the award.

IBSAMAR VI: India, Brazil & South Africa joint Navy exercise

With the aim to build interoperability and mutual understanding as well as sharing of best practices, the 6th edition of IBSAMAR, a joint Multi-National Maritime Exercise between the Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies, is being held at Simons Town, South Africa from Oct 1-13.


Barham Salih elected as Iraq’s new president

Barham Salih replaces Fuad Masum. He is a former prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government and a former deputy prime minister of the Iraqi federal government. He has named Adel Abdul Mahdi as prime minister-designate and has bestowed him the responsibility of forming a new government.

India clinch Blind T20 series against England
