Putin arrives in New Delhi to attend the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin has reached New Delhi on a two-day visit to India. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj received Mr. Putin upon his arrival on 4th October evening. The Russian President will attend the 19th India-Russia Annual Bilateral Summit in the national capital on 5th October. In May this year, Mr. Modi had traveled to Russian coastal city of Sochi for an informal summit with Mr. Putin.
Civil Aviation Ministry Releases the policy on Biometric based Digital processing of passengers called “Digi Yatra”
Travelers will soon be able to enter airports in the country with facial recognition biometric under the government’s Digi Yatra initiative. Under the Digi Yatra, a passenger can get a Digi Yatra ID by sharing minimum details like Name, e-mail ID, Mobile number and details of one approved Identity proof where Aadhar ID is not mandatory. This DigiYatra ID will be shared by passengers while booking a ticket. Airlines will share the passenger data and DigiYatraID with the departure airport. DigiYatra Central Platform will be operational by end of February 2019. Bangalore & Hyderabad International Airports will be ready with pilot implementation by end of February 2019.
“Mission Gange” delegation led by Bachendri Pal meets PM
A group of about 40 enthusiasts with experience in mountaineering, who are embarking on an expedition to raise awareness on cleaning the River Ganga, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The group includes 8 mountaineers who have successfully climbed Mount Everest and is led by Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The expedition, which has been inspired by the Union Government’s “Namami Gange” campaign, has been named “Mission Gange.”
India Chem 2018 Conference begins in Mumbai
India Chem 2018, the 10th Biennial International Exhibition & Conference began in Mumbai on 4th October. The largest event of Chemicals and Petrochemical Industry in India will continue till 6 October. Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the conference.
Gross direct tax collection grows 16.7% to Rs 5.47 lakh crore in April-September
The provisional gross collections of Direct Tax up to September this year is higher than the collections for the corresponding period of last year. It is 16.7% higher at 5.47 lakh crore rupees. Finance Ministry, in a release, said the refunds amounting to 1.03 lakh crore rupees have been issued during April to September this year which is 30.4% higher than the amount issued during the same period in the preceding year. Net collections have also increased by 14% to 4.44 lakh crore rupees from April to September.
Chanda Kochhar quits ICICI, replaced by Sandeep Bakshi
Facing enquiry over charges of nepotism and conflict of interest, ICICI Bank managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) Chanda Kochhar quit the bank. She quit the post 6 months before her current tenure was to end. Kochhar has also resigned from all subsidiaries of the bank including ICICI Securities where she had sought reappointment as the chairperson. ICICI Bank said in a statement that the board elevated Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sandeep Bakhshi as the new managing director and CEO for five years until 3rd October 2023.
MobiKwik launches ‘Boost’ to offer instant loan within 90 seconds
MobiKwik has announced the launch of its breakthrough product ‘Boost’ to offer instant loan approval and disbursal to MobiKwik users. This is the first-of-its-kind of credit disbursal product, wherein loans of up to Rs. 60,000 are sanctioned as well as disbursed in a matter of 90 seconds. MobiKwik has partnered with a number of NBFCs to offer this service to its users. MobiKwik is the first wallet player to disburse loan amount in the user’s mobile wallet.
SpiceJet operates the first commercial flight to Pakyong airport
Sikkim became the latest addition to the country’s aviation map Thursday as SpiceJet operated the first direct commercial flight to Pakyong airport from Kolkata, the airline said in a statement.
Airtel Acquires Bengaluru-Based AI Start-Up AuthMe
Telecom major Bharti Airtel recently said it had acquired AuthMe ID Services, a Bengaluru based start-up focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based solutions.
Justice Surya Kant named Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice
Nearly 10 months after the Supreme Court collegium cleared Justice Surya Kant’s name for elevation as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, the President has issued the order of his appointment. Justice Surya Kant was a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The post of Chief Justice in Himachal Pradesh High Court has been vacant since April 2017.
IL&FS new board appoints Vineet Nayyar as vice-chairman and MD in its first meet
The newly-constructed board has appointed Vineet Nayyar as the Vice-chairman and MD of the Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS). The decision was taken in a marathon over a 5-hours meeting held to decide the fate of the institution that has 348 subsidiary companies. Nand Kishore has been appointed as the chairman of the audit committee and GC Chaturvedi will be the chairperson of the Remuneration Committee. Uday Kotak is the non-executive chairman of IL&FS.
World Teachers’ Day: 5 October
Held annually on 5 October since 1994, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day this year, we take this occasion to remind the global community that “The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher.” This theme was chosen to mark the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), where education is recognized as a key fundamental right. A right that cannot be fulfilled without qualified teachers.
India moves up to 28th rank in government e-payment adoption: Survey
India’s overall ranking on the government’s adoption of e-payments has moved up to 28th in 2018, from 36th in 2011, but it needs to do more on digital infrastructure access and socio-economic factors, the survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit commissioned by payments company Visa said. Norway leads the pack in the 73-country ranking, followed by France and Denmark.
India launches ‘Operation Samudra Maitri’ to help tsunami-hit Indonesia
India on 4th October launched ‘Operation Samudra Maitri’ to assist the survivors of last week’s earthquake and consequent tsunami in Central Sulawesi province of Indonesia. “Two IAF aircraft — a C-130J and a C-17 — carrying medical personnel and relief material flew 4th October morning for humanitarian assistance,” an External Affairs Ministry statement said.
Prithvi Shaw becomes youngest Indian to hit his debut Test century
Teenager Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to make a century on his Test debut on day one of the first Test against West Indies in Rajkot. Shaw, 18, reached his hundred off just 99 balls to surpass the record of Abbas Ali Baig.
