The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 86th Anniversary. To mark the occasion and in keeping up with the tradition, IAF has planned a grand Parade cum Investiture Ceremony at Air Force Station Hindan (Ghaziabad).

 

Maharashtra launches website and app ‘Maha madat’ to analyze drought situation

On October 6, The Maharashtra Government has launched a website and an application ‘Maha Madat’ for collectively analyzing the rainfall, crop situation and underground water level using modern technology.

 

India’s first dolphin research center to come up soon in Patna

National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC), India’s and Asia’s first such center would be soon opened on the banks of river Ganga river in the Patna University premises, Bihar. It will play an important role in strengthening conservation efforts and research to save the endangered mammal.

 

GI Tag for Alphonso from Konkan

Alphonso from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts of Maharashtra, is registered as a Geographical Indication (GI). A Geographical Indication or a GI is an indication used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. Darjeeling Tea, Mahabaleshwar Strawberry, Blue Pottery of Jaipur, Banarasi Sarees and Tirupati Laddus are some of the GIs.

 

IndiaSkills 2018, the Country’s biggest skill competition, concludes

The country’s biggest skill competition, India Skills 2018 has concluded in New Delhi. IndiaSkills 2018 was the 2nd edition of the nationwide competition organized by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India to identify, recognize, promote and reward the best talents in various skills. 23 states actively participated in organizing the competitions at the state and regional levels in which over 50 thousand participants took part.

 

Bilateral Maritime Exercise between Japan and India (JIMEX 18) begins at Visakhapatnam

Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) Ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Destroyer and Inazuma – a Guided Missile Destroyer arrived at Visakhapatnam on 07 October 2018. The Japanese ships would be participating in the third edition of JIMEX under the command of Rear Admiral Tatsuya F, commander of Escort Flotilla-4 (CCF-4).

 

Country’s first methanol-based cooking fuel rolled out by APL in Assam

NITI Aayog member and former director general of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Vijay Kumar Saraswat inaugurated the ‘Green and Clean Fuel Pilot Project on Methanol cooking Stove’. This launched the country’s first methanol based cooking oil by Namrup-based Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL). It is the first of its kind in realizing the concept of NITI Aayog’s programme of ‘Methanol Economy’. Initially, the product will be available only in the Northeastern Region. It is available in canisters of 1.2 kg capacity each, which will be priced at around Rs 32 and 18 Canisters will be equal to 1 domestic LPG Cylinder.

 


4th Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement, 2018-19

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in its fourth bi-monthly statement, issued on 05.10.2018, on the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation at its meeting, decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.5%. The GDP growth projection for 2018-19 is retained at 7.4% as in the August resolution. The decision of the MPC is in consonance with the Government’s assessment of inflation and growth going forward and for achieving the medium-term target for consumer price index (CPI) inflation of 4 percent within a band of +/- 2 percent., while supporting growth.

 

The Electronic Trading Platforms (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2018’ released by RBI

On October 5, 2018, RBI issued norms for operating Electronic Trading Platforms to enable transactions in eligible instruments. The directions are thus called: ‘The Electronic Trading Platforms (Reserve Bank) Directions, 2018’.

  • As per the norms, ETPs will strictly mean any electronic platform except the stock exchange, where transactions of eligible instruments would take place.
  • Also for an entity to operate as an ETP, it has to obtain the permission of the RBI beforehand.
  • Furthermore, an entity seeking authorization as an ETP operator should possess and maintain a minimum net worth of Rs 5 crore at all times.
  • These come into force with effect from October 05, 2018.

 

Karnataka govt unveils ‘Unnati’ scheme to help entrepreneurs

On October 6, 2018, Karnataka state government, unveils the Unnati scheme, which will invest up to Rs 20 crore to create an end-to-end support infrastructure for startups and entrepreneurs from a marginalized background. The Objective is to deliver sustainable development and social welfare which will identify, mentor, and promote young entrepreneurs from the SC/ST communities.

 

Atal Innovation Mission & SIRIUS sign MoU for the promotion of innovative cooperation between students of India & Russia

To promote innovative cooperation between students of India and Russia, a Memorandum of Understanding was exchanged between India’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and the Russian Federation’s SIRIUS Educational Foundation in the presence of the Prime Minister of India Shri. Narendra Modi and the President of Russia H.E. Vladimir Putin, in New Delhi on 5th October 2018. The AIM and SIRUS Education Foundation was represented by Mission Director Shri. R Ramanan and Ms. Elena Shmeleva respectively.

 


Indian International Science Festival begins in Lucknow

Four-day India International Science Festival (IISF) 2018 kicked off in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The subject of this year’s festival is science for transformation. Union science and technology minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan opened the event. President Ramnath Kovind had formally inaugurated the festival on 6th October. Today Science and Technology Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated Young Scientists Conference, Mega Science, Technology & Industry Expo, and Global Indian Science & Technology Stakeholders’ Meet (GIST).

 


Govt appoints Rakesh Sharma as IDBI chief

The government has appointed senior banker Rakesh Sharma as managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of IDBI Bank. Sharma was appointed for six months or until further orders and will have the task of ensuring a smooth transfer of majority ownership from the government to Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

Pankaj Sharma has been appointed as the ambassador and India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

 

US President Donald Trump nominates Rita Baranwal for assistant secretary of energy

US President Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American woman to head the nuclear energy division at the department of energy. If approved by the Senate, Rita Baranwal will be an assistant secretary of energy, responsible for nuclear technology research and the development and management of the department’s nuclear technology infrastructure.

 


Denis Mukwege, Nadia Murad jointly awarded 2018 Nobel Peace Prize

The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.

  • Mukwege, a gynecologist and surgeon, has long worked to treat thousands of women and girls affected by rape and sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Murad is a Yazidi woman from the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar, who was held as a sex slave by ISIS, she told CNN in an interview last year. In 2016, at age 23, she was made a UN goodwill ambassador for the dignity of survivors of human trafficking.

 


Para Asian Games: India bag 5 medals on Day 1

India started their campaign at the ongoing third edition of the Para Asian Games on a high note by clinching five medals, including 2 silver and 3 bronze, on the opening day of the tournament.

  • While Farman Basha won a silver medal in the Men’s 49 kg Powerlifting event, swimmer Devanshi Satijawon finished second on the podium in the Women’s 100m Butterfly in S-10 category.
  • The Indian men’s badminton team won the country’s first medal in the ongoing tournament, settling for silver after a narrow 1-2 defeat at the hands of Malaysia in the semi-final of the event.
  • Indian athlete Paramjeet Kumar won a bronze in the Men’s 49 kg Powerlifting event, while swimmer Suyash Jadhav settled for the third spot in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley in the SM-7 category.

 

India beat Sri Lanka to lift U-19 Asia Cup trophy

India clinched the Under-19 Asia Cup, beating Sri Lanka by 144 runs in the final. This is India’s 6th title in seven editions of the U-19 continental tournament, after failing to win it last year when Afghanistan clinched the trophy.

 

Virat Kohli becomes second fastest to score 24 Test centuries after Don Bradman

On 5th October 2018, India cricket captain Virat Kohli became the fastest batsman after Donald Bradman to reach 24 Test centuries, on the second day of the first Test match against the West Indies, in Rajkot, Gujarat.

 

Lewis Hamilton wins the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix

On October 7, 2018, Four-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the 2018 Japanese Grand Prix to take a 67-point lead over Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in the championship title race, who Secured Sixth Position.
