President inaugurates 29th Accountants General conference in New Delhi
Inaugurating the 2-day 29th Accountants General conference in New Delhi on 10th October, President Ram Nath Kovind said, the government is making great strides in ushering in digital India.
Union Cabinet decisions on 10th October:
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the following:
- MoU between India and Lebanon for cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors.
- Memorandum of Understanding between India and Romania in the field of tourism.
- Closure of National Jute Manufactures Corporation Ltd. and its subsidiary Birds Jute & Exports Ltd.
- Productivity Linked Bonus for Railway Employees.
- Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Finland on Environmental Cooperation.
- Establishment and operationalization of permanent campuses of the Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs) at Tirupati and Berhampur.
- The merger of National Council for Vocational Training, NCVT and National Skill Development Agency, NSDA to establish National Council for Vocational Education and Training, NCVET.
- Closure of Biecco Lawrie Limited
Cyclone Titli makes landfall in Odisha’s Gopalpur
Cyclone Titli has made landfall at Odisha’s Gopalpur on 11th October. Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed the town in the morning.
Chhattisgarh’s Veena Sendre is India’s first Trans Queen
Veena Sendre from Chhattisgarh was selected as India’s first ‘Miss Trans Queen’, in Mumbai. Veena Sendre is a former Miss Chhattisgarh. She hails from Mandir Hasaud village in Raipur.
An online monitoring system for Parliamentary assurances launched
Minister of State (MoS) for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel on 10th October has inaugurated the Online Assurances Monitoring System (OAMS), developed by the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry (MoPA). This system has made the information regarding assurances given on the floor of the Houses of Parliament paperless and available in digital format.
Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme 2018 -19
On October 10, 2018, the Govt. has launched the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme FY19.Objective:
To cut down gold imports and lower the current account deficitKey Points:
- The bonds will be sold every month from October 2018 to February 2019 through banks, Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd etc.
- The tenor of the bond will be for a period of 8 years with an exit option in the 5th, 6th and 7th year.
- Payment for the bonds will be allowed through cash payment up to a maximum of Rs. 20,000.
- It will also be allowed through DD, cheque and electronic banking.
- The earlier offers of 2.5% interest rate and capital gains tax exemption on redemption have retained.
- This scheme was re-introduced as an alternative to rising import duty on gold so as to avoid smuggling of gold
The 32nd world conference of World Union of Wholesale Markets, WUWM begins at Gurugram
Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Purushottam Rupala has inaugurated the 32nd world conference of World Union of Wholesale Markets, WUWM at Gurugram, Haryana. This is for the first time a WUWM conference is being organized in India at Gurugram, under the theme ‘The Wholesale Markets in the Digital Era: Challenges and Opportunities.’
National Postal Week 9-15 October 2018 to be celebrated in Maharashtra
Marking the World Post Day, Department of Posts is celebrating National Postal Week from 9-15 October 2018. Addressing a press conference on this occasion, Chief Post Master General, Maharashtra Circle, H. C. Agarwal informed that 1,293 post offices in Maharashtra are working as Aadhaar centers and that they have generated 50,594 individual new Aadhaar numbers and have done more than 4 Lakh updates of Aadhaar numbers.
Tushar Mehta appointed as Solicitor General of India
Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta has been appointed as Solicitor General of India. The Appointment Committee of the cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr. Mehta. He will remain in office till 30th of June, 2020 or till further orders. Mr. Mehta is currently serving as the Additional Solicitor General. The post of Solicitor General was vacant since October last year after the resignation of Ranjit Kumar.
Manasi Kirloskar appointed first UN in India Young Business Champion for the SDGs
Manasi Kirloskar, Executive Director and CEO, Kirloskar Systems Limited, has been appointed as the first United Nations in India Young Business Champion for the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
Brett Kavanaugh Sworn in as US Supreme Court Justice
Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as America’s 114th Supreme Court justice in a private ceremony at the Court after a 50-to-48 Senate vote to confirm him. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath, and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the judicial oath, according to a Supreme Court statement.
Scientists develop the first bio-electronic medicine
Scientists say they have developed the first bioelectronic medicine — an implantable, biodegradable wireless device that speeds nerve regeneration and improves the healing of a damaged nerve. Researchers at the Washington University in the US developed a device that delivers regular pulses of electricity to damaged peripheral nerves in rats after a surgical repair process, accelerating the regrowth of nerves in their legs and enhancing the ultimate recovery of muscle strength and control.
Youth Olympic Games: Saurabh Chaudhary bags Gold in 10m air pistol
Pistol shooter Saurabh Chaudhary has bagged the Gold Medal in the 10-meter air pistol event in the ongoing Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. The 16-year old blew the field away in the final as he finished a massive Seven and a half points ahead of his closest rival. It is India’s 3rd gold medal in the history of Youth Olympic Games and all three have come in this edition in Buenos Aires.
International Day of the Girl Child: 11 October
Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

World Obesity Day: 11 October
World Obesity Day is observed globally on 11 October with the view of promoting practical solutions to end the global obesity crisis. It was launched back in 2015 in order to raise more awareness about the rising problem of obesity and the diseases which are associated with it. This year, the theme of world obesity day focuses on weight stigma.
India ranked 147th in Oxfam world inequality index
On October 10, 2018, UK-based charity ‘Oxfam International’s report named ‘Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Index was released. Out of 157 countries measured, Denmark topped the list and India was ranked 147th based on its high and progressive taxation, high social spending and good protection of workers.
