India’s highest tricolor unfurled at Haj House in Mumbai
A big Indian tricolor measuring 20×30 feet and 350 feet above the ground was unfurled at the majestic Haj House here by Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on 17th October, an official said. The flag atop a 20-meter high mast on top of the iconic building near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai is billed as the highest tricolour installed on the terrace of any building of such height in the country.
Vice President attends 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Brussels, Belgium
The 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit began in Brussels. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, who reached the Belgian capital, will lead the Indian delegation at the two-day summit. The theme this year is, ‘Global Partners for Global Challenges’. The summit will prioritize issues related to connectivity, trade, and investment, sustainable development, climate change, terrorism, migration, maritime security, and cyberspace.
Govt launches ‘Swastha Bharat Yatra’ campaign to create awareness about safe food
The government recently launched a national campaign ‘Swasth Bharat Yatra’ on the World Food Day under which a pan-India cycle rally is being organized to sensitize people about eating safe food and be healthy, FSSAI chief executive Pawan Kumar Agarwal said.
India ranked 58th most competitive economy in WEF index
India has been ranked as the 58th most competitive economy on the World Economic Forum’s global competitiveness index for 2018. The WEF said India’s rank rose by five places from 2017, the largest gain among G20 economies. According to the report, the top performers in the “upper and lower-middle-income brackets”, India is catching up with or even outperforming the average among high-income economies.
- On the list of 140 economies, the US topped the list followed by Singapore and Germany.
- Among the BRICS economies, China topped the list at 28th place. India, however, remained the “South Asia’s main driving force”.
NIIF invests Rs 660 cr in HDFC Capital realty platform
NIIF’s Fund of Funds has invested Rs 660 crore in HDFC’s real estate investment platform HDFC Capital Affordable Real Estate – 2 (H-CARE 2). The investment is done along with a wholly-owned subsidiary of one of NIIF’s shareholders – the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). This is the second investment from National Investment and Infrastructure Fund since its inception.

Niti Aayog suggests PPP model for healthcare
Niti Aayog is offering a public-private partnership model for upgrading infrastructure at district hospitals. Government or district hospitals would give the private sector space, within their hospitals to treat noncommunicable diseases like cardiac, oncological and pulmonary diseases.
Suheil Tandon wins International Olympic committee award
Social Entrepreneur Suheil F. Tandon has won the International Olympic Committee’s Sport and Active Society Commission’s Grant Award for his contribution to sports for development. Suheil is the Founder of Pro Sports Development (PSD) and Executive Director of Martha Farrell Foundation.
Rural development ministry inks MoU with Lady Irwin College
The Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana — National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) of Rural Development Ministry and Lady Irwin College (Delhi University) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for establishing Roshni — Centre of Women Collectives-led social action. Roshni is technically and financially supported by the UNICEF India.
Nokia, BSNL Partner to Create 5G Ecosystem in India
Nokia and the government-owned telecom operator BSNL announced to work together to leverage 4G LTE technology for enabling greater operational efficiency at Nokia’s Chennai plant and prepare it for the 5G era with smart manufacturing. Nokia manufactures a range of telecom equipment across technologies at its factory in Chennai, catering to both domestic and global customers. The factory will now leverage Industry 4.0 solutions such as Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), connected Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance operations and increase productivity.
Adani, Total join hands to set up retail network, LNG terminal
India’s largest infrastructure conglomerate Adani Group and French energy giant Total SA recently announced a partnership to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals and fuel retailing network in India. Total, which had a few weeks back exited Royal Dutch Shell-led Hazira LNG import terminal in Gujarat, will join Adani in developing a 5 million tonnes a year import facility at Dhamra in Odisha.
Akash Malik becomes first Indian archer to clinch silver medal at Youth Olympic Games
Akash Malik became India’s first silver-medallist in archery at the Youth Olympic Games being held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 15-year-old son of a farmer lost a one-sided final to Trenton Cowles of the USA 0-6 as India concluded the youth Olympics with three gold, nine silver, and one bronze
