Indo-French Conclave held in Nagpur, Maharashtra

IPO timeline to be cut from 6 to 3 days

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has initiated the process to reduce the timeline for public issues from the current 6 days to 3 days in a phased manner by making it mandatory for intermediaries to provide retail investors the option of bidding through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). In the first phase starting January 1, market intermediaries have been directed to make available the UPI mechanism for retail investors along with the existing framework and processes to complete the initial public offer (IPO) process in T+6 days. Thereafter, in the second phase, the current mechanism of physically submitting bid forms from the intermediaries to the banks would be discontinued after 3 months. Simply put, the current online mechanism of Application Supported by Blocked Amount (ASBA) along with the UPI-based application system would be available from April 1, 2019.

A loan agreement was signed between India and Japan, for the construction of the Turga Pumped Storage in West Bengal. The Rupees 1,817 crore agreement was signed by the Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), C.S. Mohapatra, and Katsuo Matsumoto, chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Subhankar Dey wins SaarLorLux Open Badminton tournament in Germany

In Badminton, Subhankar Dey has won the SaarLorLux Open at Saarbrucken in Germany. In the summit clash, the unseeded Indian defeated 5th-placed Rajiv Ouseph of Britain, in straight games, 21-11, 21-14, in what was the first encounter between the two shuttlers. This is Subhankar’s first title of 2018. In March, he had finished runner-up in the Kabal International tournament at the Czech Republic.


Khachanov stuns Djokovic to win his 1st Paris Masters title

Karen Khachanov upset a tired-looking Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4 to win the Paris Masters title and deprive Djokovic of the chance on 4th November to match Rafael Nadal’s record of 33 Masters titles. Djokovic, a record four-time champion at the indoor event, looked out of energy after an epic 3-hour semifinal win against Roger Federer on 3rd November.


Ashleigh Barty wins WTA Elite Trophy tennis title

World Tsunami Awareness Day: 5 November

In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day. World Tsunami Awareness Day was the brainchild of Japan, which due to its repeated, bitter experience has over the years built up major expertise in areas such as tsunami early warning, public action and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts. The date for the annual celebration was chosen in honour of the Japanese story of “Inamura-no-hi”, meaning the “burning of the rice sheaves”. During an 1854 earthquake, a farmer saw the tide receding, a sign of a looming tsunami. He set fire to his entire harvest to warn villagers, who fled to high ground. Afterward, he built an embankment and planted trees as a buffer against future waves.


South Korean First Lady Kim-Jung Sook arrives in India

South Korean First Lady Kim Jung-sook arrived in New Delhi on 4th November for a 4-day visit during which she will participate in Diwali festivities and ceremony involving a memorial for a Korean queen in Ayodhya. According to Korean legend, Princess Suriratna from Ayodhya had traveled to Korea, married a king some 2000 years ago.
