Constitution Day: 26th November
26th November is observed as Constitution Day. On this day in 1949, the constitution was adopted which came into force on January 26, 1950, marking the beginning of a new era in the history of India. On 19th November 2015, during the year-long celebration of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar, Government of India in a gazette notification declared November 26th as the Constitution Day.
UN selects Noida, Greater Noida to participate in Global Sustainable Cities 2025 initiative
The United Nations on 25th November officially invited Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Greater Noida to become a member of its initiative which aims to create 25 model cities across the world that will be fully compliant with the sustainable development goals by 2025, officials said. The twin-cities in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, adjoining the national capital, have been selected in the “University City” category ahead of Mumbai and Bengaluru, which were also under UN consideration for the initiative, as the only invitee from India, a senior UN official said.
Uttarakhand cabinet clears proposal to rename Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport after AB Vajpayee
The Uttarakhand Cabinet on 25th November approved the renaming of Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport after late BJP stalwart and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. According to ANI, a resolution to this effect will be passed during the Winter Session of the state assembly after which it would be sent to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for its seal of approval.
J-K Governor inaugurated annual week-long ‘Jhiri Mela’ festival in Jammu
On November 23, 2018, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik inaugurated a week-long annual ‘Jhiri Mela’ festival at village Jhiri in Jammu district. The governor announced the construction of a ‘Sarai’ (inn) at village Jhiri for the devotees. The annual fair is celebrated as a commemoration to the memory of a martyred farmer named, ‘Baba Jittoo’.
3-day annual Jangalmahal Festival began in West Bengal
On November 23, 2018, a three-day-long annual ‘Jangalmahal’ festival began in the adjoining forested areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal. Initiated and organized by the ‘Jangal Mahal Udyog’, the festival aims to revive and popularise the culture and heritage of Jangal Mahal.
Odisha’s Baliyatra festival begins
On 23rd November 2018, the historic Bali Yatra festival was inaugurated in Cuttack, Odisha on the occasion of Kartik Purnima by State Finance Minister Shashi Bhusan Behera. The 10 days long festival is the largest trade fair in Orissa and is likely to witness a footfall of millions of people and more than 1500 makeshift stalls to showcase a wide range of products, including ethnic items brought by artisans from across the country.
The government decides to set up domestic Gold Council in India
The Government has decided to set up a domestic Gold Council in India. Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said this while inaugurating the 2nd Edition of India Gold and Jewellery Summit in New Delhi on 24th November. Mr. Prabhu underlined the need for an integrated Gold policy to address all the issues in a holistic way.
The government hiked outlay for phase I of FAME by additional Rs. 100 crore to Rs 895 crore
On November 25, 2018, the Ministry of Finance notified an increase of Rs. 100 crore in the outlay, to Rs 895 crore from Rs 795 crore, for the first phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles (FAME India) scheme.
Australia lifts Women’s World T-20 title for the fourth time by defeating England
Australia has lifted the Women’s World Twenty-20 title for the fourth time. In the title clash played at Antigua this morning, the Aussies recorded an emphatic 8-wicket win over England. Australia, first, bundled out England for just 105 and then with the bat, Australia overhauled the target in just 15.1 overs with 8 wickets in hand. India had lost in the semi-finals against England by 8 wickets.
Syed Modi International C’ships: Sameer Verma retains the title
Sameer Verma gave India a perfect end to the Syed Modi International Badminton Championships, winning men’s singles final 16-21, 21-19, 21-14 against China’s Guangzu Lu, to retain the title. He came from a game down to win the match in 70 minutes.
Bhavani Devi becomes first Indian to win a gold medal in Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Canberra
India’s Bhavani Devi won the gold medal in the Sabre event in the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2018 held in Canberra, Australia. Bhavani Devi is the first Indian to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Championship. She defeated England’s Emily Ruaux 15-12 in the final.
Mary Kom becomes the first female boxer to win 6 gold medals at World C’ships
MC Mary Kom created history after she outclassed Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women’s 48-kilogram light flyweight final of the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on 24th November. Mary Kom becomes the first female boxer to win six gold medals at world championships. The 35-year-old Mary Kom from Manipur previously won the gold medal in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 editions of the Championships. India ended the Championship at 3rd position with 4 medals including 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze. China topped the medal tally with 5 medals.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: 25 November
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today remains largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma, and shame surrounding it. The 2018 theme is Orange the World: #HearMeToo and like previous editions, the date marks the launch of 16 days of activism that will conclude on 10 December 2018, International Human Rights Day.
Former Union minister, Kannada actor Ambareesh dies at 66
Former Union minister and noted Kannada actor MH Ambareesh died after suffering a cardiac arrest. The 66-year-old was admitted to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru on 24th November evening after he complained of breathlessness. He was reportedly suffering from a kidney ailment. A three-time Lok Sabha member and also a former state minister, he had not been keeping well in recent years. Ambareesh is survived by his wife, actress Sumalatha and son Abhishek.
