PM Modi renames Ross, Neil & Havelock Islands in Andaman and Nicobar

PM Narendra Modi on 30th December has announced the renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar on the occasion of 75th anniversary of Tricolour hoisting by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Port Blair. Mr. Modi was addressing a public function at the historic Netaji Stadium in Port Blair. Here are the renamed islands:
  • The Ross Island as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep
  • The Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep
  • The Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep

 

PM inaugurates International Rice Research Institute’s South Asia Regional Centre

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Rice Research Institute South Asia Regional Centre (IRRI SARC) in Varanasi. It is the sixth campus of IRRI SARC. The institute will complement the government’s effort to double farmer’s income by 2022.

 

Rosogolla fest kicks off in Kolkata with the launch of postal stamp of the inventor

On 28th December, a postal stamp dedicated to the inventor of Rosogolla, West Bengal’s spongy and syrupy round-shaped sweet, Mr. Nabin Chandra Das was launched at the three-day Rosogolla fest known as “Bagbazar-O-Rasogolla” in Kolkata, West Bengal. The Rosogolla fest has concluded on 30th December 2018.

 

Delhi City Police first in the country to have e-Malkhana

With the launch of ‘E-Malkhana’ in the remaining 10 districts of national Capital, the Delhi Police has become first in the country to have digitalized malkhana in Police Stations of its all districts. Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest, Delhi Commissioner of Police (CP), Amulya Patnaik, said that the malkhana is critical in police functioning and digitization of malkhanas is a very important achievement.

PM launches comprehensive pension management software SAMPANN

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 29th December launched a comprehensive pension management software SAMPANN to facilitate pensioners of the telecom department. SAMPANN, an acronym for System for Accounting and Management of Pension, will help in the timely disbursement of pensions, he said at a public meeting in Varanasi. PM Modi said the Centre is using technology to improve ease of living and greater ease of access to citizen-centric services.

 

RBI upgrades ESAF Small Finance Bank as scheduled bank

The Thrissur, Kerala-based ESAF Small Finance Bank has received the Reserve Bank approval to operate as a scheduled bank. This makes ESAF the 5th scheduled bank from Kerala after Federal Bank, South Indian Bank, Catholic Syrian Bank, and Dhanlaxmi Bank.

 

J&K Bank launches Mandi Finance Scheme

Chairman and CEO of J&K Bank, Parvez Ahmed on 30th December launched Mandi Finance Scheme of the bank for traders of agriculture produce across the country at a function held in Amritsar. Amritsar besides being a pious and spiritual center is a major trading partner of J&K State and was the first city chosen by our bank to open J&K Bank’s first Branch in Punjab in the year 1973.

Swachh Survekshan 2018 award for Best Capital city in the Solid Waste Management given to GHMC. It also ranked 27th in the list of 4041 cities in the Swachh Survekshan Rankings.

Pakistan set to issue ‘Panda bond’ in Chinese currency to raise loans from China

The federal cabinet on Thursday approved the issuance of Pakistan’s first Renminbi-denominated bonds to raise loans from Chinese capital markets, as the country gradually moves towards giving the Chinese currency status at par with that enjoyed by the US dollar. The cabinet approved the issuance of the maiden renminbi-denominated ‘Panda Bonds’ during its meeting presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A Padma Bhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee, Sen paved the way for parallel cinema in the country with films like Ek Din Achanak, Padatik, Mrigaya, Akaler Sandhane, Chorus, Kharij, Khandahar, Bhuwan Shome, Akash Kusum and Calcutta 71.

 

Former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari died at 93
