Cabinet approves 10% quota for economically backward upper castes

Union Cabinet has approved 10%reservation in direct recruitments and for admission in higher educational institutions for the economically backward section in the general category. Sources said the reservation benefit is likely to be availed by those whose annual income is below Rs 8 lakh and have up to five acres of Agricultural land. The government is likely to bring a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday as the quota will be over and above the existing 50%reservation. Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution will have to be amended for implementation of the decision.

 

Norwegian PM arrives in New Delhi for a 3-day visit to India

Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg has arrived in New Delhi on a 3-day state visit to India. She was accompanied by senior officials from her government and a large business delegation. She will participate in the Indo-Norwegian Business Conference.

Indian economy expects to grow at 7.2% in 2018-19

Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.2% in 2018-19 against 6.7% in the previous fiscal mainly due to improvement in the performance of agriculture and manufacturing sectors. Releasing the first advance estimates of National Income for 2018-19, Central Statistics Office (CSO) said, the growth in GDP during 2018-19 is estimated at 7.2%as compared to the growth rate of 6.7% in 2017-18. Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg described the 7.2% GDP growth projection as very healthy.

Sheikh Hasina sworn-in as Bangladesh PM for the 4th term

Sheikh Hasina took oath as Bangladesh Prime Minister on Monday for the third consecutive term following her party’s sweeping victory in the 11th Parliamentary elections. President Mohammad Abdul Hamid administered the oath of office to Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka on Monday afternoon. Aiming to inject fresh blood in new Government, Sheikh Hasina this time has not chosen any representatives from the Awami League allies for her new cabinet as she did previously.

 

World Bank President Jim Yong Kim to step down on Feb 1

In a surprise move, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim announced that he will step down from his position on February 1 – much before the end of his term in 2022. Kim, 58, has been in this position for over six years now. In a statement, the World Bank said he will join a firm and focus on increasing infrastructure investments in developing countries.
Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank CEO, will assume the role of interim President effective 1st of next month. The president of the Washington-based World Bank has always been an American citizen nominated by the United States, which is the largest shareholder of this multilateral financial institution.

 

India takes over operations of Chabahar port in Iran

India has taken over operations of the strategic Chabahar port in the Sistan-Balochistan province of Iran’s southern coast. This is the first time India will be operating a port outside its territory. The Shipping Ministry in a statement in New Delhi today said that the Government of India took over the operations of a part of Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar, in Iran during the Chabahar Trilateral Agreement meeting held there on December 24, 2018.

Maharashtra to host 2nd edition of Khelo India Youth Games

Maharashtra is all set to host the second edition of Khelo India Youth Games which will officially begin tomorrow in Pune. More than 9000 players from different states will participate in 18 different games at Khelo India Youth Games. It has already been announced that Youth Olympic Gold Medallist in shooting Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhari, as well as weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga will be among the cream of India’s youth sporting talent competing at these games.
