Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg has delivered inaugural address in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with Observer Research Foundation is organizing the flagship annual geopolitical and geostrategic conference. The theme of the Dialogue this year is “A World Reorder: New Geometries; Fluid Partnerships; Uncertain Outcomes”.

 

SC reinstates Alok Verma as CBI Chief

The Supreme Court on 8th January reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI chief. However, the Court said, the committee constituted under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act will have to consider the matter afresh and that Mr. Verma cannot take any major policy decisions until then.

RBI appoints Nandan Nilekani as chairman of Digital Payments Panel

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 8th January announced the formation of a high-level panel to assess digitization of payments in the country. The Committee on Deepening of Digital Payments will be chaired by Nandan Nilekani, the RBI said in a statement. The committee, which will have four other members, will review the existing status of digitization of payments in the country and assess the current levels of digital payments in financial inclusion, according to the RBI.

 

Jana Small Finance Bank launches Current Account with Unique Auto-Sweep Facility

Jana Small Finance Bank has launched Current Account with Auto-Sweep facility. The facility will enable bank’s existing and potential new customers to auto sweep-in and sweep-out the idle funds in the current account to Sweep Fixed Deposit and earn high interest. For a tenor of 365 days on sweep deposit, the customers will be able to earn interest of 8.5%.

India born Gita Gopinath has joined International Monetary Fund as its chief economist. She has the first woman to occupy the top IMF post. Gopinath succeeds Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld as Economic Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Research Department. Obstfeld retired on December the 31st.

Vikram Misri takes charge as new Indian ambassador to China

On January 8, 2019, India’s new ambassador to China, Vikram Misri, took charge of the post. Vikram Misri, took charge as India’s new envoy to China. He reported to Hong Lei, Deputy Director General of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing. He is a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and replaced Gautam Bambawale who retired in November 2018.

Started in 2017 upon the expulsion of the United States’ previous ICC recognized National Federation, USA Cricket has continued to work towards a unified U.S. cricket community and the ICC’s recognition will only help to further the unification efforts.
