RBI cuts repo rate, reverse repo rate in its 6th bi-monthly Monetary Policy of 2018-19

The Reserve Bank of India in its bi-monthly monetary policy has reduced repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%. RBI’s 6-member monetary policy committee also brought down a reverse repo rate to 6%. The repo rate is the rate at which the Reserve Bank lends short-term money to the banks, while the reserve repo rate is the rate at which the central bank borrows money from commercial banks. It was the first policy review by the RBI after the appointment of its governor Shaktikanta Das in December last year. The RBI governor said that they expect GDP growth rate to be at 7.4% in fiscal 2019-20 which is up from 7.2% estimated for the financial year 2018-19 by the central statistical organization.

RBI raises collateral-free farm loan limit to Rs 1.6 lakh

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has announced that the limit of collateral free agricultural loans has been increased from one lakh to 1.6 lakh. Addressing the post monetary policy announcement in Mumbai on 7th February, Mr. Das said the decision has been taken in view of the overall inflation and rise in the agricultural input costs since 2010 when the limit was last revised. Mr. Das said this move will enhance coverage of small and marginal farmers in the formal credit system.


India becomes the world’s 2nd largest LPG consumer and Importer after government’s Ujjwala push

India is now the 2nd largest consumer and importer of the LPG in the world. This is attributed to government initiatives to push for cleaner alternatives to traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and cow dung. The import of LPG grew by 12.5% over the past five years to 12 million metric tons (13 million tons) in 2018-19. India now stands at 2nd place behind China. The exporters of LPG to India include Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iran.


Smriti Irani launches India Size project in Mumbai

Mirabai Chanu notched up gold at EGAT Cup in Thailand

World champion Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as notched up a gold medal at the EGAT Cup in Thailand. Chanu won the 48 kg category gold with an effort of 192 kg in the silver level Olympic qualifying event.

Recognition of international standards of copyright protection and incentives for intellectual property have helped India jump eight places to 36th position on the International Intellectual Property (IP) Index, the highest gain for any country this year. The index, which analyses the IP climate in 50 global economies, is brought out by the US Chamber of Commerce’s Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC).
