India Occupies 11th position in Global Gold Holdings
India, which is the world’s largest consumer of gold, has the 11th largest gold reserve, with the current holding pegged at 607 tonnes, as per the latest report by the World Gold Council (WGC). The numero uno slot is occupied by the U.S., which boasts of gold reserves of 8,133.5 tonnes, followed by Germany with 3,369.7 tonnes. Whereas, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is included and is third on the list with total gold reserves of 2,814 tonnes.
Arecanut gets its first GI tag for ‘Sirsi Supari’
For the first time in the arecanut sector, ‘Sirsi Supari’ grown in Uttara Kannada has received the Geographic Indication (GI) tag. It is cultivated in Yellapura, Siddapura and Sirsi taluks. Totgars’ Cooperative Sale Society Ltd., Sirsi, is the registered proprietor of the GI.
SBI launches doorstep banking for senior citizens, differently-abled
Public lender State Bank of India on 12th March launched ‘Doorstep Banking’ for senior citizen customers over 70 years of age, differently-abled customers and infirm customers including visually impaired customers. Doorstep Banking Services are available to fully KYC compliant account holders, with a valid mobile number registered with the bank and residing within 5 km of radius from their home branch. This service will not be available for accounts operated jointly, minor account and accounts of non-personal nature. Eligible customers can avail these services with a nominal fee of Rs 100 per transaction for financial transactions and Rs 60 per transaction for non-financial transactions.
Retail inflation rises to a four-month high in February 2019
Retail inflation rose to a four-month high of 2.57 percent in February this year, mainly driven by higher food prices. According to the data released by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 1.97 percent in January this year and 4.44 percent in February last year.
Industrial growth slows to 1.7% in January 2019
Industrial output growth stood at 1.7 percent in January this year on account of slowdown in the manufacturing sector. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data released on 12th March, factory output as measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had grown by 7.5 percent in January last year.
Internet of Things India Congress 2019 to be held on Aug 22-23
IoT India Congress, an event which will see digital technology leaders converge to discuss and explore business opportunities in mainstreaming Internet of Things (IoT), will be held in Bengaluru on August 22-23, 2019. The IoT India Congress 2019 will include tracks on segments such as healthcare, manufacturing, telecom, smart cities, energy, retail, cybersecurity, skills and development, IoT Standards, legal and regulatory, and agriculture. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) IoT Panel on 12th March held a conference to announce the upcoming 4th edition of the IoT India Congress.
Axis Bank names Rakesh Makhija as new Chairman
Private sector lender Axis Bank, on 12th March, named Rakesh Makhija as its new Non-Executive Part-Time Chairman. Makhija, who is the Chairman of SKF India, will take over from current Axis Bank Chairman Sanjiv Mishra, when his term comes to an end on July 17.
Ex-RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan received Yaswantrao Chavan National Award
Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan, for his contribution towards economic development, was awarded the ‘Yashwantrao Chavan National Award 2018‘ on March 12, 2019, which was the 106th birth anniversary of late Yashwantrao Chavan, the first chief minister of Maharashtra.
5th SAAF Women’s Championship begins in Nepal
In the opening match, hosts Nepal easily defeated Bhutan by 3-0. Defending champion India will take on the Maldives tomorrow. The match will start at 2.45 P.M. Indian Time. India remained unbeaten in 19 matches from last four editions of the championship. In the six-team competition, India has been drawn in Group-B alongside the Maldives and Sri Lanka, while hosts Nepal has been kept in Group-A with Bangladesh and Bhutan.
India approves USD 250 million investment for infrastructure projects in Nepal
India has extended a grant assistance of up to USD 250 million to Nepal for the reconstruction of infrastructures in the areas of housing, education, health and cultural heritage that was destroyed during the devastating April 2015 earthquake which saw the death of over 9,000 people.
