India ranks 76th on WEF Global Energy Transition index

India has moved up two places to rank 76th on a global energy transition index. This annual list, compiled by Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), has ranked 115 economies on how well they are able to balance energy security and access with environmental sustainability and affordability. The top three performers are Sweden, followed by Switzerland and Norway.

President Ram Nath Kovind has left on a three-nation visit to Croatia, Bolivia, and Chile

President Ram Nath Kovind has reached the Croatian capital Zagreb on the first leg of his three-nation tour to Croatia, Bolivia, and Chile. He has been accorded a rousing welcome by Croatian dignitaries and officials of the Indian embassy.

 

IAF inducts first four heavy-lift Chinook helicopters

Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa announced the induction at a ceremony held at Air Force base in Chandigarh. Chinook helicopters will be deployed at Chandigarh’s Air Force Station 12 Wing. Speaking at the induction ceremony, Dhanoa said that these helicopters are capable of vertical lift and heavy lifting in hilly areas.

 

Admiral Sunil Lanba commissions nuclear, biological, chemical training facility ABHEDYA at Lonavla

Chief of naval staff Admiral Sunil Lanba on Saturday commissioned the nuclear, biological, chemical (NBC) training facility – ABHEDYA, at INS Shivaji, Lonavla. The training facility has been built by Goa Shipyard Limited to help the Indian Navy train personnel in NBC damage control.

 

Mountain climber Malavath Poorna scales Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia

Malavath Poorna, the youngest girl to summit Mount Everest when she was just 13 years old, has added another feather in her cap. Now at 18, she has scaled another major peak the Carstensz Pyramid which stands at a height of 4884m in Indonesia. As part of her 7-Summits Challenge, which is about scaling the seven tallest mountains, one in each continent, Poorna has scaled five peaks with her latest addition. Now, Poorna is just two peaks away from achieving her goal.

NITI Aayog organizes FinTech Conclave 2019

To shape India’s continued ascendancy in FinTech, build the narrative for future strategy and policy efforts, and to deliberate steps for comprehensive financial inclusion, NITI Aayog organized a day-long FinTech Conclave in New Delhi on 25th March. The Conclave featured representatives from across the financial space – central ministries, regulators, bankers, startups, investors, service providers, and entrepreneurs. Shaktikanta Das, Governor of RBI inaugurated the Conclave in the presence of Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog and Mr. Subhash Chandra Garg, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.

 

RBI appoints a five-member committee headed by Nandan Nilekani to deepen digital payments

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has said that the central bank of the country has appointed 5-member committee under the chairmanship of Nandan Nilekani to further deepen digital payments and enhance financial inclusion through Fintech. He said the RBI has requested the committee to give recommendations in 3 months in this regard. Mr. Das was speaking on 25th March at the inaugural event of Financial Technology (Fintech) Conclave being organized by NITI Aayog in New Delhi.

 

Axis Bank opens 4,000th branch in Pune

Private sector lender Axis Bank, on 25th March, opened its 4,000th branch at EON, Kharadi, in Pune. The new branch was inaugurated by Amitabh Chaudhry, Managing Director, and CEO, of Axis Bank, and Ravi Narayanan, President, and Head Branch Banking, Axis Bank.

Centenarian Man Kaur on 25th March clinched the gold medal in the shot put event in the World Masters Athletics Meet in Torun, Poland. The World Masters Athletics Championships involves events like track and field, cross country, and road running events, for athletes above 35 years of age. The 103-year-old clinched the yellow metal with the best effort of 2.13 meters.
