Centenary of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre observed on 13th April 2019
On 13th April 2019, the 100th-anniversary Jallianwala Bagh Massacre also known as the Amritsar massacre was observed. On 13th April 1919, a huge number of people gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar to celebrate the harvest festival of Baisakhi and to protest against the Rowlatt Act. During the event, troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Dyer opened fire at the people laying scores of people to rest.
RBI net buyer of dollar for the 3rd month in a row snaps up $825 m in February
The Reserve Bank of India has remained a net buyer of the US dollar for the third consecutive month in February, when it bought $825 million from the spot market, according to the data from the central bank. In the reporting month, the central bank bought $2.086 billion and sold $1.261 billion in the spot market as the rupee was under pressure.
RBI gives 12 years to LIC for reducing stake in IDBI Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given 12 years to Life Insurance Corp to reduce its stake in IDBI Bank, accepting the life insurer’s argument that it is a long-term investor in the struggling bank which had nearly 30% of its advances as bad loans in the December quarter. Two people aware of the development said that RBI, which classified IDBI as a private sector bank last month, has given LIC 12 years to cut its stake in the bank by 10%. “RBI has stipulated that after 12 years LIC has to reduce stake in IDBI Bank by 10 percent to 40 percent,” said a source in the direct knowledge. “LIC will take a view on how they are able to divest it.”
Retail inflation inches up to 2.86% in March
Retail inflation saw a marginal rise of 2.86 percent in March this year on account of increase in prices of food articles and fuel. According to the data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the inflation based on the Consumer Price Index was 2.57 percent in February this year. On a yearly basis, it was 4.28 percent in March 2018.

Japan’s Kento Momota withstood a barrage of smashes from Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting to rally for a thrilling 10-21, 21-19, 21-13 victory in the Singapore Open final on 14th April. In the women’s final, Tai Tzu-ying claimed her second Singapore Open title with a 21-19, 21-15 victory over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.
Lewis Hamilton clinched Formula One’s 1000th race title
British racing driver, Lewis Hamilton has achieved his 75th career victory in Formula One’s 1000th race at the Chinese Grand Prix on 14th April 2019. He has delivered a crushing performance to win this title.
New Palestinian authority govt led by PM Mohammed Ishtayeh was sworn in
President Mahmoud Abbas picked Mohammed Ishtayeh as the Prime Minister, a move that is being said to have deepened the internal Palestinian divide at a time when prospects for a peace deal with Israel are possibly at their lowest point ever.
World’s largest plane Stratolaunch makes the first test flight
The world’s largest airplane — a Stratolaunch behemoth with two fuselages and six Boeing 747 engines — made its first test flight on 13th April in California. The mega jet carried out its maiden voyage over the Mojave desert.
