Vice President Naidu says govt has made it a priority to reach out to Indians overseas

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu embarked on 4-day visit to Vietnam on 09 May. His visit is expected to enhance India’s comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam. The Vice President will participate in 16th United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) at Tam Chuc pagoda in northern Ha Nam province of Vietnam. He will address the Indian Community and will interact with Vice President of Vietnam and will hold delegation level talks.

CBIC organizes a meeting of Regional Heads of Customs Administration of Asia Pacific Region of the WCO in Kochi

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is organizing a meeting of the Regional Heads of Customs Administration of Asia Pacific Region of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) in Kochi from 08th to 10th May 2019. India is hosting this meeting in its capacity as Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific region that it assumed on 1st July 2018 for a two-year period.
This meeting is being chaired by Mr. Pranab Kumar Das, Chairman, CBIC. The meeting will take stock of the progress being made in carrying forward the programmes and initiatives of WCO to promote, facilitate and secure the cross-border trade in the region and the capacity building and technical assistance required to achieve this goal.

Airtel to merge broadband satellite business with Hughes India unit

Bharti Airtel has decided to merge its broadband satellite, or VSAT, business with that of market leader Hughes Communications India, to create a stronger no. 1 in the space, in a bid to increase scale, improve operational efficiencies and target new customers in areas such as in-flight connectivity. Hughes Communications will own 67% share of the new entity while Airtel will own the rest.


India Ratings downgrades Yes Bank with a negative outlook

India Ratings has downgraded the bank’s long-term rating to ‘IND AA-’ with a negative outlook while reaffirming short-term rating. Last week, Icra downgraded the long-term ratings of the lender.
Accordingly, six instruments with a total borrowing of over Rs 33,000 crore were also downgraded. Yes Bank had also reported its maiden loss of over Rs 1,506 crore in the March 2019 quarter, driven by a near 10-fold spike in provisions.

Former SC Judge K S Radhakrishnan Appointed Member Of Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal

K S Radhakrishnan, former Supreme Court Judge, has been appointed as a member of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal, London. He will render his services as a member of the Tribunal for a period of four years from 1st of June, 2019 to 31st of May, 2023. Justice (Retd.) K S Radhakrishnan served as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat and Jammu & Kashmir High Courts before his term in the Supreme Court from 2009-2014.

WHO partnered with IFBA for eliminating industrially produced trans fats by 2023

The WHO has welcomed its partnership with the International Food and Beverage Alliance (IFBA) to achieve the eliminating industrially produced trans fats by 2023 target. It said: “Eliminating industrially produced trans fat is one of the simplest and most effective ways to save lives and create a healthier food supply.”
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a statement, said they had met the IFBA representatives, including chief executive officers from several of the 12 companies comprising the alliance on May 2 to discuss actions to eliminate industrial trans fats and reduce salt, sugar and saturated fats in processed foods.


Singapore passes fake news law

Singapore’s parliament passed an anti-fake news bill that has been criticized by rights groups, journalists and tech firms over fears it could be used to clamp down on freedom of speech.
The law will require online media platforms to carry corrections or remove content the government considers to be false, with penalties for perpetrators running as high as prison terms of up to 10 years or fines up to S$1 million ($735,000).


India signs protocol for export of chilli meal to Chinese markets

India and China signed a protocol for the export of Indian chilli meal to China. This is the fourth protocol signed between the two nations over the past year allowing the export of farm commodities from India.
Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan and General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) Vice-Minister Li Guo, who signed the protocol at a meeting here, also discussed issues related to India’s pending request for the clearance of more farm products for the Chinese market, said an official release.

NR Madhava Menon, the father of modern legal education, passed away

Prof N.R. Madhava Menon, an educationist, scholar, and the pioneering spirit behind modern legal education in India, passed away early on Wednesday. He was 84 years old.
Menon was the founder director of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bangalore and headed it for 12 years. After that, he established West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in 1998 and later presided as the founder director of Judicial Academy (NJS), Bhopal, till 2006.
