DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight Test Of ‘Abhyas’

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Monday successfully conducted the flight test of ‘Abhyas’, a high-speed expendable aerial target (HEAT), which offers a realistic threat scenario for the practice of weapon systems. The flight test was conducted at the Interim Test Range, Chandipur, in Odisha. The configuration of ‘Abhyas’ is designed on an in-line small gas turbine engine and it uses indigenously developed micro-electro-mechanical systems-based system for navigation and guidance.

 

Young Scientist Programme (Yuvika-2019) unveiled by ISRO

The state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled the maiden two-week long India Young Scientist Programme (Yuvika-2019) for the students selected from 29 states and 7 Union Territories across the country. In all 110 students from every State and Union Territories are participating in a two week residential training program at four centers/units of ISRO/DOS—Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram; U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru; Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad and North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Shillong.

 

Exercise Bull Strike at Teressa Island, Andaman

The military drill, called Exercise Bullstrike, was conducted to showcase joint operations capability of the armed forces. During the exercise, the army personnel got the chance to display their prowess by undertaking company level airborne operation at Teressa island. 170 troops from three services carried out para drop operations in a Combat Free Fall and Static Line mode. The Indian Army also shared a video of its personnel skydiving by jumping out of IAF aircraft and subsequently landing on the ground, surrounded by clear blue water.

 

Nabard announces Rs. 700-cr venture capital fund for age, rural startups

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on Monday announced an Rs 700-crore venture capital fund for equity investments in agriculture and rural-focused startups. NABARD has been contributing to other funds till now and this is the first time that the rural development bank has launched a fund of its own.
The fund has been launched by Nabventures, a subsidiary of NABARD, and has a proposed corpus of Rs 500 crore with an option to retain over-subscription of Rs 200 crore, called as the greenshoe option.

 

Paytm partners with Citibank to launch its first credit card—Paytm First Card

Digital payments company Paytm, in association with Citibank, launched its first credit card called Paytm First Card. Paytm First Card comes with unlimited cash back and will be accepted in India as well as globally.
The card is issued by Citibank and doesn’t involve any hidden fees or charges, the company said in a statement. An annual fee of Rs 500 will be fully waived off on expenses above Rs 50,000 per year. Paytm also offers an equated monthly installment (EMI) option on purchases made on the card.

 

Airtel, HDFC Life Insurance to offer free cover for prepaid customers

Bharti Airtel and HDFC Life Insurance have tied up to offer life cover for customers who get a prepaid recharge done. Airtel’s new Rs. 249-prepaid bundle — which will include 2 GB data, unlimited calls across networks, and 100 SMSes per day — will also offer a cover worth Rs. 4 lakh from HDFC Life.
The policy will be available to all customers aged between 18-54, and requires no paperwork or medical examination, except for a declaration of good health from the customer.

 

ICICI Bank joins hands with travel portal Goibibo to launch multi-currency card

ICICI Bank announced the launch of a co-branded multi-currency card with online travel booking portal Goibibo. Customers can use one card for multiple currencies and enjoy discounts on flights and hotel bookings.
Anyone traveling abroad, whether they hold an ICICI Bank savings account or not, can apply for the Goibibo ICICI Bank Travel Card on the Goibibo website and mobile app. It is accepted across 200 countries and 4.6 crore merchants globally and can be loaded with up to 15 currencies.

 

HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company launched ‘Mosquito Disease Protection Policy’

India’s 3rd-largest non-life insurance provider in the private sector, HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company launched a scheme termed ‘Mosquito Disease Protection Policy’ which will cover a person against common mosquito-borne diseases, namely, Dengue Fever, Malaria, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, Kala-azar, Lymphatic Filariasis, and Zika Virus.

 

Dinesh Pangtey appointed as CEO of LIC Mutual Fund

Dinesh Pangtey has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of LIC Mutual Fund. He started his career as a direct recruit officer with LIC of India in 1984 and has risen through the ranks to this senior position. Prior to taking over as CEO of LIC Mutual Fund, Dinesh Pangtey was Director and Chief Executive Officer at LIC HFL AMC.

 

Sanjiv Puri appointed as Chairman and MD for ITC

ITC Group’s present Managing Director (MD) Sanjiv Puri was elevated as new Chairman and Managing Director of the company. Puri’s elevation comes after noted industry leader and erstwhile ITC Chairman Y C Deveshwar passed away after a brief illness. Mr. Puri has been a director on the board of the company since 2015 and was appointed the Chief Executive Officer in February 2017, assuming independent charge of the executive leadership of the conglomerate.

 

Virat Kohli, Smriti Mandhana bag top honours in CEAT International Cricket Awards

Kohli has been named as the International Cricketer of the year during the CEAT International Cricket Awards 2019. Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana was given the International women cricketer of the year award at the same ceremony. While Jasprit Bumrah was named the international bowler of the year, Cheteshwar Pujara won the international Test cricketer of the year. IPL-winning captain Rohit Sharma also bagged the international ODI cricketer of the year award.

India’s G.S. Lakshmi first woman to be inducted into ICC match referee panel

India’s G.S. Lakshmi has become the first woman to be appointed to ICC’s international panel of match referees and will be eligible to officiate in international games with immediate effect. Claire Polosak had become the first ever woman umpire to stand in a men’s ODI, earlier this month. Lakshmi, 51, who first officiated as a match referee in domestic women’s cricket in 2008-09, has overseen three women’s ODI matches and three women’s T20I matches.

 

Sana Mir became highest wicket-taking women spinner in ODI

A 33-year old, Pakistan’s off-spinner Sana Mir became the highest wicket-taking women spinner in One Day International (ODI) cricket. She had taken her 147th wicket against South Africa in the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Championship held in South Africa. She has surpassed 30-year old West Indies spinner Anisa Mohammed and 39-year old Australia’s Lisa Sthalekar. Both players have taken 146 wickets in ODI cricket.

 

Madrid Open 2019: Kiki Bertens Wins Women’s Title

The Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens pulled off a surprise 6-4, 6-4 victory over Simona Halep to win the Madrid Open, denying the Romanian a return to the top of the world rankings climbing to World No 4. In men’s final Novak Djokovic beats Stefanos Tsitsipas to win his third Madrid Open title.

 

Lewis Hamilton wins Spanish GP as Mercedes seal fifth consecutive one-two

Lewis Hamilton won the Spanish Grand Prix for a third consecutive year after overtaking Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas at the first turn in Barcelona. Although the Finnish driver began on pole position after going fastest in qualifying, Hamilton sped past his championship rival just seconds into the fifth race of the season.
