Maldives confers the highest honor on PM Modi

The Maldives on Saturday conferred its highest honor accorded to foreign dignitaries — Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen — on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award was conferred by Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih at a ceremonial function held in Male. He received this award during his two-nation tour to the Maldives and Sri Lanka.


Piyush Goyal Lead Indian Delegation In G20 Ministerial Meet In Japan

Trade and Economy Ministers of the Group of 20 major economies met in Japan to discuss ways to reorder trade rules and finances in an era of technological change and protectionism. The meetings of financial leaders in the southern city of Fukuoka and of economic ministers in Tsukuba, near Tokyo, are aiming to forge a consensus on a range of issues to be endorsed by leaders who will meet in late June in Osaka.
The central bank governors and other financial regulators meeting in Fukuoka flagged risks from upsets to the global economy as Beijing and Washington clash over trade and technology. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal attended the G-20 ministerial meeting on Trade and digital economy in Japan.


Hardeep Puri to launch Swachh Survekshan 2020

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched ‘Swachh Survekshan League 2020’ on June 6 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). It would be a quarterly cleanliness assessment of towns and cities in India, and will be integrated with Swachh Survekshan 2020, the fifth edition of the annual cleanliness survey of urban India to be conducted between January-February next year.
The objective of the Swachh Survekshan survey, conducted by an independent third party, is to encourage large-scale citizen participation, ensure the sustainability of initiatives taken towards garbage-free and open defecation-free cities.


India’s First Dinosaur Museum Park Inaugurated In Gujarat

A new dinosaur museum and fossil park, located in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. A government release claimed the museum and park, situated in Raiyoli village in Balanisor taluka, was the country’s first such facility and the world’s third.
The release said the facility, equipped with modern technology like 3D projection, virtual reality presentations, interactive kiosks, and life-size dinosaur replicas, is an enhanced version of the dinosaur museum and park that already existed there.


India signs Rs 300-crore deal with Israel to buy 100 more ‘Balakot bombs’

The Indian Air Force has signed Rs 300-crore deal with the Israeli government to buy as many as 100 SPICE bombs. The newly ordered SPICE bombs are an advanced version of SPICE-2000 bombs which were used by the IAF during the air strikes in Balakot on February 26, in which the Indian forces reportedly eliminated around 300 Jaish-e-Mohammed militants. Since the deal has been signed under emergency powers, the Israeli government is expected to deliver these bombs in the next three months.

RBI Imposes Rs. 2 Crore Fine On Kotak Mahindra Bank

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) fined Kotak Mahindra Bank Rs. 2 crore ($288,525) for not furnishing details about the shareholdings of its majority stakeholders and its plans for complying with stake dilution norms. The RBI said it decided to impose a penalty after reviewing the bank’s reply to a notice seeking an explanation about why it had not complied with regulatory norms.

Greta Thunberg wins Amnesty prize for raising climate change

Sweden’s teenage climate activist, Greta Thunberg, was awarded a prestigious Amnesty International prize on June 8th for mobilizing world public opinion on the looming peril of global warming. Thunberg, a fierce campaigner with a gift for public speaking, has become a figurehead for young climate activists internationally. International organizations often invite her to climate change events in an effort to put a human face on the fight to curb carbon emissions.


Telangana-based NGO wins UN’s Equator Prize

The women sangams (groups) of the Deccan Development Society have bagged the United Nation’s Equator Prize for 2019. They have been selected for standing as ‘an outstanding example of local, nature-based solutions to climate change and sustainable development.’
The women farmers, majority of them are Dalits, have been building their own seed banks and growing millets in the predominantly rain-fed villages of Sangareddy district.

Jammu and Kashmir govt appoints R K Chibber as interim chief of J&K Bank

The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday removed J&K Bank Chairman Parvez Ahmad and appointed R K Chibber as interim chairman of the lender. “Parvez Ahmad, Chairman cum Managing Director, shall cease to be Director on the Board of Directors of the Bank and consequently be no longer the Chairman cum Managing Director of the board,” an order issued by Additional Secretary, Finance, Vishal Sharma said.


N Gopalaswami appointed BCCI’s electoral officer

Supreme Court appointed CoA on Friday announced N Gopalaswami as the BCCI’s electoral officer to supervise the elections of the cricketing board and the Indian Cricketers Association. Gopalaswami is a former Chief Election Commissioner of India and he will be operating from the BCCI headquarters. On May 21, the CoA had announced that BCCI elections would be held on October 22, 2019.

French Open 2019: Rafael Nadal wins 12th French Open title, Barty wins first grand slam

Rafael Nadal maintained his stranglehold on the French Open by beating Austrian fourth seed Dominic Thiem in four sets to lift a 12th men’s singles title. The Spaniard won for the third straight year at Roland Garros with a 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 victory in a high-quality final. The 33-year-old is the first player to win 12 singles titles at the same Grand Slam and has now won 18 majors overall.
Australian Ashleigh Barty beats Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova in the French Open final to win her first Grand Slam singles title and complete a fairytale return to the sport. The eighth seed won 6-1 6-3 against 19-year-old Vondrousova on the Paris clay.

World Oceans Day: 8th June

World Oceans Day provides an opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve the ocean. The Government of Canada proposed setting a World Ocean Day during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The UN officially recognized 8 June as World Oceans Day in December 2008. The Day is coordinated by The Ocean Project, a not-for-profit international community foundation.
The theme of World Oceans Day 2019 is ‘Gender and the Ocean’.
