I&B Ministry Launches Antarashtriya Yoga Diwas Media Samman

Acknowledging the positive role and responsibility of the media in disseminating the outreach of Yoga in India and abroad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has instituted the first Antarashtriya Yoga Diwas Media Samman (AYDMS) to mark the contribution of media in spreading the message of Yoga.
A total of 33 awards will be conferred grouped into 3 categories namely Newspaper (11), Television (11) and Radio (11). The duration for the coverage for AYDMS would be from 10 June to 25 June 2019 and awards will be distributed in July 2019.

India’s GDP growth may accelerate to 7.2% in FY20: Goldman Sachs

American brokerage Goldman Sachs Friday pegged the Indian GDP growth to accelerate to 7.2 percent in 2019-20 on lower oil prices, political stability, and removal of infrastructure bottlenecks. Risks to the estimate, which is higher than the RBI’s projection for a 7 percent growth, are on the “downside” because of the issues in the non-bank lenders, it said.
It can be recalled that the growth had dipped to a nearly five year low of 5.8 percent for the March quarter at 5.8 percent, dragging down FY19 growth to 6.8 percent. In a report that came a day after the policy review by RBI, in which key rates were cut 0.25 percent to spur growth, the brokerage said it expects an acceleration in GDP to 7.2 percent.


Paytm Payments Bank ahead of major banks in digital transaction target

Paytm Payments Bank has received a target of 501.16 crore digital transactions for the financial year 2019-20 from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), higher than the targets set for major banks including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Punjab National Bank.
In a statement, Paytm Payments Bank said it is only behind the State Bank of India, which has the highest target for digital transactions. In FY 2018-19, the payments bank surpassed the target of 354 crore transactions and recorded 393 crore digital transfers.


Foreign exchange reserves swell by $1.8 bn to $421.8 bn

The country’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $1.875 billion to $421.867 billion in the week to May 31, as per the data of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In the previous week, the reserves had risen by $1.99 billion to $419.99 billion.
Forex reserves had touched a record high of $426.028 billion in the week to April 13, 2018. After remaining stable for past few weeks, gold reserves declined by $62.9 million to $22.958 billion, according to the RBI data. The special drawing rights with the International Monetary Fund fell by $2.3 million to $1.443 billion.


Bajaj Finserv partners with motherhood hospitals to provide Life Care finance facility

In a bid to expand its Life Care Finance segment, Bajaj Finserv, through it’s lending arm Bajaj Finance Ltd, announced its partnership with motherhood hospitals, a comprehensive network of women & children hospital.
The partnership will enable patients at all motherhood hospitals to avail Life Care Finance (LCF) from Bajaj Finserv that converts their medical and wellness bills into an interest-free EMI finance loan.


MCA, SEBI sign MoU for data exchange

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for data exchange between the two regulatory organizations.
The MoU comes in the wake of the increasing need for surveillance in the context of corporate frauds affecting important sectors of the economy, a statement issued by the Ministry said. The agreement was signed by K.V.R. Murty, Joint Secretary, MCA, and Madhabi Puri Buch, Whole Time Member, SEBI in the presence of senior officers from both the organizations.

BharatPe names Abhishek Shah as Marketing Head

Abhishek Shah, former marketing leader at IKEA, India has joined BharatPe as the Marketing Head. BharatPe, a fintech company serving offline retailers and businesses through UPI payments, lending, and other financial services, has announced the appointment of Abhishek Shah as Marketing Head.


Patel takes oath as Chief Justice of Delhi HC

Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on June 07. Lt Governor Anil Baijal administered the oath of office to Justice Patel at a function held at Raj Niwas. Earlier, Justice Patel was posted at the Jharkhand High Court. Justice Patel, who has replaced justice Rajendra Menon, who retired after a judicial career spanning nearly two decades.

2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh retires from international cricket

Yuvraj Singh, the player-of-the-tournament in India’s triumphant 2011 World Cup campaign, announced his retirement from the game. 2011 World Cup as he amassed 362 runs including one century and four fifties. He also picked 15 wickets, won four Man-of-the-Match awards and was also awarded the Player of the Tournament
Yuvraj ends his career with 304 one-day internationals, in which he made 8701 runs and 1177 runs in 58 Twenty20 Internationals and 1900 runs in 40 Tests.


China will host the 2023 Asian Cup, confirms AFC

China will stage the 2023 Asian Cup after all the other countries in the running dropped their bids, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed a possible dry-run for hosting a World Cup.
It will mark the second time China has hosted the quadrennial continental tournament, after the 2004 edition when it finished runners-up to Japan.


Lewis Hamilton Wins his 7th Canadian Grand Prix

Britain’s Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes, strengthened his lead in Formula 1 racing this season by winning the Canadian Grand Prix, the seventh of the year, at the Gilles Villeneuve racing circuit. Although Germany’s Sebastian Vettel – who had secured the pole position driving for Ferrari on Saturday – crossed the finish line first, he was hit with a five-second penalty for making what was deemed to be a dangerous re-entry onto the track on Lap 48, with 22 laps remaining, a move that was reviewed by race authorities before the penalty was imposed.

Girish Karnad, Noted Playwright, Actor, and Filmmaker, Passes Away Aged 81

Noted actor, filmmaker, and playwright Girish Karnad passed away on June 10. The Jnanpith awardee was 81 years old. He was conferred the Padma Shri in 1974 for his contributions to theatre. In 1992, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan, in recognition of his contributions to the arts.


Indian actor and comedian Crazy Mohan passed away at 67

A well known Indian actor, comedian, screenwriter, and playwright Crazy Mohan rushed to the hospital after experiencing an acute heart attack. The actor had a massive heart attack on June 10 where he passed away at 2 p.m. Mohan Rangachari, who was born in 1952, earned the ‘Crazy’ sobriquet after penning the script for the popular play, Crazy Thieves in Palavakkam.
