India to launch the first solar mission Aditya-L1 in 2020

India is to launch Aditya-L1, its first mission to study the sun, in 2020, Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Sivan said on 13th June. “The aim of the mission is to keep a permanent eye on the sun without any disturbance. Aditya-L1 is meant to observe the solar corona,” Sivan said.
Aditya-L1 mission is expected to be inserted in a halo orbit around the Lagrangian point 1 (L1) – which is 1.5 million km from the earth – so that there is a major advantage of continuously viewing the sun without any occultation/eclipses.

 

India to launch a defense-based space research agency

With the aim of enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces to fight wars in space, the government has approved the setting up of a new agency which will develop sophisticated weapon systems and technologies for the purpose.
The Cabinet Committee on Security headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has cleared the setting up of this new agency called the Defence Space Research Agency (DSRO) which has been entrusted with the task of creating space warfare weapon systems and technologies.

 

Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy launches ‘Pink Sarathi’ vehicles

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy flagged off the ‘Pink Sarathi’ vehicles procured by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) under the ‘Nirbhaya’ scheme. The BMTC now has a fleet of 25 Pink Sarathi vehicles fitted with GPS and public announcement systems.
The corporation had received Rs. 56.07 crore from the Union government under the scheme and had taken up various measures for the safety of women passengers, including the launch of Pink Sarathi vehicles.

 

Centre reduces contribution rate for ESI

Starting July 1, both employer’s and employee’s contribution under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Act, which gives insured workers medical benefits among other facilities, would be reduced, the Centre said on 14 June.
The total contribution towards ESI was reduced from 6.5% of an employee’s wages to 4%, with the employer’s share cut to 3.25%, from 4.75%, and the employee’s contribution lowered to 0.75% of wages, from 1.75%, the government announced.

FDI flow into India rises 6% to $42 billion in 2018: UNCTAD

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India increased by 6 percent to $42 billion in 2018 with strong inflows in manufacturing, communication, financial services and cross-border merger and acquisition activities making it the sub-region’s largest recipient, according to a UN report on world investment flows.
India ranks 10th amongst the top recipients of FDI in 2018, a notch down from last year, according to the report. Global FDI flows, however, fell 13 percent in 2018 to $1.3 trillion, from $1.5 trillion in the previous year – the third consecutive annual decline, according to UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2019.

 

BSE’s India INX launches a dedicated platform for trading green bonds

BSE-owned India International Exchange said it has launched an exclusive platform for trading in green bonds. The platform — GSM (Global Securities Market) Green — has gone live on 13th June, India International Exchange (India INX) said in a statement. This is the first issuance by a private non-banking company on GSM, the exchange’s debt listing platform.
India INX’s GSM is India’s first debt listing platform that allows raising funds in any currency of choice by both foreign and Indian issuers from investors across the globe. India INX, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BSE, is India’s first International Exchange set up at Gujarat International Finance Tech-City (GIFT City).

Amitav Ghosh conferred with Jnanpith award

Renowned author Amitav Ghosh was awarded the 54th Jnanpith Award for his contribution to the enrichment of Indian literature in English at a ceremony in New Delhi on 12th June. He was conferred the award by former governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Amitav Ghosh is the first English writer to get this prestigious award.
The Jnanpith award is the highest literary award in India and can only be conferred upon an Indian citizen. Instituted in 1961, the recipients of Jnanpith award are given a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati.

 

Indian-Origin Girl Nia Tony Honored in Dubai for Paper Waste Recycling

An eight-year-old Indian-origin student Nia Tony in Dubai has collected nearly 15,000 kg of paper waste in the Gulf emirate as part of a nationwide recycling campaign, according to a media report. Nia Tony has been honored for her efforts in keeping the environment clean by collecting the paper waste.
The eco-friendly drive had three categories – corporations, academic institutions and individuals/families – and the materials that were collected included paper, plastic, glass, cans, mobiles, among other items.

 

India’s automobile major Mahindra wins Gold Award in South Africa

India’s automobile major Mahindra won the Gold Award for fairing on various indicators, including the level of satisfaction among its network of dealers and the manner of allocation of vehicles to them. The automobile giant, which has more than 60 dealers in South Africa, secured the top position out of the 29 vehicle brands surveyed for the awards.
Mahindra, which has been in South Africa for the past 16 years, received the award on June 7 from the country’s National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) which tests dealers’ satisfaction with the way a brand supports and communicates with them.

Lee, who spent a total of 348 weeks as world number one but lost six world and Olympic finals, wept as he called it quits months after suffering a cancer scare.

 

Jemimah Rodrigues to play England’s Kia Super League

World Blood Donor Day: 14 June 2019

Every year on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event, established in 2004, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.
The host country for World Blood Donor Day 2019 is Rwanda. The theme for World Blood Donor Day 2019 is “Safe blood for all”.

 

PM Modi arrives in Bishkek for the SCO summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived Bishkek in the Kyrgyz capital for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit to be held from June 13-14, 2019, the first multilateral engagement posts his re-election.
On the sidelines of the SCO Summit, he also plans to meet several leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

 

Forbes’ 12th Annual Global 2000: The World’s Biggest Public Companies

As many as 57 Indian companies figure in Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s 2000 largest public companies, with HDFC Ltd being named among the top ten consumer finance firms. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) topped the list for the seventh year in a row. Reliance Industries was the top-ranked Indian company (ranked 71st globally).
From India, Reliance Industries is the only one in the overall top-200 list. The company is followed by HDFC Bank at 209th, ONGC at 220th, Indian Oil at 288th and HDFC Ltd at 332nd place.

 

‘Gandhi cycle rally for peace’ organized in Riyadh

The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia organized a “Gandhi cycle rally for peace” in Riyadh to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. More than 150 persons of different nationalities, gender, and age, including many Saudi nationals participated in the cycle rally organized in association with the Diplomatic Quarter Authority and Saudi Cycling Federation. India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, flagged off the rally and later participated in the event with his wife Farha Sayeed.

 

Poet, lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passes away at 83

Poet and lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 83 years old. According to family members he was suffering from age-related issues.
A recipient of Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award he had penned songs for films like Asamsakalode, Malooty, Uncle Bun, Vasudha and others. He also penned literary works like Mazhayude Jalakam, Njan Enter Kadukalilekku, Ormayude Varthamanam, Mayatha Varakal, Nervara, and others.
