Indian Railways launched ‘Operation Thirst’ to crack down on the selling of unauthorized packaged drinking water

During the peak summer season, there is a heavy demand of drinking water as the number of travelers increases due to the closure of schools and festive/marriage season, and this provides an opportunity for selling of unauthorized packaged drinking water on Railway premises. Taking cognizance of it and to curb the menace, an all India two-day drive, “Operation Thirst”, was launched on July 8, 9, 2019, on the direction of DG/RPF, Railway Board, New Delhi.
During the drive, 1371 persons were arrested for selling of packaged drinking water of unauthorized brands, seizing as many as 69294 bottles. The total fine amount of Rs 6,80,855 has been realized by these offenders.

 

Centre approved Bharatmala Projects along with Indo-Nepal Border areas

Government of India has approved Phase-I of Bharatmala Pariyojana with a financial outlay of Rs 5,35,000 crore to develop 24,800 km Highways along with 10,000 km residual NHDP stretches over a period of five years. In Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I, development of Border & International Connectivity roads for a length of 2000 km has also been envisaged with an outlay of Rs 25,000 crore. Along Indo-Nepal Border, the project i.e. balance work of Piprakothi-Motihari-Raxaul on NH-28A of about 69 km length and civil cost of approximately Rs 334 crore has been awarded in December 2018 and commenced in February 2019 with a scheduled completion period of 12 months. This information was given by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin J Gadkari in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.

 

PAN not linked to Aadhaar card will become invalid from September

The government will invalidate all PAN cards that are not linked to Aadhaar by September 1. At the moment 180 out of the existing 400 million PAN cards are not linked to Aadhaar. To validate and continue using the existing PAN cards, citizens will have to link them to Aadhaar. Or else, they will be permitted to use Aadhaar instead for filing returns and while making other high-value transactions, specified under the Income Tax Act. Those who cite an Aadhaar number, which is not already linked to a PAN number, for tax returns and other specified transactions after September 1, will get a fresh one from the Income Tax Department.

Govt task force to draw up $110-bn mobile export business blueprint

To figure out how to create a $110-billion mobile phone export business from India, the government has decided to set up a secretary-level task force at the Centre to be steered by NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant. The push to set up the task force has come from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Principal Secretary in the PMO, Nripendra Misra, has written to Kant to include the finance, commerce and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology secretaries in a team to form a policy that could overcome India’s disability vis-à-vis other Asian countries as a mobile manufacturing hub.

 

RBI panel suggests an extension of forex market trading hours

RBI working group has suggested the calibrated extension of forex market trading hours from 9 am to 9 pm as it would help in gauging demand and potential benefits. The Foreign Exchange Dealers’ Association of India has stipulated market timings for inter-bank USD/INR forex transactions from 9 am to 5 pm. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in August 2018, had decided to set up an internal group to comprehensively review the timings of various markets it regulates and the associated payment and settlement infrastructure. The RBI regulates money markets, Government Securities (G-Sec) market, foreign exchange (Forex) market, and the markets for derivatives on the interest rate, currency and credit derivatives.

 

UBS forecasts India GDP growth down to 6.7%, rules out revival this year

Swiss brokerage UBS has lowered the country’s real GDP growth forecast to 6.7 percent from 6.9 percent earlier in FY20 citing the continuing slowdown in consumption demand and warned that a revival is unlikely before FY21. The brokerage expects the Reserve Bank to ease the policy rate by another 75 basis points as against its previous forecast 25 basis points in FY20.

 

Exim Bank inks USD 124 mn loan pact for infra, health projects in Papua New Guinea, Senegal

Exim Bank has signed agreements with Papua New Guinea and Senegal governments for providing USD 124 million (over Rs 850 crore) loans to finance infrastructure and health care projects in these countries. The Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has entered into an agreement with Papua New Guinea for Government of India supported the line of credit of USD 100 million for financing infrastructure projects in the country.
Of the total soft loan for Papua New Guinea, USD 60 million is to go for Bayer-Madang road project and USD 40 million for Hoskins-Kimbe road project.
Besides, an agreement was signed with Senegal for USD 24.5 million lines of credit for financing upgradation and rehabilitation of the health care system in the country.

Taylor Swift tops again on Forbes’ Highest-Paid Celebrities list, Akshay Kumar ranked 33rd

Singer Taylor Swift has topped the Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list and emerged as the highest-paid celebrity with her 2019 estimated earnings to be over USD 185 million. Kylie Jenner leading the list at No. 2 with estimated earnings of USD 170 million and Kanye West who stood at No.3 with earning over USD 150 million.
Actor Akshay Kumar is the only face from India to make it to Forbes’ annual Highest-Paid Celebrities list. Akshay landed on the 33rd spot with the earnings of $65 million in the last year.

 

Delhi girl Isha selected for an internship at the International Court of Justice

Delhi girl Isha Kanth has made India proud after being selected for a prestigious internship with the International Court of Justice. The 20-year-old, who did her higher secondary in humanities from Sanskriti School, Delhi, is pursuing her graduation in law at Queen Mary University, London. The ICJ internship is offered to just two candidates from across the world.

 

World Population Day: July 11

World Population Day is observed on July 11 every year. The day is aimed to shift the focus towards the urgency and the significance of issues related to population. It may be noted that World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. World Population Day, which is being celebrated for over three decades, is meant to raise awareness about solutions related to the issues of the growing population.

 

World’s Largest Movable Metal Dome Unveiled in Ukraine

The world’s largest movable metal structure has been unveiled as the covering for the destroyed reactor at Ukraine’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Big enough to cover Notre Dame Cathedral, the New Safe Confinement is worth $1.7 billion, is 354 feet high, weighs 39,600 tons and is able to withstand a tornado.
The project was partly funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with plans starting back in 1998 and the contract for the structure being put in place in 2007.

 

The 2nd edition of India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue 2019 held in New Delhi

India and Russia discussed ways to deepen economic cooperation in areas such as agriculture and agro-processing, the small & medium industry, the digital economy and trade, banking & finance at the second India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue in New Delhi on June 10.
Chaired by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar and Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development Timur Maksimov, the two sides examined the possibility of enhanced partnerships in six areas which also included tourism & connectivity and development of transport infrastructure.

Mandla Maseko, first black African in space passed away

A South African man who won the chance to be the first black African in space has died in a motorbike crash before turning his dream into reality. Mandla Maseko, a part-time DJ, and candidate officer with the South African air force, was nicknamed “Afronaut” after landing a coveted seat to fly 103km (64 miles) into space in 2013 in a competition organized by a US-based space academy.

 

Brazilian bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto passes away

Joao Gilberto, a Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter considered one of the fathers of the bossa nova genre that gained global popularity in the 1960s and became an iconic sound of the South American nation, died on Saturday, his son said. He was 88. A fusion of samba and jazz, bossa nova emerged in the late 1950s and gained a worldwide following in the 1960s, pioneered by Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, who composed the iconic “The Girl From Ipanema” that was performed by Gilberto and others. His wife Astrud Gilberto made her vocal debut in the song.
