Teachers’ Day 2019: 05 September

India celebrated Teachers’ Day every year on 5th September to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. On the occasion, President Ramnath Kovind will felicitate the winners of National Teachers’ Awards 2018 at a function. The winners, a total of 46 teachers, have been chosen from across the country to be felicitated in the national capital. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), has already released the list of teachers.
Radhakrishnan, who served as the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and second President of India (1962–1967), was born on September 5, 1888. He was a staunch believer in education.

 

Food ministry to ban single-use plastic bottles from Sep 15

Food and Consumer Affairs Ministry has decided to ban single-use plastic bottle in its various departments as well as the public sector units under its administration from September 15. The decision was taken at a meeting held by Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.

 

First National Conference on Cyber Crime Investigation and Cyber Forensics

Central Bureau of Investigation’s 1st National Conference on Cyber Crime Investigation and Cyber Forensics inaugurated in New Delhi. The conference was held to provide a platform for State Police and Enforcement agencies to share their best practices on cybercrime and to replicate them. CBI has also decided to set up a Centralised Technology Vertical (CTV) at a cost of Rs 99 crore by 2020 to help in getting real-time information. CBI Director R K Shukla said the conference was a platform where state police and enforcement agencies can share their best practices.

 

Rs 125 crore allotted to IIT-Kharagpur for Centre’s SATHI initiative

IIT Kharagpur has been selected for setting up a Sophisticated Analytical and Technical Help Institute (SATHI), a Department of Science and Technology initiative of the Centre, for which Rs 125 crore has been earmarked over a period of three years. The primary objective of the state-of-the-art, professionally managed science and technology infrastructure facility, will be to extend help to the academic institutes in the neighbouring regions.

 

Uttar Pradesh Launches “C-Plan” App To Aid Community Policing

The Uttar Pradesh Police has launched a “C-Plan” smartphone application that will help them keep a tab on anti-social elements to counter their nefarious designs in time. The app, launched at the new police headquarters in Lucknow, will not only help police be informed of the simmering communal tensions or other disputes taking place even in far-flung villages by common people, but will also help them verify the received information.
The department has identified 10 people in every village, known as Sambhrant-10, across the state who will inform about anti-social elements, simmering communal tensions or land disputes taking place in their respective villages through the app.

Standard Chartered Bank launches DigiSmart card

Standard Chartered Bank has launched a DigiSmart credit card that is focussed on millennials. The card is available for a monthly fee of Rs. 49, which will, however, be waived off if the customer spends more than Rs. 5,000 in the previous month.

 

ECL Finance Ltd teams up with SBI for co-origination of loans to MSMEs

ECL Finance, a subsidiary of Edelweiss Financial Services, State Bank of India (SBI) have signed a co-origination agreement to increase access to credit for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This is the third co-origination MoU in quick succession for Edelweiss after the Bank of Baroda and Central Bank of India. The partnership between SBI and Edelweiss comes close on the heels of SBI setting up a special NBFC Alliance department to step up lending to the priority sector.

 

Banks start approving retail loan proposals on ‘PSB Loans in 59 Minutes’ portal

Public sector banks (PSBs) have started giving in-principle approval of home and personal loan applications on the ‘PSB Loans in 59 Minutes’ web portal, launched last year to facilitate quick loans for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The applicants can now get in-principle approvals from 19 PSBs, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India.

In its first memorandum of understanding with an American state, Gujarat signed the Sister State MoU with Delaware in Gandhinagar. Muhammad Yunus honoured with the ‘Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis’

The Vatican has honoured Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus with the ‘Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis’ award at the Basilica of St. Francis, in Assisi, Italy. The award is given to honour those who work towards promoting peace and harmony. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance in 2006.

India-Russia Annual Summit kicks off in Vladivostok, Several agreements inked

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held delegation-level talks in Vladivostok today. The two leaders had a discussion on expanding the spectrum of bilateral ties, bolstering cooperation in trade and investment, oil and gas, mining, nuclear energy, defence and security sectors.
The two countries also signed 15 agreements in various fields. India and Russia decided to step up industrial cooperation and create new technologies and investment partnership, especially in advanced high-tech areas, with an aim to increase bilateral trade to $30 billion by 2025.

 

International Day of Charity: 5 September

India among top 10 nations in gold reserves

India pipped the Netherlands to move into the list of top ten countries in terms of total gold reserves. According to the World Gold Council, India has gold reserves totaling 618.2 tonnes, which is marginally higher than the Netherlands’ reserves of 612.5 tonnes. Interestingly, in terms of individual countries, India actually ranks ninth since the International Monetary Fund (IMF) occupies the third position after the U.S. and Germany. The U.S. leads the country list with total gold reserves of 8,133.5 tonnes followed by Germany with 3,366.8 tonnes.
