HRD Ministry awards IoE status to 5 public institutes

The Human Resource Development Ministry awarded the status of Institute of Eminence to the IIT-Madras(Tamil Nadu), the IIT-Kharagpur(West Bengal), Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University(Uttar Pradesh) and the University of Hyderabad(Telangana). Each university will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry, laying out its plan to achieve the objective of becoming a world-class institution. The public institutions on the list will then be eligible for a government grant of Rs. 1,000 crore.

 

UNESCO, Rajasthan govt join hands to promote state’s intangible cultural heritage

UNESCO and the Rajasthan government joined hands to promote music, art and craft forms, and other intangible cultural heritage of the state to spur socio-economic growth of several artist communities. The project, which will run for around three-and-a-half years, will be implemented in Jodhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer and Bikaner districts.
The project will focus on cultural heritage and traditions, such as pottery, weaving and other crafts, as well as music traditions, in order to create community-led and community-benefiting tourism opportunities.

 

Ladakh’s first-ever Mobile Science Exhibition of NCSM in Leh flagged off by Prahlad Singh

The first-ever Mobile Science Exhibition (SCIENCE EXPLORER) was flagged off in Leh, Ladakh by Union culture and tourism minister (Independent charge) Shri Prahlad Singh Patel and would be available as first of its kind in the entire Ladakh region. He also launched 25 new Mobile Science Exhibition(MSE) buses for Aspirational Districts across the country in order to reach the unserved/unreached areas and it is fully funded by the culture ministry.

 

Kochi to host India International Seafood Show after 12 years

The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) is organizing the 22nd edition of India International Seafood Show (IISS) at Hotel Grand Hyatt, Kochi from February 7 to 9 next year.
This biennial show, re-visiting Kochi after a span of 12 years, will provide an ideal platform for interaction between Indian Exporters and overseas importers of Indian marine products.

 

Govt launches updated Credit linked Capital Subsidy Scheme for MSMEs

The government launched the updated Credit linked Capital Subsidy Scheme (CLCSS) to allow micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) access to capital. MSME Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the government would prepare a final report on the recommendations of the U K Sinha committee, which had been set up by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to suggest expeditious ways to strengthen MSMEs, within the next eight days.
The CLCSS scheme would be crucial in raising MSME contribution to the gross domestic product from the current 29 percent to 50 percent, in addition to increasing exports from the sector to 50 percent from 40 percent now.
The scheme provides an upfront subsidy of 15 percent on institutional credit up to Rs 1 crore for MSMEs in the specified 51 sub-sectors.
In February, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved an outlay of Rs 2,900 crore for the scheme. Now, it is a demand-driven one without any upper limit on overall annual spending on the subsidy disbursal.

MCX, Zhengzhou Exchange sign MoU for exchange of information

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) and Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE), one of the leading commodity exchanges in China, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for co-operation and the exchange of information.
MCX offers commodity futures contracts in bullion, base metals, energy and agricultural commodities, whereas commodity futures with both Agricultural and non-agricultural products like Cotton, Rapeseed Oil, Seed & Meal, Sugar, Flat Glass, Methanol, Pure Teraphthelic Acid (PTA) and Thermal Coal as underlying are traded on ZCE. Besides ZCE offers option products on White Sugar and Cotton. Whilst, options on Gold, Silver, Crude Oil, Copper and Zinc futures are traded on MCX.

Anupama Swain wins bronze in World Martial Arts Mastership

Anupama Swain bagged a bronze medal at the World Martial Art Masters Ju Jitsu Championships at Chungju in Korea. Swain competed in the 63 kg segment. Jiu-Jitsu is a form of martial art and combat sport and it puts the entire focus on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting. With this win, she has won a direct entry into the 2022 Asian Games.

WHO South-East Asia Region plans to banish measles, rubella by 2023

Member-countries of the World Health Organisation (WHO) South-East Asia Region have resolved to eliminate highly infectious childhood killer diseases measles and rubella by 2023. A resolution to eliminate the diseases was adopted at the 72nd session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia in Delhi.

28th cycle of Indo-Thai CORPAT Begins in Bangkok

The latest iteration of the India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol (Indo-Thai CORPAT) between the navies of the two countries, which seek to enhance bilateral ties and maritime cooperation, is being hosted from September 5 to 15 in Bangkok, Thailand. Indian Naval Ship Kesari and His Majesty’s Thailand Ship (HTMS) Kraburi along with Maritime Patrol Aircraft from both the navies are participating in the 28th edition of the CORPAT.

Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe Passes Away at 95

Zimbabwe’s revolutionary leader and long-time dictator Robert Gabriel Mugabe Passed away in Singapore due to health issues. He was 95. He had served as Prime Minister of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987 and then as President from 1987 to 2017. Mugabe was the world’s oldest ruler when he resigned as Zimbabwe’s president in November of 2017.

 

Author and Playwright Kiran Nagarkar Passes Away at 77 in Mumbai

Renowned novelist and playwright Kiran Nagarkar died in Mumbai on 5th September after a brief illness. He was 77. Nagarkar, who was born in Mumbai in 1942, published his first novel, ‘Saat Sakkam Trechalis’, in Marathi in 1974. Then followed “Cuckold” (1997) which won him the 2001 Sahitya Akademi award and catapulted him among the most respected modern post-independence Indian writers in English. Nagarkar worked as an academic, journalist, screenplay writer, and in the advertising industry.
