Govt reconstitutes EAC-PM till 2021, Bibek Debroy retained as chairman

The government reconstituted the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister for a period of another two years. Sajjid Chenoy, India economist at JP Morgan is the new part-time member. Part-time member Ashima Goyal of Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research and full-time members Bibek Debroy of Niti Aayog and Ratan Watal will continue to be part of the EAC-PM. Debroy retains his role as chairman of the EAC-PM while former Finance Secretary Watal will continue being the member-secretary.


‘Reset: Regaining India’s Economic Legacy’ authored by Subramanian Swamy launched

Former president Pranab Mukherjee released a book named ‘Reset: Regaining India’s Economic Legacy’ written by MP Subramanian Swamy that tracks the country’s economic development over the years and offers solutions for future growth.


‘Professor Ayushman’ comic book released by Ayush Ministry in New Delhi

A comic book series with ‘Professor Ayushman’ as the central character has been unveiled by the AYUSH Ministry to make children aware of the importance of medicinal plants and their use for home remedies. The comic book, conceived by the National Medicinal Plants Board, talks about plants like Aloe Vera, Tulsi, Amla, Giloy, Neem, Ashvagandha, and Brahmi.

HDFC Bank is the most valued brand in India, LIC takes the second spot

HDFC Bank beat the crowds to top the list of 75 most valued brands in India, keeping its position intact from the previous year. Public sector insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) retained their second and third ranks in the list of most valued Indian brands.
The big change, however, has been in the overall growth of brand values in the BrandZ 2019 Most Valuable Indian Brands, a report by WPP and Kantar Millward Brown. The total value of the top 75 brands increased to $228.2 billion, growing at a moderate 6 percent over 2018, far slower than 34 percent recorded the previous year.


PNB launches Preventive Vigilance portal

Punjab National Bank launched a Preventive Vigilance portal to facilitate its staff members to check procedural lapses and promote good practices. The PV portal will facilitate all staff members to contribute towards arresting procedural lapses and unhealthy practices and will usher in a coherent climate conducive to banking for the modern age. The portal was launched by Central Vigilance Commissioner Sharad Kumar at PNB Corporate Office on September 25, 2019, to promote vigilance awareness.

Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat to take over as chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee

Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will take over as the chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee (CCS). Gen. Bipin Rawat will receive the baton of Chairman of Chiefs of Staff Committee from outgoing IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa who retires by the end of the month.
The Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) comprises chiefs of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and the senior most member is appointed its chairperson. The Chairman of COSC is tasked with ensuring synergy among the three services and evolve a common strategy to deal with external security challenges facing the country.


Adille Sumariwalla re-elected as IAAF Council member

The President of Athletics Federation of India, Adille Sumariwalla was re-elected as member of the Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for a second four-year term. The election took place during the 52nd Congress of the sport’s world governing body at Doha. The former Olympian Sumariwalla received 121 votes to get elected as one of the 13 individual members of the IAAF Council. The elective Congress was held just two days before the World Athletics Championships opens in Doha on 27th September.

World Maritime Day 2019: 26th September(Last Thursday-September)

Every year the World Maritime Day is observed on the last Thursday of September to celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in shipping. In 2019, World Maritime Day is being observed on September 26.
The World Maritime Day theme for the year is “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, and to highlight the important – yet under-utilized – contribution of women within the maritime sector.


International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons: 26th September

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed every year on September 26 since 2014 to raise public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination. All around the world, ICAN(International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) campaigners will be marking the occasion with activities calling for the end of these inhumane immoral weapons and promoting the UN Treaty that will end them.


India ranked 44th rank in world digital competitiveness rankings; US tops

India has advanced four places to 44th position in terms of digital competitiveness in the world as the country has made improvements in terms of knowledge and future readiness to adopt and explore digital technologies, according to a global report. The US was ranked as the world’s most digitally competitive economy, followed by Singapore in second place. Sweden was ranked third on the list, followed by Denmark and Switzerland in the 4th and 5th place, respectively.


PM Modi hosts Caribbean leaders, announces $14-million grant to CARICOM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the leaders of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) during the first-ever India-Caricom leaders’ summit in New York, with a focus on fighting climate change and increasing India’s participation with the grouping. Modi announced a $14-million grant for community development projects in the CARICOM and another $150 million line of credit for solar, renewable energy and climate-change-related projects. The CARICOM grouping has 15 members-states and five associate members.
